"Like warm honey poured on his poor tortured soul"  - Pheenomenum

"It's All Coming Back To Me Now" was a highlight of the finale with brilliant theatre, vocals,  and emotion packed into a single all too short performance.   IMO it was one of her best of the season and one that I go back and watch time after time (thanks Vinman!!).

The history of this song and how it ended up being performed by Meat Loaf and Kat is very interesting
and raises some questions that I don't have the answers to but I will speculate anyway.  I didn't think much about the song or its history until a comment by Kenneth in another post where he said that this was the first time Meat Loaf performed it live even though it was written for him in 1983.

A brief history follows.  The Wikipedia link for those who want the full version is:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It's_All_Coming_Back_to_Me_Now

This song was written by Jim Steinman for Meat Loaf in 1983 for "Bat out Hell II" which was to follow the incredibly popular BOH I.  Steinman says that he attempted to write the most passionate, romantic song that he could ever write and had Wuthering Heights in mind as he wrote it.  Ultimately the song was not used in BOH II released in 1986, but was going to be saved for BOH III (now releasing in 2006).

Steinman released his own album in 1989, with IACBMN sung by Elaine Caswell.  This album was not a popular success.  Steinman then gave the song to Celine Dion and it was released in 1996 reaching #2 in the US and #3 in the UK.

In an interview, Meat Loaf said that, in his mind,  the song was always meant to be a duet and his version with Marion Raven will be released October 2006 although the video for the song has been out since August 2006.

First, I would like to give HUGE props to AI/19E for getting this song on the show and to get Meat  Loaf to sing it live with Kat.

Questions;

Who proposed the song for Katharine? Was it Nigel? Simon? What about David McPhoster?  David was one of the producers on Celines "Falling into You",  the album that had IACBM on it and David would have been well aware of the song and its potential for Kat.

Why Meat Loaf?  I think that is easier.  With BOH3 releasing in the fall this would give him mass market exposure.

How much was Jim Steinman involved?  Will Kat be doing a JS song on her album (think Bonny Tyler and Total Eclipse of the Heart)?

Was Kat ever considered for BOH3?  I think the timing was wrong.  The video was released August so it may have been filmed early in 2006.

I think its uncanny that Steinman said he was thinking of Wuthering Heights when he wrote this song when many on the forum have proposed Kat for the Catherine role in a movie remake.  In any case, it remains a bravura Kat performance and certainly one of my favorites of the year.

I know one answer. Nobody proposed the song to Katharine, she was told she'd be singing it with Meatloaf.

This is the moment for me all season, if I had to pick one.

Meatloaf knew well in advance of the finale show that  he would be singing with Kat, he told his softball teammates a month before the show, and has said in interviews that the producers of American Idol were persistant and agressive  in pursuing him for the duet with Katharine.

If you have enough computer to run it the HD version is even better than Vinman. (originally posted by trist)

I've noticed that these threads quickly become Meatloaf bashing threads around here and it starts two posts after this one.

Beret... this was a Steinman/Meatloaf song from the get go. What does Brian McNight have to do with anything?

CRB;

Meatloaf knew well in advance of the finale show that he would be singing with Kat, he told his softball teammates a month before the show, and has said in interviews that the producers of American Idol were persistant and agressive in pursuing him for the duet with Katharine.

A month before would have put Kat in the final 5 right (the final 5 all did duets), and the producers were set to have Kat do this song no matter where she finished. This fits with the David McPhoster theory. IHN was April 25. The finale was May 25 ... a month before the finale.

Persistant and aggressive is very interesting. It seems like someone on the team had a vision of what it could turn out to be (and did).    David was in "duet" mode as they were busy planning the JC Penney Jam.

Great OP Cornelius!

I also wonder whose idea it was, it was an inspired choice, but we probably never will know for sure.

If I had to guess, though, I'd probably guess Nigel. Though Phoster could have had some input too!

Personally I love this performance. And what better way for Meatloaf to sing it as a duet with Kat! She added MUCH to the performance and I simply loved it!

I was just out reading blog/board/forum  entries from the day after the finale show for clues of the "missing " KROQ interview and found this one and thought  some fans of this performance might enjoy the enthusiam and insight of this post  (this is a post  from the televisionwithoutpity  forum board)

Did I DREAM that Meat Loaf duet? What surreal fun!

It MADE my whole TV season. 1) The fact that it was happening at all; 2) That it was on the Idol stage (Next year: Jim Steinman Night!!); and 3) The fact that they ACTED IT OUT -- very reminiscent of the "I Would Do Anything For Love" video, which has the Beauty and the Beast story. Who is the GENIUS who came up with this pairing? Only Kat would be up for such an over the top -- bordering on "experimental" -- Idol performance. And she rocked it. There was a moment there, when Kat first started to sing, and Meat Loaf looked over at her like he was just discovering her for the first time (all "who is this delectable morsel that has wandered into my lair?"), and I thought "what are they DOING? OMG they're doing Phantom of the Opera!" and I haven't stopped smiling since.

Yeah Meat Loaf wasn't his old self, but he's MEAT LOAF -- to me, he's bigger than any damn KEY.

Kat went out with a classy bang last night. Anyone watching for the first time this season would have been flabbergasted with the voting results.

I enjoyed reading this and thougt other fans of this performance might too.  I think he is conceding the Meatloaf was a bit off key...but who cares!

CRB; Thanks for finding this. This a great review and kind of surreal, just like the performance.   I liked the comment...

Kat never got enough props during idol for the risks she took and the "performance" that she brought to her numbers. This one really brought it all out for me.

CRB, you're the BOMB! Thanks for posting that comment. I didn't think people got what ML and Kat did that night. Only true blue broadway would understand it.

Cornelius...you are a genius and I agree with what you said 100% regarding Kat never getting any recognition for the chances that she took when she sang Elvis, Stevie Wonder, Whitney and Christina A. (although she has no choice with the Elvis one).

' "Definitely" is misspelled so often it bugs me as I suspect it goes Groucho. '
Wait a minute, how did you know I was an English major way back when? Just curious. And considering that I just spelled just "juts" I can't say a whole lot.

Anyway, this is an interesting point that I hadn't thought a whole lot about--the whole thing about theatricality, dramatic performances, originality of presentation, etc. I keep hearing people refer to Taylor as a "great performer" as though it were a totally different category from being a great singer, and actually I suppose it is, but you could do the same thing for Katharine. The Girl In The Yellow Dress practically redefined American Idol (details probably unnecessary). Then she becomes the Shook Up Hound Dog who dances like a maniac (whole different vibe). And then there was The Girl On The Floor (the shoeless girl on the floor, no less) who danced on her knees, for pete's sake. She was really pushing the limits, not to mention being pretty hard on her wardrobe.

And when she walked out onstage for the ML duet, that was one of those heart-catches-in-your-throat moments. She looked great and sounded great, and the sheer contrast between the two of them was...I may have to go consult a thesaurus here. Meatloaf waving that red kerchief was like watching the bull waving the cape at the matador, one of those perhaps bizarre but unforgettable moments. When I first heard about this, I couldn't think anything but WTH, but somehow it worked. Just like the final duet with Taylor worked. Some of it was just working off of the contrast, the Phantom of the Opera thing mentioned above (I am not knocking ML or Taylor! it's just an analogy). I'm sure Katharine's career got a huge bounce from AI, but boy, they got their money's worth out of her too.

I actually just heard the version of this song that's on Meatloaf's album. Not to knock the girl who sings it with him, but she just sounds dull and lifeless compared to Kat. Meat should definitely have re-recorded this song with Kat instead then it would have been really great. As it stands now it's not worth listening to when I can just rewatch the AI performance.

OT: I just want to say to Cornelius... Nice signature!

That's the point. The first time Meat sang this live as a duet was with Kat. He never recorded it until BOH 3. I don't know when he recorded it for BOH3 but I suspect early in 2006. The only other version that has had any airplay was Celine's 10 years ago.

I just watched Celine's version on YouTube. it's interesting to see it as a solo, since the first time I heard it was the AI finale duet.

What is so fascinating about this duet is that  the songwriter envisioned the song as a power ballad sung by, well if you saw the YouTube version with Celine, that is his vision.  That is the story , the way he saw it.  Cornelius  posted a great backstory cut & paste in the other God Bless the Child Thread on this songs history and orgins that you might want to read.  I'll tack it to the bottom of this post.

And as Kat woud say:    And now....  Mea
