Indie calls McPhee for feature bow

By Tatiana Siegel

June 5, 2007

"American Idol" runner-up Katharine McPhee is set to make her feature film debut as the star of the indie dark romantic comedy "The Last Caller."

Penned by Michael Albanese, the story is described as a coming-of-age tale about a self-obsessed woman (McPhee) who searches for love, hope and meaning during a few random events with other urban seekers.

"Caller" is produced by Hit and Run Prods.' Hilary Shor ("Children of Men") and Zenith Film Group's Nicholas Cokas. Robert Hawk ("Chasing Amy") will serve as associate producer. The film's budget will fall in the $5 million-$8 million range, and shooting is scheduled to start in the fall in and around New York.

"This is the first thing that I read that I really wanted to do," said McPhee, who added that the role doesn't involve singing. "I'm up for a couple of big studio projects, but they weren't starring roles. I wanted to start off doing something a little different. It's something that a lot of people wouldn't expect me doing."

In fact, the Southern California native said the film's protagonist "is definitely a little darker than me."

McPhee, who was edged out by Taylor Hicks as winner of the fifth season of "American Idol," made her self-titled album debut for RCA/19 Recordings, which landed at No. 2 on the Billboard chart. Her first single, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/My Destiny," debuted at No. 2 on Billboard's Hot Singles Sales chart.

She is repped by Untitled Entertainment and CAA.

Nellie Andreeva contributed to this report.

So... McCokas project.. Interesting!. How about the Adam Sandler Project then????

I hope she focuses soley on the album for atleast the next two single releases, so that she can get her album selling steady...but this is exciting!

I find it so funny how people are so easy to judge people they don't know, but think they have the right to scrutinize others because those "others" are celebrities. From Britney Spears to Katharine McPhee radio hosts and magazines will always make unfair statements and allegations. I am fans of both Britney and Katharine, two totally different artists, but I find that whether you are a icon or a promising newcomer from a hit reality show, the punches and jabs will come and never stop...but I have news for the haters, they won't stop either so you can take your opinions and give them to people that care, because the fans are like, SO over it.

Michael Albanese is a good friend and business partner to Nick (co-owner of Nick's indie film company)--and he also wrote that play Kat & Nick produced last year in NYC: 'Red Herring.' He seems to be a writer who creates some fascinating character studies, so this sounds like a good project.

All I can say is that Kat's smarter than smart to start off with an indie movie first. I just hope this news isn't a hoax, but I doubt it is--considering Kat's said she's looking for some movies to do. A lot of young actresses think getting into a major studio film is the best way to get noticed. Well, no, it really isn't turning out that way. Most of the best films being made today are indies. This one could truly propel Kat into the stratosphere as a major actress. These type of films with a strong central character get showered with major awards sometimes. That kind of trend is increasing. And if Kat gets a Golden Globe nomination next year...perhaps say so long to her singing career as a central thing that seems to be up in the air regarding its future recently.

You know, I think THIS may be why Kat's been speaking out against the creative differences on her debut album. She knows she's getting amazing offers like this that could put her in a place in show business where she wouldn't need to be shoved around in the type of album a studio wants her to make. Though Kat frequently says it isn't true that she loves acting more than singing...I still wonder if she'd rather be doing acting in the next few years rather than cranking out albums. Some here used to opine that Kat combining her singing career with moviemaking (meaning doing soundtrack albums and songs played in the film) would be the better career balance for her.

Outside of that--excuse me, Collette, asking one question about something I haven't heard: What Adam Sandler project?

I think a movie role with some publicity could help just a little bit more in getting her music noticed.

"I didn't see the crash that burnt the bridge, didn't see the missile that sank my loveship down..."--Kat McPhee, Dangerous

"Wanting you to be wanting me, no that ain't no way to be...You never were a friend of mine..."--Kat McPhee, Over It

I hope that this does not interfere with her singing and the 2nd album. I am happy for Katharine being such a fan, but wonder if she is making the right career move at this time of her career, and being that she was sought after by major film companies makes me wonder if the "Cokas influence" was the deciding factor?

Shooting will begin this Fall in NYC with a budget of around $8 million. I hope this doesn't kill a potential Christmas Album

I can't imagine that filming would take so long that it would interfere with other projects. This isn't Star Wars. And wouldn't it be nice if one of her songs could find its way onto the soundtrack, or over the end credits, or something? Only four are going to be radio singles, the rest have to find their fame however and wherever they can.

Great idea,Groucho!!Which song(s) would be most appropriate for a dark comedy??Guess it might depend on what kind of angst the protagonist(Kat) would be experiencing.... if the mood is somber, maybe the acoustic versions of Home and Love Story could fit the bill! The prospect of this film is just so exciting!!!

Wow! This is totally cool. I can't wait to see it.

I think an indie film is a good idea - if it's not successful it's not necessarily her fault, whereas there might be more pressure in a big studio film. I'm a little concerned about Nick being the producer, though. Although if I were her I'd love to work with my boyfriend, I just hope it isn't a cheesy home movie type thing. Although with a $5-$8 million budget it shouldn't be cheesy!!

I don't really think she's going to make a cheesy home movie.

Well, let's see, what have we got for background music. Since we know absolutely nothing about the plot, it would take some guesswork. If she was looking for love in all the wrong places, they could use either Open Toes or Do What You Do while she made the club scene, and then Neglected could play mournfully in the BG while she was suffering from unrequired love, and Not Ur Girl while she was joyfully regaining her composure and getting back on track again. Then if she ever find Mr. Right, there's always Each Other for the joyous ride off into the sunset arm in arm. I dunno, I'm just wingin' it here.

Katharine McPhee to make movie debut
BY: Actress Archives   |   Wednesday, June 6, 2007
ADVERTISEMENT
The runner-up to Taylor Hicks in the last American Idol, Katharine McPhee is going to try and make the same leap that earned Jennifer Hudson an Oscar, going from the world of music to the big screen in her first film, an independent romantic comedy called The Last Caller. Katharine McPhee has been saying ever since she was given the silver medal on the fifth edition of American Idol that she was as interested in being an actress as she was at being a singer. So will the debut for Katharine McPhee be closer to Dreamgirls (Jennifer Hudson's Oscar winner) or From Justin to Kelly (the best-forgotten film debut of Kelly Clarkson)? It will probably be somewhere in the middle. Katharine McPhee will play a self-obsessed woman searching for meaning and love in her life, according to E! Katharine McPhee told the press that the character is "definitely a little darker than me."

The Hollywood Reporter quoted Katharine McPhee as saying, "This is the first thing that I read that I really wanted to do. I'm up for a couple of big studio projects, but they weren't starring roles. I wanted to start off doing something a little different. It's something that a lot of people wouldn't expect me doing."

The Last Caller starring Katharine McPhee will be made for only around $5-$8 million and the shooting is scheduled to begin in New York this fall. This isn't the first appearance for Katharine McPhee, who guested on Ugly Betty this February and, in a sign of the times, showed up in a Webisode of lonelygirl15 on YouTube. There were even rumors that Katharine McPhee was in the running to play Wonder Woman in the long-awaited film adaptation of the legendary character. Katharine McPhee herself shot down those rumors, calling it a huge mistake to take a role that big right out of the career gate.

The debut CD by Katharine McPhee, which is self-titled, has sold 330,000 since it was released in February and McPhee is scheduled to sing at a Hillary Clinton fundraiser tonight.

As expected. Brilliant move. A music recording artist and a movie actress? Why not?

I really think Kat is ready to take on acting seriously. This was her lifelong dream. Music was her natural gift and she succeeded in laying down the foundation for her ultimate career. It's funny because I was talking to a group of teens yesterday and they told me about this news. They were ecstatic to hear about it. They think making albums and making movies could be done simultaneously for someone like Kat. I agree.

Personally, I'm happy for Kat's decision. She reminds me of James Caan back in the 70's. James Caan has a beautiful speaking voice, and he can sing, play the piano, dance and act. He made it big when he was cast with the Godfather and the rest is history. He never went back to music, I think, but he is one of the more recognizable TV and movie personalities to date from the 70's. He found his niche in acting and he made it his career. It only took a decision to make.

My advise to Kat:
In between making movies and recording albums, stay in New York. Take up drama and film making courses in New York University. Be prepared to be competitive with other actors who have also acquired directing and film making knowledge/skills as well. It would be some feat to try to beat Barbra Streisand. I'm sure Nick Cokas has sweeter dreams for you, though. Good luck, my dear!

Movie actors like Paul Newman, Jimmy Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall and Bette Davis make me want to live in the era they lived but I could have been just as inspired even now while I watch their work in films.

I don't think this will interfere with the music career.  Filming a movie like this will probably take 4-6 weeks I'd guess.  It doesn't sound like a film with lots of special effects so she'll be doing this in September & October.  That'll open her back up to do some of the Holiday Radio Shows in December.

And these other roles...if they are more minor roles in bigger movies we're talking about two weeks tops.  This stuff will hardly get in the way of the music.  And when it comes time to get serious about making the second album I'm sure she'll commit to that fully.  But I don't think that process will start until early 2008.  If I had to bet, I'd say her 2nd album is released in November 2008.

"I saw Katharine McPhee when there were about 12 contestants left on American Idol. She blew me away. I loved her grace, her style, her poise, her voice and her hair! I wanted her to be the face of Sexy Hair because she represented everything that I had in my head for the brand: youth, beauty, talent, class, a young sophistication, and sexiness." -- Jim Morrison, CEO of Sexy Hair Products.

I hope she does do the minor roles as well as this one. It almost sounded like she chose the indie role instead of the others. All exposure will be good for her. And the tiny roles will be fun to look back on when she's a huge star!

I like the prospect of November for the next release. Get that Christmas bump that Daughtry & Pickler got in sales!
