I don't agree that Kat can't be a Pop star being herself. In fact, I think she will get a lot farther being herself than immitating Beyonce, or Christina, or any other established artist. She does an awfully good job sounding like other people, but she needs to be herself. Cllive Davis told her that she needed her own sound, but she didn't listen. At least I don't hear much of it on her CD. Don't get me wrong, I like her CD and her videos, but as someone said, she could sing the phone book and I would like it and buy it. However, I don't see her attracting many new fans unless she has a sound and style that are genuinely her own. She has a beautiful voice and I hope to hear much more of it in the future, but I want it to sound like Katharine McPhee, not someone else!

GB is exactly right. Pop is all about image.
Kat makes a very unconvincing 'bad girl'.
And 'good girls' appeal only to the Disney crowd.

Well Hillary Duff isn't doing that bad, and Christina and even Brittany had large fan bases before they went for a more sexy image, but I was thinking more like Kelley Clarkson who sounds like...Kelly Clarkson. I haven't followed her, but when I hear her voice I recognize her, I don't get her confused with Beyonce or Fergie or Avril or anyone else. I think up until her latest release, it has been a combination of great voice and good song choice. I think in the past she's had some help picking her songs, but it worked for her. I don't think she is categorized as a "bad girl". I think Kat, with a little help on song choice, could do just as good or better, but not by trying to be someone else. There are probably better examples than Kelly, but I just can't think of one now.

I don't think Kelly is quite the bad girl in the Fergie mode, but some of her biggest songs have been just bursting with give 'em hell attitude. And she can project that just fine. She doesn't get sleazy, but she can show a rough edge that feels believable. I just can't see that coming from Katharine. She's got a whole different vibe. She can push it beyond squeaky clean, but it will never be that come-and-get-me-if-youre-man-enough or who-needs-you tough gal thing. It's just different.

I just watched the Future Sex Love Show on HBO and Justin does the same thing. I have nothing but respect for his many talents. He's an incredible showman, gets the audience in the palm of his hand, and earns whatever they're paying him. He can sing, dance like he hasn't got a bone in his body, and play at least two instruments that I saw. But I think they love him for his in-your-face attitude. He drops f-bombs, flips the world the bird, drinks onstage (well, he said it was booze, who knows), bumps and grinds with female dancers, grabs his crotch more than Michael Jackson, and just generally acts like Mr. Bad Boy. And it works. For him. Because he does some of that offstage as well, and people know it.

And we want to take Miss I've Wanted To Be Pregnant All My Life, who stays with the same guy forever, says she's never done drugs, and actually wears underwear in public to do... what? Never work. Just my opinion.

Right, Kelly doesn't have that "bad girl" image and she is successful at Pop, which is what I was saying. I wouldn't want Kat to try to sound like her either, just to be herself rather than trying to fit in to someone else's mold. She needs her own style. She's got the voice. With the right songs, the right beat, she would be the bomb! I'm not saying it wouldn't take time and a full time effort on her part, but I really think it would work.

If I had to find an example right now to prove my point, I guess I would pick Elliott Yamin.  You can't tell me this guy is a "bad boy" with the sexy moves.  He has taken a nice voice and a quiet personality and peddled it to as many as three radio stations a day all summer long.  He has taken what he has and worked very hard at promoting himself as a singer and it seems to be paying off.  I don't really like his current music that much, but I have to admit that what he is doing is working.  Look at Mediabase 24/7 if you don't believe me...and he isn't immitating Justin Timberlake!  ...or anyone else that I am aware of.   He seems to be on his way to becoming a successful recording artist being himself and working hard at that objective.

Can you choose between whom you like.  I like each one for who they are.

I like Kat for who she is. She is the same wonderful and gifted Kat whether or not she's on Top 40, acting pregnant, singing "Love Story" or winning awards... The road to OZ with Kat in the past year has been bumpy,  never dull.  I sure enjoy being on this rollercoaster ride with Kat so far!!

We are definitely working together -- working on a record together. She sings so magnificently, it's just amazing -David Foster-

She's a wonderful, talented person, that's for sure. It's just that people were complaining that she wasn't on Z100, or any other radio station for that matter. I was just adding my 2 cents worth (I miss her great voice sometimes). It could be that her CD is just fine and she just didn't pick the right song for the single. I know "Over It" was tested before they released it and it sort of worked, there may be more that tested okay, or are potential hits and just weren't tested. Then again, maybe not being on the radio is Okay with Kat anyway. Maybe the CD was just a stepping stone to movies. Who knows what her dreams are anyway? I'll stop for now and go back to work and voting for TRL...is anyone else still doing that?
