The only factor is how good music out there gets marketed and into the media that these potential buyers see or hear. Unfortunately, I think the powers out there who control what people buy in music (and it's mostly the record labels) put a damper on a lot of good things that would probably be bought much more by people who want to hear it. If only the marketing would be better for those things...we wouldn't have to realize that Kat's 'OtR' single will only hit gold status a year from now rather than in the immediate term. It still startles me how many people don't know who Kat is in my area. That's why the Street Team idea is a great thing for quadrants of the country (or world) where Kat is still a question mark. I've already started that process in small doses while I've had time...but things like tonight's 'A Home for the Holidays' helps considerably. As I said in the other thread about the show tonight, I bet Google got a lot of hits under Kat's name after the show aired. For those lurking from discovering KMF in that search: On the self-title situation: If Kat said she had enough control on the content, you'd think she'd have control over the title. Perhaps there's been some deliberations--but I'd still expect some 11th hour minor changes on that album anyway. There's reports Kat's STILL re-tooling some minor things on there, which makes that posted track list possibly not final. That also means that maybe RCA will release a new cover later with maybe a variation on that couch shot (or even a different one)--along with the title 'Never Saw It Comin''.

Which is great because she'd fallen into the 800's only a few days ago. So something is causing people to go order it again. I thought everyone who was going to pre-order had done so already. Maybe the song samples on her MySpace are causing that. And it amazes me that SOTR/MD is still selling. And it's selling more each week (it's got the yellow line on Billboard and has had that for weeks). If we could just get Beyonce and Jeff Foxworthy out of the way so she could be #1. Well, if this Walmart thing counts...I'd imagine ILY/D will be #1 on that next week.

For months I have been trying to be realistic and to lower my expectations for Katharine's CD so as not to be disappointed by the results. It's becoming harder and harder to keep those expectations low with every new song we hear. This will be a first rate CD, no doubt, but her challenge is to compete with the established artists in the same genre.
