Ok, I was trying to think of a good song for her, and I think "At Last" a la Etta James is the ticket. Although I would like to hear a more uptempo song from her one of these days! That's why I was upset that she changed her Queen song. As far as classic jazz goes, Cole Porter's "So In Love With You Am I" would be so sweet or even his "In The Still Of The Night". I agree that any song by the Carpetners would rock even though her normal pitch is a little higher than Karen's.

I just hope NO ONE sings "Unchained Melody" or "I Will Always Love You". Those songs are TOO cliché and far too karaoke for this competition.

One of the piercing comments that I read about Kat is that everyone already knows that she can sing and ballads are her forte. What they said to continue that sentence is this: Show us something else. I don't agree with them but that is the comment.

I think that this week is crucial for Kat to continue with her momentum but if she chooses another ballad, the critics will continue to say what they've said before and there goes the new fans. I believe that whatever song she chooses to sing she will do good. If it is another ballad, she will be criticized even if she blows them away. However, Kat does not have too much choice. Love songs predominantly are ballads. So, let's all prepare ourselves.

I am praying for the best for Katharine. I believe in her talent and hope that we could all pull her ahead of Taylor and Kellie.

I agree that she must show another dimension to her capabilities…..she  will continue to nail every ballad she attempts…and those fans that appreciate her vocal ability on the ballads will remain solid supporters…but until she shows more diversity she won’t attract a large faction of the new fans who are waiting to see something more…like you said, this week, it will be difficult to do anything but a ballad, but hopefully the following week will give Kat a chance to break out and pick up the pace, and hopefully a new legion of converted supporters…

Kat is not much different from the other (my) top 4… each has a strength in a particular style…but I feel Kat is best positioned to ‘cross-over’ to another styles…much like Chris did…he is ‘rock’ to the core but surprised many with his ballad performance….even Kellie, when she did BoRhap…did not fool anyone that she was a rock singer, but at least showed she could make the temporary transition with reasonable success…if Kat could just temporarily break out of the mold she’s in, and deliver one solid high-energy rock song…people would look at her subsequent performances in a different light…'Think' and 'Elvis' were good higher-energy performances, but Kat needs to refresh the memories of the viewing public that there's more depth to her that they may currently feel...perhaps she can’t ‘out-rock’ Chris, ‘out-soul Taylor, or ‘out-country’ Kellie, but if she adds some more substance to people’s perception of her versatility I think she will win over a lot of new fans…to have a successful music career, she doesn't have to change anything ...but to win Idol, she definitely does.

I would love to hear "Your Song" Problem is, which version does she base it off of? The original or Moulin Rouge (because the younger crowd will not think of Elton John right away)? There's the audience to consider. Remember when she took flak for the Aguilera song? AKA "she was off pitch" when in reality, she merely changed the key? The result might be either "she sang it too much like ____" or "she did not make it her own." Do I make any sense?

Yes, you make perfect sense. =) The Moulin Rouge version is much more exciting, and I think she would sound great singing it. Maybe should could so something in between the original and that version? I love the Elton John version, but it's just not that exciting. =)

i checked the supposed list they can choose from
http://idolforums.com/index.php?showtopic=419964&st=60

i think she might do al green' s "let s stay together. we all know she loves him. she could do a really sexy version of it since it s impossible not to do dance when singing that song.
my personal pick would be "i wanna know what love is" but i also i m also strongly hoping for "the first ever i saw your face"...i d completely freak

O.K. I'm with you on 'First Time...' Kat would really knock that one out of the park...she would capture and hold the audience....emphatic delivery...it's got enough range modulation that it wouldn't be as boring as some of the other available choices...good suggestion..

Oh... I would cry bigger tears than what I shed when I saw her audition for the first time... if she sings "first time"... hehe

Only, it's another ballad. Would she take critism for that, too?

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. That's definitely the song Katharine should sing next week. She'd hit the ball right out of the park with that one.

Do you think Let's Get It On by Marvin Gaye could be considered a love song? =p Haha. Sorry, just a thought? =)

LOL, JxExDxEx.  You just WANT to hear Katharine singing that song -- over, and over, and over, and . . .  ;)

And how can we blame you?!

I wonder how large a list they have to choose from. Heck, probably half the songs ever written, more or less, are love songs at some level.

I also wonder if this is the week they will have them sing two songs. They can get twelve songs in in an hour if they move it along. Whether it is this week or next, I think when it gets to that point, Katharine needs to use one of the songs to sort of rock out - not like Chris, but to get out of her comfort zone. In other words, stay with what she is comfortable with in one song and challenge herself and the audience with the other.

^^Agreed, I’m always nervous by her song choice which has been bothered me the most. While other contestants pick some popular or easy listening songs, Kat seems to live in her own world & picking a song that some people feel unapproachable. But Kat is a smart girl, so hopefully, she learned from the mistakes. I really think WWTLF is her misstep. If she did DSMN, I can see she’s nailing "At Last" this week. But can’t blame her though, because every week she needs to sing like it’s the last time in the competition. She chose the song that shown her vocal strength. Still I have a feeling she might do At Last anyway (because Barbra Streisand once did it), but I’m not sure how the audience will response and that would enough for her to carry the momentum from STWOM. As much as I don't want her to sing a ballad, I prefer "At Last" over "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". IMO, both songs are predictable, and predictable are boring. I think "Let's Stay Together" is a good choice as well as "Best Of My Love". Vonzell sang BOML last year, and imo, it’s a pretty weak performance as well as her studio version. Kat will do much better however, I feel Paris might want to sing it.

Anyway, the song choice also depends on other contestants as well. As the competition is getting tougher, I hope Kat picks the song that will make her stand out of the pack. It doesn’t need to be the hardest song that ever done on the AI. I actually hope she’ll sing something more current. So my personal choices are Time After Time (Eva Cassidy remade it in 2000), It Must Have Been Love by Roxette or Building A Mystery by Sarah McLachlan.

Good luck Kat!!

^You raise a good point. "First Time..." is a really beautiful song, but I'm also concerned that is would be percieved as "too slow" and "boring" by the greater audience, especially the young people.

Next week, I think, they start doing 2 songs each.

If you want a full schedule for the rest of the season:
May 2nd-2 songs each-5 left
May 9th-2 songs each-4 left
May 16th-3 songs each with Clive Davis joining Randy, Paula and Simon. (1 song picked by Clive Davis, Randy, Paula and Simon will each pick a song for the final 3, and 1 song picked by the contestants themselves.
May 23rd-The finale, 3 songs each, 1 original song, 1 from the Idol catalog, and a repeat performance.

The finale, 3 lines each for the 2 finalists, and 4 hours to call.

Too funny...and from a strict interpretation of the song title...yes, I guess the argument could be made that it is a love song..or related to the base inspirations thereof...

Thanks for the scheudule, william. That means that Kat will be crowned American Idol 2 days before I graduate! Wouldn't that be an exciting week? I have faith it'll happen. =)

WE FIRST HAVE TO GET KAT TO THE

           KODAK THEATRE, RIGHT?

              AND TUESDAY'S FAST APPROACHING!!!

.....SO ONCE AGAIN IT’S TIME FOR US ALL -- INCLUDING US FORUM COMMENT WRITERS + ANYONE LIVING OUTSIDE THE STATES + THOSE WHO FEAR MAKING A WIFE OR GIRLFRIEND JEALOUS, TO GET OUT OF OUR COMFORT ZONES & ‘LEAP INTO ACTION’ (as my boss in the space program often says)!!!!!

LET’S CALL OR EMAIL ALL OUR FRIENDS & ASK THEM TO RAPIDLY REDIAL EVERY PHONE THEY HAVE (OR TEXT MESSAGE IF THEY HAVE CINGULAR’S TXT MSG PKG) FOR KATHARINE THIS TUESDAY NITE & EVERY TUESDAY NITE STARTING RIGHT AFTER THE LAST SONG, AND UNTIL THE LINES ARE BUSIED OUT JUST OVER 2 HRS LATER!

[Just below, in blue type & quotes, I’ve included the email/phone message I’ve been using for about 2 weeks with GREAT results – this updated version includes a video link so the recipient can easily see Kat’s performance of "You’re Bringing Out The Elvis in Me" on AI ...try the link yourself ...you’ll like it!]

SUGGESTED EMAIL OR PHONE MESSAGE TO FRIENDS, RELATIVES OR ACQUAINTANCES

(You're encouraged to copy/paste the text in quotes below into a text editor, modify it as you may care to, then email it to everyone in your address book and/or use it as a phone script):

"Dear __________, I’m emailing you (or calling you) to ask a HUGE favor. If you can receive a live telecast of Fox’s American Idol, could you please watch it on Tuesday (it airs at 8pm Eastern Time  every Tuesday) ....And If you agree with me that contestant Katharine McPhee gives the best performance (here comes the big favor I’m asking for)....

.....PLEASE RAPIDLY REDIAL EVERY PHONE YOU HAVE TO VOTE FOR KATHARINE TUESDAY NITE, STARTING RIGHT AFTER THE LAST SONG & UNTIL THE LINES ARE BUSIED OUT ABOUT 2 HRS LATER. (Since it’s an 866-type number it’s FREE, no matter how many times you dial, and she’ll receive 1 vote each time the number rings for you.) [OR, IF YOU HAPPEN TO HAVE CINGULAR’S TEXT MESSAGE PLAN, YOU CAN ALSO VOTE RAPIDLY & EASILY THAT WAY]

I know this is a gigantic favor to ask, but I have been following her on Tuesdays for quite a while and I’m afraid she may be in danger of being "voted off" because there are lots of angry, hateful comments about Katharine by viewers all over the Internet. Many of these negative comments are obviously a twisted expression of jealousy or envy. Other negative commentors must simply believe Katharine is too good to be true --that she’s really a Hollywood fabrication, not the gifted natural performer I am convinced she is! In my opinion, Katharine McPhee is the most talented (therefore the most likely to be successful) of ANY contestant in American Idol’s history! It would be a travesty if excessive "popularity contest voting" caused her to lose!

Thanks! I'll be forever indebted to you!

(Your Name)

PS: Take a couple minutes to watch Katharine perform on American Idol. Just click here, then scroll down & click the "Play" button: http://musebay.com/2006/04/05/katharine-mcphee-youre-bringing-out-the-elvis-in-me/

PSPS: It’s a good idea to try out & compare any different links such as cell, land line, VOIP, etc that you have access to, since busy signals can result from traffic anywhere along the signal path, as well as at the receiving end. And this can vary dramatically from time to time & from locale to locale! (However, I also believe just plain old re-dialable phones work fine, and they’re FREE for 866 #’s. Please email or call me if you have any questions – I’d love to hear from you.)"

Jaded... stay out of your parents old 8-track tape collection!! ...or at least pick 'Muskrat Love' (I want to hear Kat do those muskrat sounds...burrrr..burrrr..that would be elegant - and it would sure break down the 'perfect' barriers!)

O.K. since you obviously have such eclectic music tastes...one of my suggestions was 'Dream a Little Dream of Me' by Mama Cass...what do ya think?
