KATHARINE DURING THE TOP 2 RESULTS SHOW Aired On: May 24, 2006 Group Songs (Ford Commercial): Multiple Medleys (“Don’t Stop”) Special Appearances: Clay Aiken, Burt Bacharach, Mary J. Blige, Toni Braxton, Al Jarreau, Live, Meat Loaf, Prince, Carrie Underwood and Dionne Warwick. Katharine’s Songs: “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree”, “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” and “My Destiny”. Eliminated Idol: Katharine McPhee American Idol Winner: Taylor Hicks HOW THE FINALE WENT DOWN (Show opens with a performance of “I Made It Through The Rain” led by Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee. (shots of a young Taylor follow) Katharine (in the lobby outside the audition room in San Francisco): I really, really, really (sings the last really) want to go far in the competition (giggles). Taylor: I’m excited to be here on American Idol. Ryan (voiceover): It’s Katharine versus Taylor. She auditioned in San Francisco. (clip from Katharine’s audition) Simon: Katharine, how old are you? Katharine: I’m 21. Simon: You’re excited, aren’t you? Katharine: I’m very excited! Ryan (voiceover): He took a gamble and came to Vegas. (clip from Taylor’s audition) Simon: Why are you here? Taylor: I want my voice heard. Simon: Why? Taylor: Because I feel like I got one. Ryan (voiceover): Taylor Hicks comes from a state that prides itself on breeding superstars. But things didn’t come so easy in his first audition. (clip from Taylor’s audition) Simon: They will not put you in the final group to be judged by the public. Paula: We won’t know that until we see how you do. Simon: I know it now. Paula: But I say yes. Randy: And I say yes. Paula: Yes, you’re going to Hollywood! Taylor: Wooooo! Ryan (voiceover): Now he’s defied the odds. Taylor (to camera): I was just a guy playing music in a bar. Ryan (voiceover): This silver fox has won over a nation with his soulful spirit and contagious dance moves. Taylor (to camera): This is the American dream by Taylor Hicks. (clip from earlier episode) Simon: I said in the beginning, if you remember, that I didn’t think you should make the finals of this competition. I was wrong. Taylor: Wooo! (clip from earlier episode) Paula: The Soul Patrol is probably on fire tonight. Taylor: Yay! Ryan (voiceover): But meanwhile, McPheever was rising. (clip of Peisha and Katharine in San Francisco) Peisha: You’re going to have so much fun. Katharine: (giggles) Ryan (voiceover): She’s Katharine McPhee, the California girl who won over the judges during her first audition. (clip from Katharine’s audition) Randy: Best voice I’ve heard so far this auditioning season. Simon: You are sailing through the Hollywood, young lady. Randy: Welcome to Hollywood, Katharine! Yeah! Katharine: Woooo! Katharine (to camera): I always dreamed that, you know, I would be on a stage like this and be able to perform in front of millions of people. (clip from Katharine’s “Come Rain or Come Shine” performance) Simon: Tonight, you turned into a star. Paula: There’s something about your voice that just pierces through the heart. Ryan (voiceover): Week after week, she’s proven to America that she has the chops. So it’s girl versus boy. The West versus the South. McPheever versus the Soul Patrol. It is up to you, which one will be your next American Idol? Katharine: It is a nice car. We had a fun time. Taylor: Yeah. Ryan: You should probably have one, Kat. Taylor: Ohhhhhhhhhh! Katharine: Wooooo! (holds up keys for everyone to see) Alright! Ryan: Taylor, why don’t you have one, too. Taylor: Woooooo! (Katharine & Taylor do a little dance with their car keys) Ryan: Let me show you. Two Ford Mustang convertibles waiting for you outside. Let me show you your brand new cars. Katharine and Taylor: Woooooooo! Ryan: Congratulations. Taylor: Thank you. (Katharine hugs him) Ryan: Alright, Taylor or Katharine? That’s the big question. Who has made it? One thing is for sure, whether they win or not, they’ve made a lot of people very, very proud and with that in mind it’s time for another category in the Golden Idols. Proudest family moment. Here are the nominees! Katharine appears resigned to the fact that Taylor is going to win. Taylor still looks a bit nervous) Ryan: Here we go. Let me just tell you that the amount of votes last night was astounding. An incredible 63.4 million came in. That’s more than any president… Katharine: Wow! Ryan: In the history of our country has ever received. But who has won? Voice from the crowd: Taylor! Another voice in the crowd: Katharine! (Rest of the crowd cheers) Ryan: I’d like to introduce Edward Boddington, the chairman of Telescope Incorporated, the independent company that certified the results of the world’s largest voting system. (Edward comes on stage and shakes Ryan’s hand) Ryan: Edward, thank you for being here. Edward: Thank you, Ryan. Ryan: So you’ve got something that we all need, right? Edward: Yep, I’d like… Ryan: How’d the voting go? Edward: It went very well, Ryan. And I’d like to confirm that Telescope has counted and validated the voting results for this season’s American Idol. The results of which are inside this envelope. OK? Ryan: Thank you very much, sir. (Ryan turns to Katharine and Taylor. They are holding hands. Katharine’s left hand with Taylor’s right hand) Ryan: Good luck, guys. Katharine: Thank you. Taylor: (nods his head) (Ryan pauses to let the crowd cheer) Ryan: Here we go. The winner of American Idol, season five is….Taylor Hicks! Taylor: Wooo! (Katharine and Taylor hug for about five seconds. I think Taylor says something because Katharine giggles.) Ryan: Congratulations! (Shots of the crowd, shots of Birmingham, celebration abounds for Taylor. In the middle of this Taylor does a classy thing. He raises Katharine’s left arm up and points at her, urging the crowd to cheer for her. She seems genuinely happy about the result.) Ryan: We have done it. We have found another American Idol. Congratulations to both of you. Katharine: Thank you. (she hugs Ryan) Ryan: Taylor, what would you like to say to your fans? Taylor: SOUL PATROL!!!! Soul Patrol! Ryan: And Katharine, yours? Katharine: Thank you so much. This is a dream come true. I’m so so thrilled to be here. Ryan: We have to thank our friends, our judges…Randy, Paula and Simon. Randy: Congratulations, congratulations. Taylor: Thank you. Katharine: Thank you. Ryan: Thanks to all the artists on this stage tonight. Thank you for making this the biggest season ever. Katharine (exhale): Woooo! Taylor: Woooo! Ryan: And we will do it again. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome your American Idol, Taylor Hicks. (Taylor sings “Do I Make You Proud”, confetti falls, bright lights, sparklers. And American Idol, season five ends)

Katharine owned this night. She sang amazingly well, she looked gorgeous and she handled Taylor's win about as classy as anyone could. I don't think anybody watching this episode would think that Katharine wasn't a star in the making. She so outshone the rest of the girls when they sang together...it looked like the Pussycat Dolls look (go with me). How the lead singer is clearly the star and the rest are just along for the ride. Anyway...so our journey comes to an end. At least the Idol journey. Hahahah...are we going to do this with the Idol Tour? Let's relive the nightmare that was....SHE'S SUCH A DIVA....SHE THINKS SHE'S BETTER THAN IDOL....SHE'S MAKING A MOVIE! SHE ISN'T REALLY SICK, SHE MAKING OUT WITH HER BOYFRIEND IN THE POOL! Sorry!
