Can you believe it? #2 and after 23 weeks, damn that's almost 6 months and a Grammy consideration.

I would love for her to finally get that #1 she so justly deserves. That would be incredible after all this time. Maybe I will have to go buy a couple more! My others might just be worn out by now lol

I don't understand this chart, does anyone? What does it mean? How can she be #2 with only 1,700 sales? They have so many charts at billboard and this record doesn't appear on any others. I'm not ashamed to admit my complete ignorance and bafflement at this! Any simple eplanation of what this means?

Awesome! If she can sell 2,000+ copies next week then she can make it to No. 1!

Phee, it's based on data from Nielsen SoundScan:

How does Billboard chart the hits? Let us count the ways.

SALES

Data for Billboard's sales charts -- which include all of our album charts -- are compiled by Nielsen SoundScan from a universe of merchants that represents more than 90% of the U.S. music retail market. The sample includes not only music stores and the music departments at electronics and department stores, but also direct-to-consumer transactions and Internet sales (both physical albums via Internet, and ones bought via digital downloads). A limited array of verifiable sales from concert venues is also tabulated.

All sales charts use the entire Nielsen SoundScan panel, with the exception of the R&B/Hip-Hop charts which uses a panel of core stores that specialize in the genre. The Nielsen SoundScan system utilizes that same point-of-sale that music merchants use to track their inventory, so you can think of itemized receipt from your last trip to the music store as a ballot cast for our charts.

We are definitely working together -- working on a record together. She sings so magnificently, it's just amazing -David Foster-

I still don't understand it's signifigance. If I were to turn on an a.m. pop radio station (shudder at the thought) I could listen from now until New Years and I would not hear SOTR or MD from this single once. I would however hear the current #1 and #2 songs from some other chart about once an hour and these songs are probably selling hundreds of thousands a week, so again - what do these numbers mean?

I'm not an expert on this things but I would guess that these numbers are Physical Copies sold each week.

Yep. Since we can't have the new album for Christmas it is an excellent idea to buy the single again for gifts.

Well Simon, the Hot Singles chart tracks only songs which were released and sold as singles. In the 'old days' of our youth, virtually every song you heard on the radio was released as a vinyl '45' single. But now, the vast majority of songs played on the radio are album tracks never released as singles. There's no reason to, since there is a VERY limited market for physical single CDs, and they aren't that profitable. Today people either buy the album, or download individual tunes. Neither of which count on the Hot Singles sales chart.

So, to answer your question more bluntly, this chart is a relic of days gone by, and being #1 there doesn't mean a whole lot, except that Kat's beating all the other singles, including Taylor!
