They leave Katharine totally out, every time. I just came across it again, in a brief article from UPI News Service dated 3/18/06 that Simon had AGAIN given his prediction of who would be in the top 3, and his answer was Chris, Taylor & Kellie. What is wrong with him? He put together Il Divo for goodness' sake--an awesome group of singers-- can't he see that Katharine has amazing talent, and why wouldn't he want someone like her signed on to his recording label? It's beyond me. Every time I see his "prediction" though, my heart sinks a bit. He never mentions Katharine at all, and the article says he predicted Carrie to be the winner about this time last year. I think someone may have said he made a prediction ealier in the season, but this article said he indicated the same thing during a phone call this past Thursday. It boggles my mind as to how he can keep saying that, when he just told her last week following her fabulous performance, "Katharine, YOU'RE GOOD" and that she was reminding him of Kelly Clarkson at this stage. I guess I'm just going to quit reading what he has to say and VOTE as much as possible for her every week. Here's the article link if anyone is interested. http://www.realitytvworld.com/news/american-idol-5-judge-simon-cowell-predicts-season-final-three-1007687.php

You're right. Simon said early on last year that Carrie would win, and that's exactly what happened. But . . .
maybe there's another far-fetched possiblity -- that Simon really wants Katharine to win. Since K. got a lot of publicity at the outset (more airtime than other auditioner -- and rightly so), maybe Simon's pulling back a bit and is saving the big push until closer to the finals.
Or maybe he's just jealous that Katharine said Randy was a better kisser!

I was watching the American Idol 4 auditions when Carrie Underwood opened her mouth for the first time. When they came to Simon, the first thing he said was, "You're going to be the next American Idol." (I think... I'm just going from my memory.) The reason that was so significant to me was that the first moment I heard her sing, I KNEW she was a star. She had that certain something that came across the television, and I had the same premonition that Simon did. Carrie Underwood was destined to be a recording artist whether or not she came in first on American Idol. I don't hold it against her. That being said, I wasn't a big fan of hers. I was actually rooting for Vonzell until she got voted out.
Don't fret, I don't think people "listened to Simon" and that's why Carrie won. She is gifted; that's why she won. Frankly, I don't think anyone in AI5 is really standing head and shoulders above the rest. It's not OBVIOUS who's going to win, but I believe Katharine has a great chance to win because her voice is smooth and pretty, she never hits bad notes, and she's pretty- all an American Idol really needs.
Even if she doesn't win, I find it highly probable that someone will call her for a recording contract.
And by the way, who's Kellie?! (Just a rhetorical question. My point being, I haven't even noticed her.)

I agree with Vadia, I get the feeling Simon is down playing Katharine a bit, most likely at the request of the producers. I don't think they were happy with Simon's prediction last year. AI is, above all else, about TV ratings, and anything that makes it appear that there is less of a competition is NOT good for the ratings. Plus early "correct" predictions lead to rumours that the show is "fixed". So, it may be a bit cynical on my part, but I believe AI is using the judges, especially Simon, to guide the voting in a way which they believe is best for the show. BUT in the end I'm sure they realize the value in Katharine, as shown by the tremendous success of Kelly and Carrie as opposed to Fantasia and Rubin. Mainstream pop girl singers are where the $$$$ are.

I've begun to wonder why so much emphasis IS put on Simon's predictions, anyway, as we don't ever hear about the other judges' predictions in the media (even though I realize Simon is connected with the show in a bigger way). It makes me wonder if the judges go home and vote, and I started to wonder if Simon has some people out there paid to "power vote" his "predictions" all the way to the top, to keep his "predictions" as coming true. I know-- it probably sounds paranoid of me! I just hate to think we can vote our hearts out for who we want to win if there's a possibility of the show being "fixed." And that wouldn't be right. It is, the "American Idol," -- not "The Simon Cowell Idol." Sometimes it seems that way, though!

Another thing that I thought was a bit strange was last year when "The Showstoppers" CD came out for Season 4. It was on the shelves here before the AI show was completely over, and it looked like the performances on the CD were listed in the order of the contestants from top to bottom, as they'd been voted off. Carrie's "Independence Day" was the first song on the CD, followed by #2 Bo, and then it looked like it went on down the list from Vonzelle to Anthony, etc. in the order of their leaving the show. I have to say I wondered about that, because the CD already listed Carrie above Bo, right when it was down to the two of them vying for the title. I'm thrilled that she won the competition-- that's not my point, but rather that it seemed a bit "fixed" since the CD listed them in the order of their placement on the show (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc) even though the winner had not officially been announced! I SO HOPE they are not "fixing" these competitions in any way; otherwise, that is very misleading to the public and fraudulent! They do make us think it is "our voting" and our voting only, that keeps people in the show. I HOPE THAT IS TRUE! I guess I'm starting to be of the opinion that the judges just shouldn't be asked in the media for any "predictions"! (And only one judge ever appears to be.) I guess I'm being too analytic about it. I just want it to be done right and fair to all the contestants, including Katharine! (who has all of my votes every week)

Actually, the season 4 CD is not by actual order of elimination, though it isn't far off. The top 4 are correct, but the rest are a bit mixed up. They might have used poll results partway through to determine the order on the CD. Or maybe just some good guesswork. As to why they only ask Simon, well, he's the only judge with generally fair and unbiased opinions. Randy is a little inconsistant in his evaluations, and Paula thinks nearly everyone is great.

Doesn't Simon also partly produce this show, along with Simon Fuller? I read a big article about it on AOL News a few days ago. It sounded as if his position on the show is very lucrative for him, and he admitted in the article that he plays the part of "Judge Dredd" (his words, not mine) for a reason. My analytical and "need to have proof" nature wants me knowing somehow that the show is not in any way fixed. I was new to AI in Season 4 last year; does anyone remember past so-called "predictions" he made that did or did not come to life? He can predict all he wants and so can the rest of the world; I just want to know that it's only the public's voting that will determine the winner (as they make us believe). After last Tuesday night's performance, Fox 4 News reported that the scene with Ryan and Kelly and her tarantula eyelashes, the scene with Ryan taking Mandisa's shoes off, and the two young girls bringing a poster up on stage to Kevin were all REHEARSED. I thought that was a downer. Now what seems like spontaneous moments on the show may in fact not be.

Actually, I get the feeling that maybe Simon really wants a man to win American Idol this year, and that is why he is touting Chris and Taylor. (For some reason, he seems to like Kellie, too.) Myabe it's just because women have already won three out of four times, and he wants the male contestants to feel that they have a reasonable chance at coming out on top, too.

I don't think there was much doubt that Carrie was the winner last season. I think most people thought she would be the winner a couple of weeks into the top 12. They did everything they could to build up Bo in the weeks prior to the finale... but it was never really in doubt.
My point is, this year it's obvious they want the competition to seem neck and neck. They've called season 5 the best, most diverse group they've ever had. Both Randy & Simon are on the record saying 5-6 people could possibly win it. They're simply making a TV show. Kellie Pickler is great for TV, as is Ace Young. Are they the best vocalists? No, but Fox wants to keep them around to keep things interesting. My opinion is they build the contestants up just to tear them down later. So what does that mean for Katharine? Don't worry, Fox wants to keep her around too... So if you hear them talking about her less, it's just because she's getting a large number of votes. I think Katharine is going to get better and better every week. In my opinion she's a shoe in for the top 3 and has a great chance to win.
