Bocelli is a BIG guy. Put K. in heels next to oh, say, Ryan Seacrest, and she makes him look like a munchkin, but next to Bocelli she looks small.
And when I heard him sing CHFIL by himself, I was totally underimpressed. He needed Katharine. He's at his most impressive when he can do things like that note he hit at the JCPJam when K. looked up at him in amazement, then out at the audience, like "Wow, did you hear the same thing I did?"
"It wasn't her fault at all...and it's all because she had to sing the song so many times. Any professional singer's voice would sound just as strained (or worse) after singing 'WWTLF' three times within a couple of hours. "
I disagree. You know I think that Kat has an amazing voice, in fact I would go so far as to say that she has one of the best voices in modern pop music. However, it was very inconsistent on Idol, and she had a few weak vocals on Idol e.g. Who Wants to Live Forever, My Destiny etc. I think the enormity of the situation got to her and she became very nervous at times, which resulted in her being off-key. Sometimes we gotta just accept that on the night it didn't go to plan.
A 'true' singer, someone of Kat's calibre could get up and sing that song three times in one day. It's all about singing correctly and wisely, and I'm sure Momma McPhee's coaching will have taught her all she needed to know.
No doubt she can handle singing it three times in a day. How did she spend all day in the recording studio? But when you add the stress of the competition to everything...it did cause her to oversing at times. It was like a nervous crutch. "Maybe if I sing louder...." or maybe it just happened. Because we all know she's at her best when she just lets herself go with that natural, rich voice. She isn't a power singer, I think she knows that. But perhaps she thought WWTLF needed that in spots. The best part of the song is the final few notes. Actually, the judges repeatedly reminded Katharine of this. She's not going to win the vocal gymnastics. Who cares? When she stays in her range (which is wide...just it starts lower than a lot of female singers) she's about as good as it gets. That's why SOTR worked so well. Maybe hurting her vocal cords is what made that. She couldn't push too hard so it kept her right where she needs to be. And that's why it was so perfect.
Umm...I don't think I'd call IHN "snobbish". You might, might point to the tongue sticking out at Simon moment if you want. I think she was just stunned by the judges comments on IHN because she knew she did well. She freely admitted when she didn't think she did well. She knew she did a great job on IHN....
