(Carrie sings)
We dreamers have our ways
Of facing rainy days
And somehow we survive
(Taylor sings)

We keep the feelings warm
Protect them from the storm
Until our time arrives
(Katharine sings)

Then one day the sun appears
And we come shining through those lonely years

I made it through the rain
I kept my world protected
(Taylor sings)
I made it through the rain
I kept my point of view
(Carrie sings)
I made it through the rain
And found myself respected
By the others who
Got rained on too
And made it through

(All sing)

I made it through the rain
I kept my world protected
I made it through the rain
I kept my point of view
I made it through the rain
And found myself respected
By the others who (by the others who)
Got rained on too
And made it through
And made it through the rain

(Next: The Top 2 Montage)

Katharine: Hi, I’m Katharine McPhee. (some shots of a younger Katharine appear on screen).
TaylorMy name is Taylor Hicks. (shots of a young Taylor follow)
Katharine (in the lobby outside the audition room in San Francisco): I really, really, really (sings the last really) want to go far in the competition (giggles).
Taylor: I’m excited to be here on American Idol.

Ryan (voiceover): It’s Katharine versus Taylor. She auditioned in San Francisco.

(clip from Katharine’s audition)

Simon: Katharine, how old are you?
Katharine: I’m 21.
Simon: You’re excited, aren’t you?
Katharine: I’m very excited!

Ryan (voiceover): He took a gamble and came to Vegas.

(clip from Taylor’s audition)

Simon: Why are you here?
Taylor: I want my voice heard.
Simon: Why?
Taylor: Because I feel like I got one.

Ryan (voiceover): Taylor Hicks comes from a state that prides itself on breeding superstars. But things didn’t come so easy in his first audition.

(clip from Taylor’s audition)

Simon: They will not put you in the final group to be judged by the public.
Paula: We won’t know that until we see how you do.
Simon: I know it now.
Paula: But I say yes.
Randy: And I say yes.
Paula: Yes, you’re going to Hollywood!
Taylor: Wooooo!

Ryan (voiceover): Now he’s defied the odds.
Taylor (to camera): I was just a guy playing music in a bar.
Ryan (voiceover): This silver fox has won over a nation with his soulful spirit and contagious dance moves.
Taylor (to camera): This is the American dream by Taylor Hicks.

(clip from earlier episode)

Simon: I said in the beginning, if you remember, that I didn’t think you should make the finals of this competition. I was wrong.
Taylor: Wooo!

(clip from earlier episode)

Paula: The Soul Patrol is probably on fire tonight.
Taylor: Yay!

Ryan (voiceover): But meanwhile, McPheever was rising.

(clip of Peisha and Katharine in San Francisco)

Peisha: You’re going to have so much fun.
Katharine: (giggles)

Ryan (voiceover): She’s Katharine McPhee, the California girl who won over the judges during her first audition.

(clip from Katharine’s audition)

Randy: Best voice I’ve heard so far this auditioning season.
Simon: You are sailing through the Hollywood, young lady.
Randy: Welcome to Hollywood, Katharine! Yeah!
Katharine: Woooo!

Katharine (to camera): I always dreamed that, you know, I would be on a stage like this and be able to perform in front of millions of people.

(clip from Katharine’s “Come Rain or Come Shine” performance)

Simon: Tonight, you turned into a star.
Paula: There’s something about your voice that just pierces through the heart.

Ryan (voiceover): Week after week, she’s proven to America that she has the chops. So it’s girl versus boy. The West versus the South. McPheever versus the Soul Patrol. It is up to you, which one will be your next American Idol?

(Next: Katharine & Meat Loaf’s performance of “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now”)

(Meat Loaf sings)

There were nights when the wind was so cold
That my body froze in bed if I just listened to it right outside the window

(Katharine sings)

There were days when the sun was so cruel
That all the tears turned to dust and I just knew my eyes were drying up forever

(Katharine and Meat Loaf sing)

I finished crying in the instant that you left
And I can't remember where or when or how
And I banished every memory you and I have ever made

Baby, baby, baby…

(Meatloaf sings…Katharine parts in parenthesis)

When you touch me like this (touch me like this)
And when you hold me like that (hold me like that)
It was gone with the wind but it's all coming back to me

When I see you like this (see you like this)
And when I see you like that (see you like that)

(Katharine and Meat Loaf sing)

Then we see what we want to see
All coming back to me

The flesh and the fantasies
All coming back to me
I can barely recall
But it's all coming back to me now....

(Meatloaf sings…Katharine’s parts in parenthesis)

If I forgive you all this (forgive me all this)
If I forgive you all that (forgive you all that)

(Katharine and Meat Loaf sing)

We forgive and forget and it's all coming back to me now

(Katharine sings)

It's all coming back to me now

(Meat Loaf sings)

If we forgive and forget

(Katharine & Meat Loaf sing)

And it's all comïng back to me now

(Next: Katharine performs with the other five female Idols in a Girls Medley)

(First song: “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!”)

(Katharine sings)

Let’s go, girls!

I'm going out tonight
I'm feelin' alright
Gonna let it all hang out
Wanna make some noise
Really raise my voice
Yeah, I wanna scream and shout

(All sing)

The best thing about being a woman
Is the prerogative to have a little fun and...

Oh, oh, oh, go totally crazy
Forget I'm a lady
Men's shirts, short skirts
Oh, oh, oh, really go wild
Yeah, doin' it in style
Oh, oh, oh, get in the action
Feel the attraction
Color my hair
Do what I dare
Oh, oh, oh, I wanna be free
Yeah, to feel the way I feel

(Katharine sings)

Man! I feel like a woman!

(Next song: “Trouble”)

(Paris sings)

If you're looking for trouble
You came to the right place

(Lisa sings)

If you're looking for trouble
Just look right in my face

(Paris sings)

I was born standing up

(Lisa sings)

And talking back

(Paris and Lisa sing)

My daddy was a green-eyed mountain jack

(Katharine sings)

Because I'm evil, my middle name is misery
Oh yeah, because I’m evil, don’t you mess around with me

(Next song: “I’m A Woman”)

(Melissa sings)

I can stretch a greenback dollar bill from here to kingdom come

(Kellie sings)

I can play the numbers pay my bills and still end up with some

(Mandisa sings)

I got a twenty dollar gold piece
Says there's ain't nothin' I can't do

(Melissa, Kellie and Mandisa sing)

I can make a dress out of a feed bag,
Make a man out of you.

'Cause I'm a woman...W-O-M-A-N.
I'll say it again
'Cause I'm a woman...W-O-M-A-N.

(Next song: “Natural Woman”)

(Katharine sings)

Looking out on the morning rain
I used to feel uninspired

(Lisa sings)

And when I knew I had to face another day
Lord, it made me feel so tired

(Paris sings)

Before the day I met you, life was so unkind
But your the key to peace my mind

(Katharine, Lisa and Paris sing)

Cause you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel like
A natural woman
Woman

(Next song: “I’m Every Woman”)

(All sing)

I’m every woman
It’s all in me
Anything you want done baby
I do it naturally

(Mandisa sings)

I can cast a spell
Of secrets you can tell
Mix a special brew
Put fire inside of you
But anytime you feel joy or fear
Instantly, I will appear ‘cause

(All sing)

I’m every woman
Every woman, baby

I’m every woman
I’m every woman
Every woman

I’m every woman
You can believe
I’m every woman

(Ryan informs Katharine and Taylor that they are both receiving Ford Mustangs)

Ryan: Welcome back. Katharine and Taylor. Who’s it going to be? Soon we will know. (Lots of cheering from the crowd)

(This part is after the Ford commercial where Katharine was driving)

Ryan: Now that must have been fun driving that convertible Mustang. It is a nice car.
Katharine: It is a nice car. We had a fun time.
Taylor: Yeah.
Ryan: You should probably have one, Kat.
Taylor: Ohhhhhhhhhh!
Katharine: Wooooo! (holds up keys for everyone to see) Alright!
Ryan: Taylor, why don’t you have one, too.
Taylor: Woooooo! (Katharine & Taylor do a little dance with their car keys)
Ryan: Let me show you. Two Ford Mustang convertibles waiting for you outside. Let me show you your brand new cars.
Katharine and Taylor: Woooooooo!
Ryan: Congratulations.
Taylor: Thank you. (Katharine hugs him)
Ryan: Alright, Taylor or Katharine? That’s the big question. Who has made it? One thing is for sure, whether they win or not, they’ve made a lot of people very, very proud and with that in mind it’s time for another category in the Golden Idols. Proudest family moment.  Here are the nominees! (End of relevance to Katharine)

(Next performance: All of the Idols with Burt Bacharach and Dionne Warwick)

(“What The World Needs Now Is Love”)

(Taylor sings)

What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It's the only thing that there's just too little of

(Katharine sings)

What the world needs now is love, sweet love,
No not just for some but for everyone.

(We skip to the end of the Bacharach tribute, Katharine isn’t in it again until then)

(“That’s What Friends Are For” with Dionne Warwick)

(Everyone sings)

Keep smiling, keep shining,
Knowing you can always count on me
For sure
That's what friends are for

For good times and bad times
I'll be on your side forever more.
That's what friends are for

(The final singing performance of Katharine’s time on Idol, a duet of “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” with Taylor)

(Taylor sings)

Now I've had the time of my life
No I never felt like this before
Yes I swear, it's the truth
And I owe it all to you

(Katharine sings)

'Cause I've had the time of my life
And I owe it all to you

(Taylor sings)

I've been waiting for so long
Now I've finally found someone
To stand by me

(Katharine sings)

We saw the writing on the wall
As we felt this magical fantasy

(Taylor sings)

Just remember

(Katharine sings)

You're the one thing

(Taylor sings)

I can't get enough of

(Katharine sings)

So I'll tell you something

(Katharine and Taylor sing)

This could be love because
I've had the time of my life
No I never felt this way before
Yes I swear it's the truth
And I owe it all to you

(Taylor sings)

Hey, baby

Now I…

(Katharine sings)

I’ve had

(Taylor sings)

The time of my life
No I never felt this way before

(Katharine sings)

Never felt this way

(Taylor sings)

Yes I swear, it’s the truth

(Katharine and Taylor sing)

And I owe it all to you

'Cause I had the time of my life
No I've never felt this way before
Yes I swear it's the truth
And I owe it all to you

RESULTS

(Ryan enters stage as “Time of My Life” ends)

Ryan: Katharine and Taylor. And they’ve no doubt had the time of their lives. But now, America and the world it is the moment of truth.

(Ryan looks at Katharine and Taylor. Katharine appears resigned to the fact that Taylor is going to win. Taylor still looks a bit nervous)

Ryan: Here we go. Let me just tell you that the amount of votes last night was astounding. An incredible 63.4 million came in. That’s more than any president…
Katharine: Wow!
Ryan: In the history of our country has ever received. But who has won?
Voice from the crowd: Taylor!
Another voice in the crowd: Katharine!

(Rest of the crowd cheers)

Ryan: I’d like to introduce Edward Boddington, the chairman of Telescope Incorporated, the independent company that certified the results of the world’s largest voting system.

(Edward comes on stage and shakes Ryan’s hand)

Ryan: Edward, thank you for being here.
Edward: Thank you, Ryan.
Ryan: So you’ve got something that we all need, right?
Edward: Yep, I’d like…
Ryan: How’d the voting go?
Edward: It went very well, Ryan. And I’d like to confirm that Telescope has counted and validated the voting results for this season’s American Idol. The results of which are inside this envelope. OK?
Ryan: Thank you very much, sir.

(Ryan turns to Katharine and Taylor. They are holding hands. Katharine’s left hand with Taylor’s right hand)

Ryan: Good luck, guys.
Katharine: Thank you.
Taylor: (nods his head)

(Ryan pauses to let the crowd cheer)

Ryan: Here we go. The winner of American Idol, season five is….Taylor Hicks!
Taylor: Wooo!

(Katharine and Taylor hug for about five seconds. I think Taylor says something because Katharine giggles.)

Ryan: Congratulations!

(Shots of the crowd, shots of Birmingham, celebration abounds for Taylor. In the middle of this Taylor does a classy thing. He raises Katharine’s left arm up and points at her, urging the crowd to cheer for her. She seems genuinely happy about the result.)

Ryan: We have done it. We have found another American Idol. Congratulations to both of you.
Katharine: Thank you. (she hugs Ryan)
Ryan: Taylor, what would you like to say to your fans?
Taylor: SOUL PATROL!!!! Soul Patrol!
Ryan: And Katharine, yours?
Katharine: Thank you so much. This is a dream come true. I’m so so thrilled to be here.
Ryan: We have to thank our friends, our judges…Randy, Paula and Simon.
Randy: Congratulations, congratulations.
Taylor: Thank you.
Katharine: Thank you.
Ryan: Thanks to all the artists on this stage tonight. Thank you for making this the biggest season ever.
Katharine (exhale): Woooo!
Taylor: Woooo!
Ryan: And we will do it again. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome your American Idol, Taylor Hicks.

(Taylor sings “Do I Make You Proud”, confetti falls, bright lights, sparklers. And American Idol, season five ends)

Katharine owned this night.  She sang amazingly well, she looked gorgeous and she handled Taylor's win about as classy as anyone could.  I don't think anybody watching this episode would think that Katharine wasn't a star in the making.  She so outshone the rest of the girls when they sang together...it looked like the Pussycat Dolls look (go with me).  How the lead singer is clearly the star and the rest are just along for the ride.

Anyway...so our journey comes to an end.  At least the Idol journey.  Hahahah...are we going to do this with the Idol Tour?  Let's relive the nightmare that was....SHE'S SUCH A DIVA....SHE THINKS SHE'S BETTER THAN IDOL....SHE'S MAKING A MOVIE!  SHE ISN'T REALLY SICK, SHE MAKING OUT WITH HER BOYFRIEND IN THE POOL!

Sorry!

Once again I agree, but do we have to relive "The Nightmare"? :fear::haha:  Yes, Katharine was brilliant that night.  Although I just recenlty watched the Meatloaf duet, and after all that has been revealed since then it seemed a bit awkward.  Kat was great, and I love how she kinda acted out the song broadway style, but I kept thinking about what was going through Meatloaf's head the whole time, 'Dammit girl quit working the camera and look at me.'   Then of course you start picturing her doing the Meatloaf impression.  She rocked it in the group perfs, over-shadowed the winner in their duet, and was gracious in defeat.  I still wonder what happened to the Mustang though.

This was actually the first time we got to see the REAL Kat, performing without the pressure of the competition. And her star shone brightly that night, lighting up the Kodak Theater even though her vocal cords were so injured that she couldn't sing without cortisone.

Look at what she's wearing!  Nothing super flashy or anything.  And she looks as beautiful as ever wearing something simple like that.  Is that the hair Haley wore?  I think so!

Just imagine Kat in an alternate universe during that 'It's All Coming Back to Me Now' performance: Kat looks Meatloaf straight in the eye, starts breaking out laughing on live television...subsequently creating one of the Top Ten memorable TV moments in history.

Well, from what Kat described in interviews over the last six months--she was just one glance away from that happening. Now we know why she kept looking to at the camera and the audience. But, I argue that her doing that is her own performing style anyway. She developed a real rapport with the camera and truly connecting with people watching at home. She brought back a lost art form of reaching out through the TV screen when performing.

I guess most people cite this as the real highlight of Finale night. Though those group numbers are just as memorable in my mind. The Bacharach medley was a favorite at the time--despite Dionne Warwick having her own vocal faux pas at one point while standing next to Kat. It was fun to see her hang out (on stage) with Burt and Dionne though. The threads connecting her to famous musical legends some of us experienced in childhood is a real thrill to see.

Yes, I remember when those two Ford cars were put up on the screen--some of my family immediately blurted: "Kat will choose the red one!" Yep, she sure did. I'm glad she didn't just capitulate to the Ford company and decide to keep it either. I think she said she traded it in later for her BMW if I remember correctly.

Thanks again to William and Joe for making us put these performances in better perspective a year later. Seeing Joe's transcripts help put things in perspective too--especially realizing how incoherent the judges look when reading their fragmented sentences.

At this time last year, a lot of us on the 'AI' board didn't know where we'd go or what would come next. I guess we're sort of dealing with that now on KMF what with 'AI' ending for the season and these throwback threads coming to a close. Sure, we should analyze next what happened Kat post-'AI' and into last summer. That was just as wild as what happened during the 'AI' months. That period was also the golden age of KMF, too, when many of us arrived here.

Edit: I just realized in that picture Joe posted above that Kat's pretending to start her car with her left hand. Now you know why McLefties are said to get into more accidents.

Taylor and Kat really have a good chemistry together, although that moment near the end of "Time of My Life" when they clasped hands looked unintentionally ... "erotic", especially with Taylor's bizarre facial expressions.

Supposedly Taylor and Katharine had practiced "the lift" ( I haven't seen DD so I haven't the foggiest what any of this means)  from Dirty Dancing for that part of the song and Prince's late arrival caused them to be in the wrong wardrobe (she ended up in a Bar-El gown)  to pull the lift off so we ended up with that weird hand thing.  Kat has talked about this although  I can't site a source.

Katharine's performance on this show doesn't need any more hype.  Katharine McPhee clearly was the star of the show and every time she stepped on the stage that night you really could see that.   I think the stress of the competition was a big part of her voice problems.
