Yeah, I've seen it before at least once and that song is so annoying. Pretty good audio/video quality for YouTube though. Kat really had some meat on her bones then.

Thx for posting. If anyone wants this thing I could rip it?  Just give the word.

Yes, that was posted here way back in May I believe. Several vids popped up from Kat's pre-Idol time...and all of them show her being involved in some near avant-garde theatre projects. At least in this one, she wasn't playing a beached whale as she did in one other vid that turned up (a bit controversially) last May.

That song the girls sing in this is from the Stephen Sondheim musical 'Company.' As annoying as that song may be to some ears, the musical itself is highly influential. Mainly, that's for the structure of the story, which was innovative at the time (around the early 70's originally). But you wouldn't expect anything less from Sondheim.  His music was just as complex--and sometimes involved tongue-twisting lyrics and high notes that are taxing on the voice.

You can tell the other students in the audience really raise the roof off the place after the girls finish. That's because they know how hard that number is to perform at a consistently high level without messing up the fast-flying lyrics. It's a real record of mastering the most challenging type of musical theatre...and it's not hard to see that Kat's stage presence outshined the other girls.

By the way, some people thought the girl in the chair was Kat--but she's to the left of that girl. They both look quite similar with the blonde hair.

Somehow I think Kat would prefer performing in something like 'Wicked' on Broadway rather than one where she once had to be tested by teachers. And, besides, we'd rather see Kat in a musical on Broadway where she could keep her dark hair.

Okay, I got the rip of the video of Katharine at the Boston Conservatory singing "You Could Drive A Person Crazy" with two other gals (who shall remain nameless)  It is a flv (Flash) file 6MB in size:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/7fsnj3

Oh for those who are interested, here are the lyrics for the song(feel free to sing along, );

You Could Drive A Person Crazy lyrics by Stephen Sondheim from Company(1970)

APRIL, KATHY, MARTA:
Doo-doo-doo-doo!
Doo-doo-doo-doo!
Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo!

You could drive a person crazy,
You could drive a person mad.
First you make a person hazy
So a person could be had,
Then you leave a person dangling sadly
Outside your door,
Which could only make a person gladly
Want you even more.
I could understand a person
If it's not a person's bag.
I could understand a person
If a person was a fag.
But worse 'n that,
A person that
Titillates a person and then leaves her flat
Is crazy,
He's a troubled person,
He's a truly crazy person himself.

KATHY:
When a person's personality is personable,
He should not sit like a lump.
It's harder than a matador coercin' a bull
To try to get you off of your rump.
So single and attentive and attractive a man
Is everything a person could wish,
But turning off a person is the act of a man
Who likes to pull the hooks out of fish.

APRIL, KATHY, MARTA:
Knock-knock! Is anybody there?
Knock-knock! It really isn't fair.
Knock-knock! I'm workin' all my charms.
Knock-knock! A zombie's in my arms.
All that sweet affection!
What is wrong?
Where's the loose connection?
How long, O Lord, how long?
Bobby-baby-Bobby-bubbi-Bobby,

You could drive a person buggy,
You could blow a person's cool.
Like you make a person feel all huggy
While you make her feel a fool.
When a person says that you upset her,
That's when you're good.
You impersonate a person better
Than a zombie should.
I could understand a person
If he wasn't good in bed.
I could understand a person
If he actually was dead.
Exclusive you!
Elusive you!
Will any person ever get the juice of you?
You're crazy,
You're a lovely person,
You're a moving,
Deeply malajusted,
Never to be trusted,
Crazy person yourself.
Bobby is my hobby and I'm givin' it up!

From the Amazon description of Company (Original Broadway Cast) Album:

Product Description: Stephen Sondheim's Company still sounds as modern as it did when it opened in 1970. Donna McKechnie, Susan Browning, and Pamela Myers spoof the Andrews Sisters with gusto in the tongue-twisting "You Could Drive a Person Crazy"

So there you are link, lyrics and background.  Enjoy.

Yes, I could see why Kat had such stage presence throughout the competition, the Bocelli concerts and today's idol tour. I also like Kat without much make-up, not a la Sexy Hair photo. Doesn't Kat remind you of beautiful Jaclyn Smith, one of tv Charlies Angels?

We are definitely working together -- working on a record together. She sings so magnificently, it's just amazing -David Foster-

Her theatre training has definitely helped her on the show I think.  It gave her really unique ideas like the dance moves for BHACT and things like that.  Her stage prescence was always evident, and this is probably a highlight of her career at the Conservatory, since they are so selective, usually seniors have the most solo opportunities, but something like this is equally as challenging, as Gregoricant pointed out.

Alright, I'm like more than embarassed.  I just saw the hair colors and assumed totally and entirely wrong.  Which left me confused because I didn't even look at the girl on the left...other than noticing she was taller than the others (which made me think...wow she must be 9 feet tall if this other girl is Katharine).

But I was confused because the dark-haired one didn't really look like Katharine.  Although one of the posts said she had some meat on her...so I thought..."Hmm, OK wow I guess so..."

Oh my, I feel stupid.  OK...yeah, I think Katharine should stay away from the blondish tinted hair.  If you are out there Katharine...please, please, please do not dye your hair blonde or anything resembling blonde.  I'm growing to like the black quite a bit...I'm actually torn whether I like the Idol brunette or the current black better.  I think I'm leaning toward the Idol colored hair but I enjoy the current as well.

I'm going to crawl into a hole now.  Oh my...I can't tell you how stupid that made me feel when I read...some people mistake her for the girl in the chair, she's the one on the left.  Oh, I mistook her for the one on the right somehow.  I'm going to hide now.

"I saw Katharine McPhee when there were about 12 contestants left on American Idol. She blew me away. I loved her grace, her style, her poise, her voice and her hair! I wanted her to be the face of Sexy Hair because she represented everything that I had in my head for the brand: youth, beauty, talent, class, a young sophistication, and sexiness." -- Jim Morrison, CEO of Sexy Hair Products.

You could drive a person crazy doing that. You could drive a person mad.

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist doing that.

I had to initially watch the video a couple of times months ago to realize it was Kat on the left. She and the other girl look a little alike--though those reports of her weight in this are greatly exaggerated...despite the later reports of her bulimia. Her weight here was just about the same as we saw during her 'AI' auditions. But remember that the Boston pizza houses were frequented by her and her fellow students often. It's nothing unusual to eat a little more when you're in college to keep up with the stress. That even happened to me when in college.

It'd be interesting to find out what kind of grade Kat got on this performance. I assume this was part of their final where they had to show what they learned on the stage. From all indications, she blew everybody away. The student body all give them a standing O--even though the teachers were probably similar to the 'AI' judges.

Performing Sondheim is like performing Shakespeare's 'King Lear' in an acting school. It shows how rigourous her musical theatre training was. I think Kat learned far more than we realize there--even though she didn't get a degree.

Yeah, she doesn't look much different from how she did in her audition for Idol.  Well, other than the hair color.  That's what threw me.  Because of the comment about her weight...I thought, "OK...let's see" and then I mistook her for the girl on the right and thought, "Wow, that doesn't even look like Katharine."  Ha, there was a good reason for that...because it wasn't her!  Blah!

I've seen the "Beached Whale" thing before...interesting to say the least.  Especially her playful comment about spending $5,000 on "these".  Some people thought she was serious...I think that if you've paid attention closely enough (raising hand) it is pretty obvious that she hasn't paid any money for "those".  They appear to um, behave very naturally from my repeated viewings of everything I've seen.

Kat's the one who ends up in the chair at the end and starts on the left, if there is still any confusion over it. Clearly the gal who plays the "Cathy", see above lyrics, and has the solo part is supposed to be the star and is outshone by Kat.

lol!!!

That's an awful song!
I'm still with the freaken melody in my head!
That song can drive a person crazy!

It isn't confusing if you really look at the three girls in the video.  The one that starts on the left is obviously Katharine if know to look for someone with blondish-brown hair.  I wasn't looking for that.

And I had that freakin' song stuck in my head all day.  That would have been OK if you could actually hear Katharine's voice during that video...but unfortunately you can't.  The "lead" overpowers everyone sadly.

I'd like to comment on this video from the Boston Conservatory. Katharine was probably 18 years old here, and a little packed in. Her hair had highlights, not a total blondie look (as if, to me). The 3 girls were probably all freshmen. It's hard to detect more visuals for delineations as to where Kat was at the outset because their dresses were black. You could not particularly point out Kat's vocals because there were 3 "cultured voices" blending all the time, which to me is excellent blending and timing. Stage wise, Katharine commanded it. I have this feeling that Katharine was the more talented among the 3 and the other 2 knew it. Why? Although Kat started singing not in the center, she centered herself with the body-spread-over-the chair at the end of the number. The one that does that usually is the DIVA, right? The audience's approval was astounding. Tremendous performance! I enjoyed this video. Thanks for reposting.

Movie actors like Paul Newman, Jimmy Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall and Bette Davis make me want to live in the era they lived but I could have been just as inspired even now while I watch their work in films.

Is anybody else is having computer problems with the site tonight/today....maybe it is just me. Because it seems to stall on something about the "Google Ad"....anyway, on to my reply.

I probably need to rewatch this when I have a second because the first time I was trying to find Katharine and was unsuccessful because I was trying to convince myself the girl on the right was her even though it clearly isn't.

Then the second time...I figured out she's on the left and I'm captivated by that hair. So...I totally lost the performance...I always do this. I'm still appreciating new things from her Idol stuff and I've watched all of those 1,000 times by now. Anyway...

This site was acting really weird for me last night too. I was locked out of a lot of places, stuck here and there, having things pop in I hadn't selected, etc.

sj: I think if you look at the whole family, it's obvious that Katharine's assets are genetic, not surgical. And that's all I'm going to say about that subject.

katpedia.com - watch and listen to Idol, pre-Idol, and post-Idol McPhee performances all in one convenient location

I think I may have fixed FireFox.  IE has been giving me problems on here.  I think it was because I had the "show replies" on and some of these threads that have tons of pictures really cause it to slow down.  Anyway, hopefully I've solved that problem.  Then the Netscape browser causes triple posts for some reason....

Groucho....I know.  I realize they are genetic.  I'm surprised it took that long to get a response about my comments on "those".  I wanted to add that it is pretty obvious that she was kidding in that "Beached Whale" clip because if you have been paying attention (and I know we all have been)...Katharine has lost a teensie, tiny bit of "those" since the audition.  Which would only happen naturally when you lose some weight.

Not that I ever thought that our dear Katharine wasn't 100 percent natural...it was just that clip...I'm not even sure what she's acting out there...that was one of the most random videos I think I've seen.
