David Foster: "The whole country fell in love with our next guest." "Watch this!"
And that's how David Foster introduced Katharine McPhee at the JCPenney Jam one year ago at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
What do you all remember of that night, when Katharine sang "Over The Rainbow" & "Sovios Nomos", with Andrea Bocelli?
I can remember when David Foster introduced her, the lights went out, and Katharine in an evening gown, began with "When all the clouds, darken up the skyway, etc." She was fabulous.
That's all I can say.
I am sorry I never got the chance to see Katharine on the "American Idol tour" last year.
Very true. The question is....would she have been ready for the Idol tour if she's skipped the Bocelli concerts, JC Jam and a few other things after the post-Idol TV/radio tour or was just bound to crash regardless? I guess we'll never know but I do agree that missing those three weeks of the Idol tour were damaging to Katharine's image. And it's crazy because she was sick and she had to nurse her voice back to good enough shape to handle singing every night....but all the negativity that surrounded this I think created some problems for her that still exist.
Those three weeks she missed seemed like three months because every show she missed turned into a new set of people taking shots at her. And then she gets spotted with Nick...she does a photoshoot...and I realize she was just on voice rest after the first few days and she could do all of this stuff but nobody wanted to hear that. If she wasn't on the Idol tour, she shouldn't have been anywhere. At least that's what some wanted to tell you.
I liked the Somios Novios performance better than Rainbow here, but she looked fabulous, and the audience reaction to OTR was great.
Kat's association with David Foster and Andrea Bocelli probably contributes nearly as much to the confusion about her artistic persona as her performances on Idol. If she hadn't worked Bocelli's California concerts, this event, and a track on his album, then maybe it wouldn't have been so surprising that Kat made a rhythmic pop record. I think David Foster wants to fight typecasting about his production abilities, too. As a judge on Celebrity Duets last summer, McPhoster received ribbing from a rocker-wannabe celebrity about producing Whitney, Celine, & company, so he told that guy he could help him rock out in the studio. Foster also mentioned the artists he's worked with (like Randy Jackson does, but much more often), including several non-diva singers.
I doubt Kat would've avoided her vocal problems by skipping the JC Penney Jam. She was already sounding very rough on those post-finale TV performances. I never listen to her Today Show or Early Show performances of Rainbow, because she could barely get it out of her voice.
The girl's a natural mimic. Remember her doing a Nelly Furtado takeoff in that one interview? She sounded just like her. And she has perfect pitch, so I guess you'd have to say she just has a great ear, period. Some people are born with it, some aren't.
The only language I've ever been fluent in, aside from English, is German, and they used to tell me that although I didn't exactly sound like a native speaker, they couldn't tell what I was, because I didn't have any kind of recognizable accent. I guess I've always been a bit of a mystery.
