Chris is pretty high like at 8 because he has music samples out on AOL and well his CD drops in like 2 weeks. Kat keeps breaking the Top one hundred and Taylor is flucuating around too.

I finally pre-ordered mine.. though I think the lack of album news and buzz are kinda hurting the pre-order sales right now, there's not even a decent temporary cover out for her. I mean Kat looks gorgeous and all (as always), but the cover on Amazon is so amateurishly done it's not going to help sparks interests in people who're still on the fence. Just look at Taylor's, his is temporary but at least they put more effort into it. Anyway...I really hope they'll update Kat's cover...the sooner the better.

I've gotta disagree on the "lack of buzz".  Kat's amazon ranking is based ONLY on buzz.  She still hasn't said a word about it (hopefully soon ) so the only reason she's rising up and breaking 100 is due to some arbitrary buzz.  I hope we get a single soon...

Heartless, Taylor no longer has a temporary cover up. That is his real one, and it has been up there for a while.

I agree, Liz. It's amazing that Kat can even break the top 100 with absolutely NO album news whatsoever (aside from producer hints). The buzz she creates by being secretive and getting press (Carousel Ball/Esquire) is what's determining her Amazon rank.

Call me old fashioned, but a face like that looking out at me from a CD cover would make me about four million times more likely to buy it than any of the other Idol covers. What's so in, or edgy, or attention getting about them? A guy standing there barely discernible from the dark background, somebody sitting there staring at the camera, looking like a candid from Uncle Chet's birthday party. I simply don't get what's so spectacular about that. And their new official websites look exactly the same to me. Make fun of the girl in the green dress shot or the fluffy flowers if you like, at least it was something beautiful to look at. I guess I'm just not part of the demographic they're aiming at.

I just checked and Kat is #95 on most popular sellers on Amazon, while Taylor is number 36 and Kellie is 37. I preordered and others need to also to raise her number. Taylor's album is coming out the same day and he's so far ahead of her. Come on fellow Kat fans, place your orders!

Nmore, it is not important for us to preorder. Her numbers have raised considerably, and Katharine is doing amazingly well for someone who has released ZERO information about her album sound. Both Chris and Kellie have released singles, and Kellie also has a video and an album out. Taylor has given his fans A LOT of info about his cd and does routine updates. He also has videos of him practicing on rehearsal.com. In retrospect, I'm amazed that Kat isn't so very far behind them. We should just let things come naturally...wait for the single, some news of her direction, etc...Then we can worry about Amazon rankings (which account for 5%, if that, of album sales).

Could the mods please split the album content and the chart ranking posts into separate threads? Sorry, I'm uninterested in chart position this far ahead of the actual release.

I guess I don't mind Kat's going for the $$$$ with her first album. My preferred version of her as an artist is a contemporary, female version of Frank Sinatra, but debuting with a standards album could be risky. (Besides, Sinatra didn't really become legendary until his mid/late 30s, and Kat might need maturity and experience before taking that mantle.) I'm not terribly thrilled with her choice of producers. The Ryan Leslie-produced "Me & U" by Cassie sounds and looks really skanky; please don't sing anything like this, Kat!! Back in the day, I really liked "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWebeyXUFWU"]Aaliyah's" "Are You That Somebody," which Timbaland produced (and sings in?), but a timeless classic it isn't. I have no idea who Danja is.

If Kat's CD has to have a hip-hoppy vibe, I'd hope for songs in the vein of Christina Aguilera's "What a Girl Wants," which has an upbeat, catchy melody, powerful lyrics (tho the girl power element does zippo for me ), and can easily be tweaked to fit Top 40, AC, Urban, etc. radio formats. I haven't listened to or enjoyed Top 40 radio for several years now, so I don't know if songs like that would work in 2006/2007, or if that's even hip-hop.

I have a strange feeling that we're going to be more interested in her dance moves than her singing (or lip-synching).

Oh no, don't mention that word without everybody here flinching like a vampire to garlic.

I can assure you that Kat won't be lip-synching unless it's forced on her for some kind of European TV appearance down the road. Over there, they actually WANT people to lip-synch for production purposes. Over here in America, though, artists are expected to perform live on TV (and in concerts)...even though many in the Pop world don't. Kat's all about true live performance--and I'm more than sure she'll uphold that forever.

I can see why you'd want to see Kat do a modern standards album. I sort of thought she'd go that route--and I wouldn't have minded it. It's her most comfortable niche, despite being able to do absolutely anything with aplomb. While there's a strong market for modern standards albums, I'm sort of glad that she isn't doing one now. The reason is because everybody and Rod Stewart's cousin is doing one the last few years. Kat would probably be accused of jumping on the standards bandwagon and wouldn't stand alone as much as she would with something all original. I personally wouldn't want critics calling her the "female Michael Buble." One critic already did that once a while back--and I actually cringed when I saw it. That's because it was written in a snarky way.

That 'Hip Hop' sound that's rumoured to be on her album is really being misunderstood I'm afraid. We don't really know what the true sound is going to be on the album--and I'd wager to guess the Hip Hop aspect is going to be very subtle rather than at the forefront. Moreover, I think the album will lean more toward a Soulful/R&B/Pop sound with Hip Hop beats floating around in the background. Add to that other little musical Katisms that Kat may have up her sleeve...and you have something quite different from anything else on the market. It could be a potpourri of sounds that places Kat in that important niche: An original.

I wouldn't worry about Kat being skanky either. She's not about to be pushed in that direction...at least doing it blatantly. If there's any sexiness to her vids and songs, it'll be a good balance there without offending anyone. I'd be surprised if it was anything other than that careful balance Kat masters so well in handling her career. Of course, she doesn't have to ACT sexy at all. She just is while being herself when singing a song. That says a lot when comparing to other female pop stars who try too hard to tap into the tittilation.

It may be a good idea to separate the threads for now since the pre-order rankings fluctuate widely in very little time and are virtually meaningless at this point. so far from the album's release. But, you really can't fault us for getting excited about a top 100 showing. I think the threads could be combined much closer to the release date. At least then there is an indication of where the CD will be placed in the first week.

I hope we hear something about the album this week. Of course, I'd like it to be a single but I've stopped getting my hopes up. It would be great to hear a confirmation from whoever that the Dec. 5 date is set in stone or is what they're shooting for. It would also be fine if they say it may be pushed back. I'd just rather know than be toyed with like we were when we were wondering if the Nov. 28 date had been pushed back to Dec. 5. But she has all that promotion scheduled that seems to fit with the Dec. 5 date very well, so I'm assuming they're going to make that. I'm sure it's a big rush for everyone at this point. I say this every week so maybe I'm jinxing things, lol. But things are getting close so it seems time for some news.

11/06/2006 2:46 AM Alert

The ranking stuff is just fun to look at.  I don't think anybody is taking it super seriously.  I mean hovering around 100 sounds bad compared to Chris & Taylor (Kellie doesn't count since hers is out now...but Kellie was around 300 this far away from her release).  But then you look at say Fantasia's and....the fact is most people don't worry about this stuff.  Doing all the pre-ordering.  In some sense, we've still got the competition thing going.  And you know the media will do it.  Especially with Katharine & Taylor releasing the same day.

Anybody have an thoughts on whether it'll help, hurt, do nothing that they are coming out the same day?  You think it matters?  Will someone going to buy a Katharine CD decide to pick up a Taylor one because it'll be sitting right there next to Katharine's in most stores....OR (and this is what might happen to me)....you are going to walk into the store and see the two of them sitting there.  And you'll get the strange impulse to buy an extra copy or two to make the stack of CD's lessen a bit next to Taylor's.  In that sense...maybe it's a good thing.  It might make the Taylor fans & us do some silly things when we see the two of them sitting in the store next to each other.  Just a thought.

As for the direction of Katharine's album.  It isn't going to be heavily hip-hop.  There's just going to be some "hip-hop" beats in some of the songs.  She's still going to sing.  You'll still know it's her.  I think people are getting confused by this.  Not sure if all of you are familar with Beyonce but...that's what I'm thinking Katharine's "sound" is going to be like.  Something in that element.  It's more R&B/Soul/Pop like I think Greg said.  "Hip-hop" makes it sound like Katharine's going to be rapping or something.

Basically it comes down to this.  Do you trust Katharine or not?  Do you believe in her or not?  I both trust & believe that she knows what's best.  She COULD NOT do a standards album as her debut.  Down the road?  Sure.  But she's got to grab the market that buys tons of CD's.  And that's people between 12-34.  Once she's established herself as a big-time popular artist...then, if she wants, she could go do that jazzy album or that standards album some of you want.

But if she did a standards album out of the gates...she'd be stereotyped as "just a standards singer".  That's what a lot of people think she is anyway.  And that's why she's doing what she's doing.  She's determined to prove to everyone she can do popular music.  Does anyone remember what she said about why she chose to do BHATCT again in the finale?  Something about wanting to show everyone she can do Top 40 stuff...be on the radio...etc, etc.

And yeah, she sings the standards great.  A fresh-faced 22-year-old coming off American Idol does not make a standards album.  Not if she wants to be the next Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood she doesn't.  Katharine wants to be a STAR.  OK?  She isn't going to be a star doing standards.  Make of that what you want but it's the truth.

"I saw Katharine McPhee when there were about 12 contestants left on American Idol. She blew me away. I loved her grace, her style, her poise, her voice and her hair! I wanted her to be the face of Sexy Hair because she represented everything that I had in my head for the brand: youth, beauty, talent, class, a young sophistication, and sexiness." -- Jim Morrison, CEO of Sexy Hair Products.
