I honestly could not be happier. I mean, classic love songs? Even if the contestents had to choose from Bocelli's records alone (I think they don't have to. It's like Kenny Rogers and Country Week) Katharine has the best chance to outshine the others, solely based on this week's performance, but I am looking forward to seeing if anyone else impresses me...but only if it keeps Kat safe

What are your choices for Bocelli/love songs?

I put "The Prayer" down for personal reasons, although, the Italian and the fact that it is written to be a duet may discourage.

Or "Time To Say Goodbye"... but again, Italian and duet. Oh well. One can hope, right?

Katarino McPeeleeni can sing anything...not sure I'd recommend her trying The Prayer...a personal favorite of mine...it might lose a lot if not performed in duet....I don't think contestants are limited to Bocelli songs...he's just coaching the contestants...

I'm going to repeat my country week suggestion because it IS one of the greatest love songs and I'm dying to hear Kat sing it.
"I Will Always Love You", written by Dolly Parton and made famous by the great Whitney Houston. I think Kat could hit this one so far out of the park it'll orbit the moon!

I Will Always Love You is a very popular song.  Vonzell sung it last year, didn't she?

"I will always love you" is too big a risk I think. Most people know it as a Whitney Houston song and I think they would judge her against that version. No matter how good she did, she could land in the bottom three. All of the "lesser" singers are gone and now it's solely week to week on who will go out next.

I think she should stick to songs in the lower range that would give her a chance to perform and not have to focus on hitting the really big notes. I think she should choose something that gives her the chance to sing "to somebody", like on '50's week and this past week. Those eyes and that smile could melt anyone or anything.

I am thinking maybe "Love Story," nah, that's not going to happen. How about "Close to You."

I think you've got a good thought there. I could actually see Kat doing ANY Karen Carpenter song really, really well.

"Close To You" is such a great song, that every time I hear it, It brings chills, although it's 35 years old. I always love the trumpet part, followed by the strings.

My other thought for next season is that they should do a night of Carpenters songs.

I love "Close to You", but I'm afraid it would be considered too "safe" and boring.
How about "Autumn Leaves" by the immortal Nat King Cole, coverered by greats Diana Krall, Eva Cassidy and Andrea Bocelli himself.  Perfect for Kat, no?

Just a thought but overall, to me, it just seems odd for a show with a primarily younger fan base why the show is staying on themes like 50's night, America's Songbook, and now Great Love Songs with an Opera guy. I personally enjoy hearing a lot of these songs but it seems like they might be a little boring to a lot of the under 30 crowd who likely don't know much about Queen or Stevie Wonder much less care a lot for these really older standards. You would think they would get back to a little more contemporary music. It will be interesting to see this week what the performers choose from for the "Greatest Love Songs" category.

^They may be thinking that the contestants don't do particularly well when covering megahits by today's stars. People seem to expect it sound just like the original, hardly a possability. So the older songs give a chance for the contestants to be judged solely by their abilites.

Agreed! I was actually thinking about that the other day...

I also agree that the contestants do better with the older standards. If they sing songs that are well known by the younger crowd, they tend to believe that the contestant sang the song wrong, or off key, even when all they did was change the key of the song.

She should also probably stick with a song that stays away from her upper range, for the most part. She tends to be shrill with the big notes (That's what the critics say, and I don't agree all of the time, but I have noticed that she strains herself sometimes.) "Someone To Watch Over Me" did not have any "screaming" and it still impressed many people...

I think the theme next week is something from Andrea Bocelli, not just a generic love song. Am I wrong? Andrea's songs are very different from say the Carpenter's and are a lot harder to sing (Kat's advantage).

You are probably right in that to get the most universal appeal on her vocals she should stick with the lower to upper middle registers. I think pretty much everyone with ears agrees she is dynamite singing in those ranges. Her very upper register seems to get more mixed reviews. I personally love some of the things she does in the upper register that sound really sexy and sultry like the line "I got to change your view, baby" she did in 'Until You Come Back To Me' almost gave me chills. Also, the up run she did toward the end of Come Rain or Come Shine was awesome and I even liked the upper parts she did in All In Love Is Fair and The Voice Within (although she got mixed reviews on both of those). The only time I really felt she was struggling up there a bit was in WWTLF (almost like her voice was a little worn out) and that's why although I still felt it was very good overall, I would not rank it as one of her very best. I guess its just a matter of opinion, what I consider a very piercing, sultry sound someone else might consider whiny or shrill. So overall, to be the most popular with the most people she might be advised to stay away from doing very much up there in the remaining weeks.

There are so many great love songs.... She will do well.

I adore Bocelli, im wondering how the coaching would be, because that interests me.... He is more towards Opera singing...

I agree with your assessment. Kat's upper register seems to annoy some people, even though I happen to enjoy it. So when every vote counts, even though you can't please everyone, it's best to try to annoy noone.

This is not a very tradicional love song, but I think that "One", which is written by U2 could be perfect for her.

It's a beautiful song and the lyrics transmit messages about love, and overall that everybody has to be one!

One love for kat!

kisses!

Yes, I think Kat has the best chance for success this week. The Classic Love Songs category should really seperate the real singers from the "performers." Luckily, our Kat is both. =) I'm just saying a few of the contestants who are not so good with their technical vocals may have a problem with the theme. =)

I've wanted Kat to sing Unchained Melody from the beginning, so if we could consider that a "Classic Love Song" I'll stick with that. Oh, and if they aren't limited to Bocelli songs, of course. =p I think she'd do that song some serious justice. =) (As if she doesn't do every song she sings serious justice.) =)

I think Katharine will do well this week. The only problem we have is that Katharine has to be in the top 3 to survive. I hope and pray that Katharine does.

I like the idea of 'Your Song'...

How about 'I Only Have Eyes For Your'

This is going to sound odd maybe - but can anyone envision Kat doing 'Dream A Little Dream Of Me' by Mama Cass...good lower range with enough room to move around vocally to make it interesting and stand out a bit from what the others might do...

I don't think they will be singing Andrea Bocelli songs, or opera songs at all for that matter... rather some of the greatest classical love songs ever made. I AM a very big fan of Josh Groban, and I love classical and some opera songs, but I can't imagine AI letting the Idols do them on the show.

But it doesn't really matter. I know Katharine will be SUPERB once again.

Ribbon in the sky would kill. My only concern is this would be Katharine's third Stevie song. No problem for me, but some voters might view this as a lack of versatility. Needless to say those voters should have their phone lines cut.

"At Last" was one of her favorite songs to sing in high school, as I can recall. She sang it at one talent show, at least, but I seem to remember one other time where she sang it. She did an excellent job then. She will smoke with it now.

I would love to hear "Your Song" Problem is, which version does she base it off of? The original or Moulin Rouge (because the younger crowd will not think of Elton John right away)? There's the audience to consider. Remember when she took flak for the Aguilera song? AKA "she was off pitch" when in reality, she merely changed the key? The result might be either "she sang it too much like ____" or "she did not make it her own." Do I make any sense?
