American Idol is a synchronated, well-oiled machine, right? Not from what I'm hearing in bits and pieces around the web. It seems that AI is more a nighttime soap opera, complete with heroes, villians and power struggles. The controversy started last summer, when star judge millionaire mogul Simon Cowell renegotiated his contract with the show.Simon wanted to launch his own show, "The X-Factor", but AI producers balked at the idea. Instead, they offered him an extra fat salary and the right to sign the winner to his recording label. Simon accepted the offer, but is obviously "distracted" this season, as one is prone to be when forced into a corner. That brings us to AI season 5. Apparently Simon's label decided they wanted a male winner, and were especially fond of the idea of a Bo type rocker. Enter Chris, and the extraordinary amount of love Simon has heaped upon him. On the other hand, Taylor is a niche type of performer that Simon's company has little interest in signing. So why all the guy-guy finale predictions? Well, I believe Simon feels that Chris can take Taylor in the finale, but might have a harder time against Kat. So where are the producers in all this? We know executive producer Nigel Lythgoe has supported Kat in his interviews. He chastized the judges for their harsh criticism of "I Have Nothing". And he went out of his way to show Kat and Chris as the top 2 that week. Importantly, that was never done before in Idol history. Think about it- the producers made sure to stick it in Simons face that he was wrong, made him appologize, and got the audience used to thinking about the possability of a Chris-Kat finale- all in one results show! So my opinion is that the producers, and Nigel in particular, want what's best for the ratings in the short run, and the show in the long run- and that is Kat and Chris at the Kodak Theater. And I don't think they really care which one wins, as long as it's a great show with terrific ratings. Simon and AI are NOT on the same page this year! Bear in mind that this is largely hearsay, conjecture and opinion. But it sure is interesting to think about!

b…I don’t think there is any doubt that there are a number of agendas at play on AI …and I have posted many times about my feelings on Simon’s jaded judging and preferential treatment of Chris…as well as his inappropriate off-air comments and predictions. Simon is making a mockery out of the integrity of the show…while in the past his acerbic comments were to be expected - and were often deserved towards the contestants - this year, his vested interest in the winner is clearly obscuring his impartial judgment (if he ever had it).
Even his mildly complimentary comments towards the other contestants often seem to be begrudgingly given…Kat delivered arguably one of the top 5 performances of all time on the show (Black Horse) and the best Simon could allow himself to say in a dead-panned way was that he ‘…much preferred that to the other (AAO) it was different, younger, and showed more personality…’ all of which are true, but the way he said it came off weakly…he also said Taylor did a ‘…horrible, horrible… wedding performance…Paris was ‘…screechy and annoying…’ …Elliott was ‘…disjointed…. and lucky to have two songs tonight … Kat’s (fist song) …’was a mess…’ …while Chris’ second ‘screech’ escaped with only ‘….your voice is going…you’ve got to be careful’.
Simon’s influence on the show is undeniable…I wish the impartiality of his judgments and actions were as well. I have no problem with any of the remaining contestants....they are all gifted...but Simon said publicly...'If I had to put money on it...I'd say Taylor and Chris will be in the final...' and then he gave Kat an outside chance. The fact is he DOES have his money on the winner....he will produce them...so again, it is a conflict of interest for Simon to sit as a judge AND be in a position to influence the voting, knowing that he can affect the outcome and reap higher financial return if he 'pimps' his chosen favorite Chris. If Simon is so confident that Chris will do well after the show is over, he doesn't have to go out of his way to pimp Chris...why doesn't he just let the competition unfold naturally and then sign Chris even if he doesn't win.
In terms of the different agendas....I agree with your comments....the producers are interested in high ratings...and Simon seems to be using the show to further his own interests.

A lot of things make more sense when I think in terms not of "a behind the scenes agenda" but "many behind the scenes agendas." And it seems clear that Simon should not be part of the proceedings, but of course he is and that's that, and in the final analysis it all depends on whether everybody votes their fingers off. Simon should go recuse himself. (Look that up in your Funk & Wagnall's.)

Just a thought, but didn't Simon say no to both Chris and Taylor during auditions? Elliot's audition has not been released so we don't know about him. I wonder why Simon would initially say no to Chris, but then get on his side? Hmmm, and yes, it's does seem that Nigel Lythgoe has teken Kat's side somewhat. I trust he knows true talent when he sees it. =)

I remember Simon saying no to Taylor- I don't think Simon has ever seen Taylor as a marketable entity. But I don't remember Chris' audition at all...

I only remember Simon telling Chris that he thought he rushed the song and saying no to him, but Paula and Randy both liked him.

I believe not until recently, AI executives begin to sense the momentum that Katharine has established and realize that she is coming big (like a hurricane prediction). Hence, you are seeing a change of tone in what they are saying, like Simon said even though he still thinks Chris and Taylor will be in the finale, he can't rule out Kat as she's getting better and better; and now Nigel is saying that American can decide a girl to win this year. Things are changing and we can make it happen if we vote hard enough. Guys and gals, it's all up to us now!

Maybe what Simon was really saying is that her vote totals are getting better and better every week. She is improving every week indeed but anyone could see early on from her audition to her first top 24 performance "Since I Fell For You" that she was a cut above what this show usually sees. I wonder if a lot of people saw that uniqueness but are like me, not normally avid voters, but when I saw her, with all her talent, standing in the bottom two only a few weeks into the finals competition, I vowed that if she survived that night I would vote full out for her for two hours straight until she completed the show and I have. Even the night she fell in the bottom two I had voted for her 20 to 25 times which is normally pretty good for me but the thought of the show going on for 9 more weeks without her was not acceptable to me so it motivated me to vote like never before. I'm just wondering if this happened to a large segment of people because since that night she has never been in danger and has not seen the bottom three. Her momentum continues to build and we HAVE to get her to the Kodak theater! I say this because I very much liked Vonzell Solomon last year who was a very gifted, likable singer that finished third, and you know what? I don't ever hear of her anymore. Carrie and Bo I hear plenty about but not Vonzell. Let's not let anything like that possibly happen to Kat. We have to at a minimum get her to the finale and then do our best to get her the title.

To be honest with all of you, anything is possible when it comes to hidden agenda between the producers, the judges and everyone else involved in AI. After Constantine went home prematurely last year, I thought that my votes never counted because I remembered voting like mad for him the night before Black Wednesday. This year, I swore off voting for anyone although I already knew from the beginning that Kat is who I would like to closely follow. As weeks went by, I still was not voting until the bottom 2 (that I would consider to be ash wednesday - not quite black, just ashen). I decided, what if it mattered? So I did begin the votes. However, I still believe it in my heart that the AI producers have the last say at who wins this contest.

That's probably EXACTLY what he's saying.

I think this describes alot of us. I was a big Carrie fan last year, but never voted more than 10-20 times for her, even in the finale. I didn't even realize many people ACTUALLY VOTED for 2 HOURS! Seeing Kat in the bottom 2 changed my perception for good. In that regard, it may have been the best thing that could have happened to her. But I doubt I could ever be this devoted to any other AI contestant EVER.
Her momentum continues to build and we HAVE to get her to the Kodak theater! Katharine is the first and only contestant I have ever voted for. This girl blew my socks off! I will fully support her any way I can.

I was gonna ask... My first thought was that it could use a forum title that reflects the content a little better. Like maybe how to help McPheever spread faster. I mean, if you see one entitled Voting Techniques, or How To Supercharge Your Voting, that really tells you more. Just a thought.
