I thought this letter was quite humorous and really puts into perspective how ridiculous most of the criticism Kat gets really is. It was posted on Katharine's American Idol message board and I've pasted it below:
Katharine,Based on what I've seen in these boards here is all you need to do to get more fans:1) Stop smiling so much- people perceive that friendly warm smile as a sign of confidence and arrogance - remember: You should not act like you belong in this competition, let alone have people think you believe you could possibly win.2) Try to Smile more - a lot of people out there think you are cold and heartless!3) Ask the lighting people to just darken the stage while you are performing - if you look too good there will be a lot of jealousy -4) Try not to sing so well ! IF the crowd cheers to loud or the Judges thro a lot of praise your way there again will be a lot of jealousy and bitterness towards you - You may want to just do a really bad job and then admit that you butchered the song and apologize over and over again - I believe that is what the public wants in the next American Idol (boy those will be great live concerts)5) If you are in the top 3, say "No Thanks" and move to the other group - People get mad when you stand in the top group ( "She acts like she knows she belongs in that group" ) - if they make you stay in the top group try to look very very grateful (not happy).6) If you are in the bottom 3 - please do not look nervous or scared (it comes across to others as outrage and shock) - but don't smile either cuz then people will say that somehow you know that you are not the one that is leaving.7) Do not look at the Judges while you are singing _ (none of the other contestants play to the Judges why should you get to? - well some of them don't - I guess)8) Do not move around on stage while performing - You are not all that (I hear) but do not stand still either that's too dull!9) Finally just be yourself! But It would be nice if you could A)change your hair every week with extensions or weaves B) Shout woo! every so often C) DO some other band's arrangement and let people think it was your original brainstorm - and use more eyeliner D) mispronounce a few words and finally change your life history - you 've had it waaaay too easy in life and since that is your fault there is no way you should be allowed to win a singing competition .These rules should be easy enough to follow and then you will have everyone on your side.
