the story that stands out in my mind about this week was when someone posted about how they were in a Student Union at a college. There was a big tv with idol on it. People kept passing it throughout the performances, not paying much attention. However, when kat came on, nobody on the couches, chairs, etc said a word, and passing students all stopped.

It was a show-stopper, literally. It was magic. Kat may have been dressed up maturely that week, but it was by far one of her sexiest makeup/hair/wardrobe moments. The way the camera captured the performance, it was like something from the old 60s variety shows. You'll never see an Idol performance that polished again from a production standpoint. it was like they had all done 100 times before.

Her singing was beautiful. I remember taylor's mother crying!

As for the born to sing the standards, yea, she's got a voice for them. The only thing is, if her album was full of standards, there'd be no artist development, or really identity. She has to make her own music first and then come back and record a standards album.

^Interesting stuff, Ken.  I never heard that about Tay's mom.  I bet the SP loves that!

One story you just reminded me of was a guy who was deaf, or legally deaf (I can't remember the specifics), but he had just gotten some sort of hearing aid and the first thing he heard was Katharine's beautiful voice singing STWOM.  As if finally being able to hear wasn't enough.   Talk about system overload!

This was also the first time Kat used the camera to her best advantage. That prompted a lot of old-timers on the 'AI' board to bring up the olden days of variety shows and how her use of the camera in her performance brought back a lost art form of communicating with the audience watching at home. I noticed that too...and a lot of younger generations probably hadn't seen a contemporary girl singer looking so longingly into the camera and appear to be singing 'STWOM' right to YOU. Kat really mastered that type of communication across a TV screen. If you notice in recent years, most performers who perform on TV hardly ever look directly into a camera as if looking into the eyes of someone.

And then there's Kat's utter sincerity on her face while she sang into the camera. Sure, it's acting, but you know Kat still actually believed every word of what she was singing. That's what made it even more compelling for those who'd never seen anything like it before. Her performance truly reminded us that there's very few performers today who can connect to an audience on such a profound level.

You mean she was only acting?!? She wasn't singing right to ME?!? LOL

^If I remember right, Ken--I think you posted that thread here last summer about that guy who had his hearing restored just in time to hear Kat for the first time. If it wasn't you, then someone took it from either the 'AI' board or a blog somewhere and posted here in Kat Chat around the time I first registered on KMF. I think it was in June of last year--so it's findable if someone's willing to take the time to do a search in this forum.

And, yeah, I remember the story about the college kids stopping what they were doing during Kat's 'STWOM' performance. Ken spread the news about this story over on the 'AI' board that week during the deluge of analyzation we all loved to do after each performance. Apparently kids in college are the only people left in America who don't have ADD. Well, they can't have ADD if they want to listen to long lectures from professors and pass a class.

One note about the title of the song: That's been a common mistake saying the song's "Someone Who'll Watch Over Me.' Doing some research on Gershwin's songography is all that's needed to show the correct sentiment of the song. I remember the more OCD members about standards correcting that on the 'AI' board...including myself.  We all can tell that the right title is actually a lot better anyway. "Someone To" reflects more of a longing of not finding that person yet the singer is pining for to watch over her (or him). Sure, using 'SWWOM' is an easier acronym to say. But 'STWOM' isn't hard to say either as long as you have good diction.

Oh, and Barlo: I still suspect Kat has a window to the world when she looks into a camera. But magic is illusion (or the other way around) as it used to be said.
