Thanks to skier9785 for the information.

American Idol has come up with this on it's homepage today.

'As the judges always say, it's all about the song choice. Now the choice is yours! We're introducing the "Idol Hit List," and we need the help of your inner music critic. Select your 5 favorite songs from the top 50, listed below. Over the next week, we'll tally the votes and announce them on the show next week. Here's the best part: One of the top 50 songs will be performed by the original artist during the show! Start voting! '

This may in fact be a hoax seeing as it mentions that one of the 50 will be performing.. but, her name will be announced as one of the top 5 if we keep voting for her! Think people, 27 to 37 million people will know how good 'Over It' really is.

Looks like you HAVE TO vote for five songs, so be sure to vote for Kat and then vote for four more that you suspect no one else will like, so she has less competition.

I voted!! I voted for my five favorite songs. Katharine McPhee- Over It, Chris Daughtry- It's not Over, Chris Daughtry- Home, Fergie, and Avril-Girlfriend. When it came to the ranking, I voted for Katharine as #1. How can we spread the word around about this? I really want to see Kat perform!!!!

That's an interesting list. They've already had two of those artists on the the show this year - Gwen Stefani & Carrie Underwood. So the "One of the top 50 songs will be performed by the original artist during the show!" is already true and may not have anything to do with our votes.

Also interesting that there aren't more Idol alums on the list.

Maybe it's just a sneaky way to get Katharine on the show. I mean the previous winner usually visits, but there's no real precedent for anyone else. Clay was on last year, but as part of a funny skit, not just because he was #2 his year. This year they're bringing in all kinds of former Idols--PIckler visits, Daughtry sends off the losers, we get a brief taste of Not Ur Girl etc.

I think you're right.

Very odd poll - I suppose they want to reserve the right to reject whoever is selected, just in case some pranksters get involved.

I voted for Kat and four other groups that I'd never heard of.

I've voted and I chose Kat and others that I like but what Katatonic said is a really great idea. Vote four more other than Kat that no one else will like so Kat has less competition..

Ok, I voted for Kat at #1--but why, oh living heck why, do they need your birthday and your zipcode just to vote on this? I'm already registered at the 'AI' site (over a year now), so you'd think they'd recognize you based on that. Apparently they want to see who's voting for what in various regions and what ages vote for whomever.

Also, with that list, 'AI' shows a bit of arrogance in presupposing they'll be able to get any of those artists on the show to sing the song live. There's still some artists out there who refuse to take part in the show. Though this list has all the latest young Top 40 stars who probably wouldn't hesitate to appear on the show for the sake of publicity. Only the more established stars could turn it down without worrying about it affecting their sales.

I know I shouldn't have, but I voted Nelly F.'s 'Say It Right' second...when most people are probably tired of hearing that song by now. If nothing else, Kat could fill in for Nelly if NF got the flu or something. Then we'd get to hear Kat's own version of the song as she sang on that recent video while impersonating Nelly...
