Pleeeeze Spree, that's a very serious charge and something tells me you do not know this for a fact.  Mariah Carey is a GREAT singer.  Nobody has her range and she deserves every award she gets.  This payola garbage has to stop.  It shouldn't be mentioned on KMF.  It is a federal offense and nothing to joke about.


I will concede that RCA is not using payola since it is merely specualtion on our part.  However I would like an explanation as to why "Over It" is blowing up on the east coast, and yet it hasn't even been played on KIIS in LA.

Katharine reaches many more people and transcends any one dempographic.  Although it would be great, I don't think we should focus on a platinum record.  Few artists gain platinum for their debut album, it is very difficult to attain.  Grammies are also elusive, so we should plan on giving Katharine our sustained unconditional support no matter how many sales are made and whether or not she gets overlooked for a Grammy.  This is only her first record, there will be countless others and she will achieve greatness as long as she has our support.

oh come on, it's as plain as day to me.  Everyone knows she's guilty of it.  How else do you think she had all those #1's in the late 90's?  Hmmm...let's see.  Even though I don't hear her song on the radio at all, i can still buy the single in the store for .99  or even .49

Discounting singles (brand new singles, that is) is a sneaky way of getting your single up the charts when radio completely ignores it.  She's done this plenty of times.  It's a joke really.  I'm betting most those #1's you've never even heard of cuz they were never played.  Now i may not know the "facts", but it's common knowledge in the music industry that something "fishy" was going on.

yes, Mariah is a GREAT singer and her last album had some fantastic songs on it, but her string of #1's in the late 1990's is undeserved.

There's no place for undocumented accusations at KMF.
And also, it has little to do with the artists and more with their record companies and management. Even though direct payola is illegal, there's plenty of borderline legal ways to grease the skids so to say. Extravagent gifts, trips, parties, to name a few.

I'm not ready to concede anything yet either, but I agree that we need to maintain our backing for Kat 100% even if she doesn't do as well as we'd have liked with her debut. I'm convinced she's going to just get better and better with time and I will stick by her as long as she chooses to pursue her musical career.

alright, i'll stop, but let me just put this little question in the air...

How can you have the #1 song in the country and no one's heard it?  And not once, but numerous times? (and i'm talking pre-American Idol days--we all know you can have the #1 song now with no airplay).  And with Billboards formula of virtually 75% airplay 25% sales in the 90's, how is that possible?

don't answer it, just think about it.  I'll stop here.

The whole system based on AI, so called audience impressions, is designed to let the record company deal with a very select number of players and have huge chart bump based on that single large market radio station playing the song.

Now, we can debate what might "motivate" a huge market station to play, or not to play as in the case of KIIS, a new artists first single repeatedly. But we can't deny that Katharine's chart movement thus far is directly attributable to her repeated airplay at Z100.

Moreover, the system (corrupt or pure as snow) is clearly working to the overall benefit of the only artist that really I care about. Clearly Kat's chart position is being supported by radio play and not her total sales. I say request her song at stations that are already playing it.. And play the request countdown game at stations to the extent that you choose to, or can, a lot of stations have a list and Katharine song simply isn't on the list. And don't get upset or indignant about the fact that the system tries hard, very hard to choose the winners.

Here is an interesting bit of info that someone can explain to me:  Last week Katharine's song was most requested at one Sacramento, CA for two days straight so I signed up for the "Club" to vote and now she isn't even on the voting list.  Now explain that to me.

Which is different from the Friday one posted above  so it looks like she is on top.  Maybe, william or somebody who listened can verify this.
