Just saw the performance on You Tube! As always, it's wonderful to hear Kat!! Loved her cover of "Save The Last Dance For Me" - She puts her own special spin on everything she sings!! My only complaint . . . sure wish they had done some close ups so we could really see her beautiful face! Perfect to see Kat with a fabulous fireworks backdrop and that wonderful orchestra! Great job!

Hats off to NBCWith over 3 million people lined up along the east river, the Macy's Fireworks was a super hour of reminding us of FREEDOM. they saved the best for last with the performance by Katharine, and she did a stellar job based on the fact of all the side noise going on.
groucho- Katharine's performance was what NBC expected.She captivates the screen and we shall see what they have in store for her.

All in All, it was a super way to kick off the 4th of July weekend with Katharine and fireworks
The arrangement was a bit bombastic (and it was obviously arranged by Macy's hired staff and not David Foster), but it provided the goosebumps for the surroundings and occasion. Some of us were hoping she'd slow it down and give a real edge to the song. Nevertheless, an arrangement like that would have probably seemed inappropriate for such a patriotic show designed for the family. While it seemed that Kat was singing with an arrangement designed for a symphony pops orchestra, she proved she can work wonders with arrangements that may not be typical and have to fit a certain criteria. Best of all, Kat's vocal timbre was as pure as spring water as usual.
I recommend watching the HD download in the media section if you thought the music or fireworks were overpowering. I have an HDTV, though still haven't looked into getting HD channels, so the details didn't stand out on my TV as they did through the 1080 download. You'll notice things like the older military couple to Kat's left and how that older guy perks up the minute Kat goes into her upper registers. Yes, now you know why the median age in her fanbase tilts older.
Seeing that umbrella Kat's holding in the initial still captures, I thought it was maybe her unique way of shielding herself from the sound of the fireworks. Apparently, though, there was a mist as evidenced by others holding umbrellas in those VIP seats around her on the pier. Fortunately, the fireworks were far enough away that she wouldn't have had to experience everybody doing sign language to communicate with her until her hearing returned.
To show you how good that 1080 download is, just watch the panorama shot capturing Kat on the pier with the wider shot of the crowd and fireworks in the background. Pausing that gives you that awe-inspiring feeling of American nationalism. It was a true symbolic gesture there of one of America's best entertainers experiencing the American Dream when so many people here need to be inspired with that concept again.

Funny, I thought the arrangement was outstanding. I liked how the orchestra stayed out of the way while Kat was working through the lyrics, then added interesting counter-melodies in between Kat's singing, building the tension all the way through.
Didn't get to see the performance on TV, but it sounded like Kat was singing live against a canned recording of the New York Pops. Was there any sign of the orchestra? It seemed like Kat couldn't find the beat at the beginning, which would indicate that she was having problems with the sound. I was pleasantly surprised by Kat's overall performance, though - I didn't think beforehand that "Save the Last Dance for Me" was Kat's kind of song. I have no problem with the umbrella, either - don't want her to get electrocuted on national television!
