The theme is 21st Century.

She HAS to do something modern, and I think this will be the week that separates her from the pack.  I would love to see her do a Christina Aguilera or Alicia Keys ballad.  But maybe she should do something more upbeat? What do yall think?

totally agree. She should choose those songs which shows her powerhouse. No more boring jazzy or something we've never heard before !! i love katharine but i prefer mandisa's song choise. Katharine should really choose those songs which audiences like to listen, and America likes to vote for powerhouse e.g: kelly clackson, clay aiken, fantasia, diana degarmo and carrie underwood, they all are powerhousessssss !!

I'm thinking for Katharine for this week theme, she should sing "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera. I think this would a perfect song for her.

^ Good call. I was thinking "Beautiful" as well. I had this argument with other people on another board, but I really hope she doesn't do Celine or Mariah or some other true Diva. I'm sure she would do fine with them, but when you sing songs by divas, you better be better or America will not like it. At least hold that back for a later round where you need something that just blows people away. We all know she is safe for 3-4 more weeks.

BTW, be nice to people who vote for the idols who are getting the ax. We need those votes for Kat.

I agree with that. I know Katharine will be safe for the next month, at least.

Christina Aguilera would be great for her! And I think she could pull off Celine Dion.

"Beautiful" would be nice, but I'm really dying to hear Kat take on Celene. BTW Chad, your observation about America & its divas is a bit ironic considering that Katharine has already taken on 2 of the great divas of the last millenium in Aretha Franklin and Elle Fitzgerald. I guess America has more respect for its present day divas.

Those who vote(and when i mean vote, i mean 100+ votes) don't remember Aretha or Elle and therefore can't compare. If she screws up Celine, Mariah or Whitney, everyone will know.

I tend to agree. I think Katharine should do something by Alicia Keys or Norah Jones - who are probably the closest present-day counterparts to Aretha and Ella (their Grammy-winning predecessors).

Another contemporary artist that I think Katharine could do a great job with is Katie Melua. I realize that Melua is not very well-known here in the U.S. (except to jazz fans like myself!). But in England she is huge, and has been the top-sellling female artist for the past two years running. In fact, Melua's latest album is still in the Top Ten on Billboard's "Eurochart".) I can pictue Katharine doing a terrific performance of Melua's signature song, "The Closest Thing To Crazy". Besides, Simon loves Melua, and would certainly be inclined to give Katharine a "rave review" for doing a Melua song!

In my opinion, by singing a christina song she will lose alot of support from teenage male fans who desipise christina, which is a bad thing. I think that a celine would be a better choice. Unfortunatly i have never listened to melua so i am not at liberty to say if that is a good song. Hopefully, (and this would be the best case) she will sing a song that was a huge hit within the last 2-3 years but is almsot forgotten now. Then when she sings it better everyone will remember not only her amazing performance, but also the song's former fame. It needs to be an upbeat song s she has done 2 slow songs in the last 2 weeks. "Think" was a very good choice and now she needs to follow it up (though later) with an upbeat song.

On another note, although i know this will never happen, could u imagine Katharine sining a Nightwish song, nwo that would be interesting! hah.

I think she should sing The Voice Within by Christina Aguilera. Personally, I like that song better than Beautiful. Maybe she could try sing a more upbeat song like Fighter. Whatever she does, she'll be amazing!

That is another good suggestion. We are talking music from the first half of the 21st century, 2000 to 2006. The only time I heard a Christina song, was by season 2 finalist, Juila DeMato, when she sang "Beautiful," on the season 2 "American Idol" tour.

I realize that this is off-topic, but I just thought I'd mention that KatieMelua will be the opening act for Il Divo on their American tour in June and July. Ad as you no doubt already know, Simon put together Il Divo, and is producing and promoting them.

hmmm....... she is yet to outdo her audition, that i can tell you! a fan suggested listen to your heart by dht (haven't heard of that not sure if it's an insult LOL) ...very risky to do a mariah and much more a celine.. since her voice is very close to celine's so she's gonna have to nail all the notes. a norah jones is too easy but boring. ai followers are having trouble findind the connection with her. cristina aguilera? hmmm..... fighter? i think she gained popularity with the gay community when she sang a barbra and over male when she did the ella. the gap between her and chris on betting became close after that. how about a ...cher? ahihi ...lauryn hill?

maybe she should sing something upbeat and biitchy! maybe she should sing rock! that'll make chris' supporters think twice! LOL ...not sure what song though! )

Well, I can tell you that Katharine gained popularity with both over-40 males and females when she did an Ella song. (Ella Fitzgerald was a huge Baby Boomer favorite.) But why do you say that AI fans are "having trouble" finding a connection between Katharine and Norah Jones? I mean, it's pretty obvious, isn't it? They appear to have almost exactly the same influences. Katharine has already done a song by Billie Holiday and one by Ella, as well as two by Aretha! And two of the songs were written by Stevie Wonder. The difference is that Katharine is evidently a big Streisand fan as well, so she has that Broadway/musical theater influence in her voice - which Norah doesn't. (Actually, Katharine's style is probably closer to Melissa Errico's than anyone else around today.)
P.S. - I agree with the fan who said that "Listen To Your Heart" by DHT would be a good choice for Katharine. That record has been a big hit on adult-contemporary radio for quite a while now, so it would be familiar to the older segment of the AI audience. And I do think it fits Katharine's style.

I was just on the Katharine McPhee page on www.americanidol.com, and I have learned that Katharine is going to sing "Listen To Your Heart" by D.H.T.

That is a little bit of a surprise.
