Yep.  With so much time and money invested by the record company it is virtually unheard of to have a first time artist have much imput, if any, with much of ANYTHING.  I know it has been reported that she chose different songs and the sound of the CD in the process of recording it, but I think it's all bunk.  She didn't do anything.  The people at the record company were the ones that made those choices, but it makes better press to say that Katharine made those decisions.  To the novice fan, it sounds like that was the type of record she wanted to make, but in reality, it was the type of record the exec's wanted her to make; because the potential for huge, quick profits.

Do I sound too jaded?  Yeah, probably a little.  But, I just thought I would set the record straight for anyone out there that thinks that Kat has creative control or anything, which I can almost guarantee she does not.  Once she has proven herself in the marketplace, then step by step they will start letting her make some of the creative decisions.

I have been participating in this thread so hopefully somebody in her camp that has some clout will see this discussion and maybe keep the door open for something other than 'pop' music for her.

If you saw interviews with Kat back at the very beginning of 'AI'--she said then she wanted to make an R&B/Jazz/Soul type of album. At the time, she compared the sounds she wanted to do to maybe Alicia Keys or Joss Stone. But a lot of people don't remember that interview...considering it was done I think during Top 24 week. I remember watching it on the 'AI' board in March of last year when it'd been up for already a month or more.

Despite her saying that at the time--I agree that there was a slight shift from that sound to one that's just a tad bit more urban. I think Kat's more in line of wanting to do Jazzy Soul type of singing that obviously wouldn't be considered "marketable" by the head brass at RCA. Nevertheless, in that press kit DVD we all saw, Kat explained that it ultimately was her decision to make an album that people in her age group would listen to. Maybe that was just a euphemism for saying that Clive and RCA demanded she do a Urban-flavored Pop album. Now all of that's been whittled down to a "Rhythmic Pop" album, which seems to be a way of coming somewhere in the middle of what she wanted to do and what RCA wanted.

But going beyond what Kat wanted to really do--I have to concur with those that say that Pop isn't the ONLY route one has to go in order to ensure a successful music career. I used to forward this line of thought back on the 'AI' board. There's been a huge development of late with artists who sing older material--and are becoming huge sellers on not only AC charts--but also the mainstream charts. The best example may be Michael Buble. The guy has the #2 album in the country on the Top 200 right now (or did last week). What does he sing? Great old material (mostly standards) that he reinvents to a modern sensibility. At one time, some people thought that this kind of thing was cheesy. Though given someone with a great artistic ability and great voice...it can be an amazing experience. Kat's doing this now with her recent performances of 'Me' and 'Mary Jane' among other things.

So, in the off-chance Kat does want to hook up with David Foster on an album--that's the route she should or would go. Most of David's artist roster are becoming classic performers who have albums that will likely still be played fifty years from now. That includes Josh Groban, Buble, Renee Olstead, et al. While still controversial--Kat probably belongs there (among a lot of places).

The only problem with Kat going that direction in the immediate term is she likely won't be able to turn back. I get the feeling she'll try one more "Rhythmic Pop" album with a different producer (e.g. Babyface). A Kat/Babyface R&B/Pop album might be enough to keep her in the genre where she feels she truly wants to be. You'd hate to see her do the standards route when she's bored to tears with doing that. At least the Rhythmic Pop sounds seem to inspire her.

Kat obviously has some serious decisions to make in the next year or two where she wants to go in her music career. I wish there were room to carve out both sounds above. That's not usually allowed in today's music world, unfortunately. And I think that Kat/Babyface collab is likely...considering they had good rapport in the studio for 'EIG.' I just hope he can grow to appreciate air-conditioning in the studio, though, rather than candles and heat.

I haven't read the entire discussion in this thread, but I think everyone has some good points as to answering the OP's question is concerned. I sure hope Kat reads this, she might find there maybe some better people here that she could consider to work for her; I'm not kidding, I love to see how insightful we all are in terms of the activity of her career.

Okay, back to the question. Why isn't she selling better? For me, it's all about the people who makes things happen for her. They throw Kat into every launch, magazine cover shoots, TV spots, guest appearances and what not. They say the exposure is good for her album, but when I see it now, it only hurts her more than it helps. I hope they try to schedule more tour dates for her, so that she CAN ACTUALLY SING tracks off her CD. Look at Daughtry and Taylor, Bucky even, they are out on the road, exposing their music to new people everyday who could be potential buyers of the CD. The buyers are the ones who go to the concerts, not only those people who sit at home watching their small little (or big, wall mounted ones) boxes called a television. I heard she is doing a radio tour (?), which is good, but she really needs to go out there and TOUR. Like they say, slow and steady wins the race, and touring will help her do this.

Alright, that's all for me, sorry if any of that didn't make any sense at all.

ALL YOU HATERS AND BASHERS, TAKE HEED!!!

OT (sorta):  What happened to this thread?  Weren't we on page 6 just a minute ago?

Something strange is going on. The vinman media sticky went from 5 pages to 4, so my posts there saying "bottom of page 4" are now... well, just bald faced lies.

I increased the topics/page & posts/page from 20 to 30 as requested by some members, so now there are less pages in each existing topic..

Aha!  Well that explains it.  Thanks, Bill.
