I missed the boat on this, but in early January, Ryan and the 3 stooges listed some bests and worsts from the show's history. Paula named Kat as the singer with the most disappointing career. I wonder if she meant that "Kat blew her chance," or that "Kat was a victim of bad luck?"

I think Paula was considering Kat's first CD sales compared with her potential sales. Obviously Paula sees Kat as a potential multi-platinum superstar, just as we do! On the other hand, it's almost an insult to Daughtry to be considerered as having the most surprising level of success. I wonder what they were expecting?
Paula thought Katharine had alot of potential, but she tought her cd sales weren't what they turned out to be. She thought that was unfortuante. Simon and Ryan also thought Tamyra was going to be a huge success, but they were disappointed that it didn't work out.
So why isn't Taylor Hicks listed in the most disappointing? He won?
I think Paula should look back on her own career, which for me ranks about the same as Milli Vanilli. She should just shut her big mouth, nobody really wants her opinion. Katharine's first album failure is due to the bonheads at Sony records. Most of the blame should fall on Clive Davis. She was given material that had no chance to succeed in today's pop market. We should all reserve judgement until we hear what Katharine and David Foster are producing. David is a perfectionist and if he believes that Katharine is a star, then lookout world Katharine will take the world be storm.
Yeah, I'm thinking (or hoping) that Paula was being charitable there and wasn't ripping Kat. I'd agree that Paula and/or the other 2 panelists need to go. I wish the show would bring in Mark Holden, who just left the Australian Idol judging panel but would be an improvement over Randy, Paula, and Simon. From what I've seen, he offers insightful analysis, and while he's not afraid to mix it up with the contestants, I don't feel he's gratuitous or unfair. As for the most surprising success, I'd go with Kellie Pickler or country boys Bucky and Phil, who all bombed in Idol but get decent play on the country airwaves.
This is an old article but...at first glance it's easy to get upset by that but when you think about it...all that means is that Paula thought Katharine would do better than she has so far. Didn't we all? Now that's purely based on album sales of course. We all know she's got a lot of other things going for her right now. Certainly a lot more than the guy that finished ahead of her in Season 5. Although he's doing better than anyone would give him credit for. Chris Daughtry and to a smaller extent, Kellie Pickler has made Taylor & Katharine's lesser successes (at least in music on Kat's part) look worse.
I'm not sure why they are so surprised about Chris. I always thought he'd be the most successful of that bunch when it came to record sales. Bucky is the one that's surprised me the most. For him to sell 300,000 records is stunning to me. But it's a testament to how many people by country records.
I don't think I would be slapping Randy on the back anytime soon either. If you watched the Larry King show the other night when all three (Randy, Paula and Simon) were on discussing AI, Larry King asked if America got it right about the winners of all the seasons. Randy said he thought America got it right each season when Simon interrupted and disagreed saying "what about season 5?" and Randy responded who won season 5. When Simon answered Taylor Hicks, Randy said "well, do you remember who the runner-up was?" My blood was starting to boil.
OK...here's how I recently vented! On Friday (04/11), on the last, new hour of the Today show with Hoda Kopi and Kathy Lee Gifford, they were discussing this very same subject...although it was because of the shocking elimination of Michael Johns (too bad, I liked him). I was waiting to see what would be said and sure enough, Kathy Lee said "and we haven't heard anything about Katharine McPhee".
Yes, Goody, my blood pressure went up considerably and I headed immediately to my keyboard to vent! I wrote to The Today Show and in particular, to Kathy Lee. I did my best to remember all of the things Katharine has done since her Idol days. I know I must have forgotten something, given the state I was in! But, I did fill her in on the House Bunny and of course, the album and appearances with David Foster. I even chided her a bit by saying "I don't have to tell you who David Foster is, do I?"
I also mentioned her Neutrogena and Big Sexy Hair endorsements and also McPhee Outreach.
I am not holding my breath for any kind of response from them, but as you say, venting is good!??!!
