The last part of this week's edition of Katharine's "American Idol" journey, is the song, "Ain't Nothing But THe Blues".

What do you think of the performance?

When I think about this one, I think about the judges comments. Not because i don't think it was good, because I think it was great, and this performance is completely understimated. But because, i mean, i could've smack Randy "how can you compare yourself to Ella"???? (and right before the preformance she said "I chose this song because I don't want to be compared to anyone"). I was like omg they're such fools!

Stop me if you've heard this before, but I JUST LOVED THIS ONE! It wasn't a perfect performance
but it had pizzazz and was a perfect counterpoint to the other numbers, and it might take two or three
of us to be big enough to smack Randy, but I'd like to help. I guess Kellie must have left her boots
behind. Glad to see they didn't go to waste.

The only problem with this performance was that it followed SOTR. And nothing could have followed SOTR that night. They should have just cancelled her last song. As a matter of fact, they sould have just cancelled EVERYONE'S last song and gone to a test pattern, because it was criminal to make anyone else even try to sing after Kat blew the roof off!

I was glad Kat decided to go with a jazz tune to showcase her diversity rather than the more Countrified 'I Feel Like a Woman.' It's never been 100% confirmed, but that's what Kat apparently announced the week before at her homecoming rally at NDHS.  Based on what we heard, Kat was apparently waiting for 'AGNbtB' to get a clearance for copyright reasons. It was written by Duke Ellington (probably the first time an Ellington tune has ever been covered on 'AI')--and his estate probably protect his songs under lock and key. When they heard Kat was going to sing it, they obviously gave her the go-ahead. Reports were, though, that Kat was trying to get it cleared much earlier for standards night. You know how legal red tape works though.

Funny how that curved catwalk is almost always used for more jazzy numbers for whatever reason. I'm sure the horn players don't mind...based on their expressions seeing Kat walk right by them at eye level. That was one sexy outfit she wore for this...and Kat got right into the spirit of the song from the first note.

A lot of people on the 'AI' board that night complained openly about Randy comparing Kat to Ella Fitzgerald. In my mind, Kat bested Ella's version in vocal purity. Sure, it was a little more forceful (Ella's is slower, bluesier, and longer), but it was the best of the best in showcasing Kat's quality of voice and ability to cover jazz. Some people kept insisting she tried out a little scatting there on the "B-b-b-lues" line. Actually, that's not really scatting but just more George Thoroughgood territory. If you've heard that classic rock song 'Bad to the Bone'--you'd know what I'm talking about. Nevertheless, it was still a jazz vocal device that was fun to see Kat throw in.

It's weird how mixed of a reaction this Kat performance gets. It's usually ranked in my Top Five 'AI' performances from her (usually #5). It was one genre she needed to prove she could do (the only other being Rock that she avoided)...and she nailed it brilliantly. I agree, though, that maybe this should have come before 'SOTR'--despite it being impossible because of the formatting of the show. People watching at home, however, realized what an amazing artist she was on this night. A lot of people on the board joked that Kat got the "blue hairs" out voting this night in droves. Maybe so, but I think a lot of younger people desiring to have hair like Marge Simpson were carpal voting for weeks already.

Simon didn't mean it literally. He just wished abstractly that she could have done her best song last. The
show was set up like it was set up, nothing she could do. What could she follow that with? Nothing. But
at least he could have given her credit for originality, and for showing that she could not only do
powerhouse sexy (yellow dress night) but also saucy/jazzy/cute sexy. Did anyone else do a song even
remotely like it that season? And it's a good thing she didn't get to do it earlier (standards night).
Woudlnt' that have wiped out STWOM? Wouldn't have wanted that.

Smack them all,I say! They were delusional and their"judgements"really seem pre-determined as per their real agenda! In a little over a minute,Kat brilliantly, jazzily nailed this number, pulling out all the stops starting with her owning the stage, tossing in the falsettos and scats. As with IHN,Kat was not trying to be anybody but herself...she was just interpreting a song.Aren't the majority of the songs done on AI covers;originally done by another singer??Hello, duh, Randy! With season 6,I am growing quite weary of the trite and redundant critiques regurgitated by these three!!And now we have Simon,in his weekly unimaginative T shirt, striving to be a member of the fashion police....daring to give a negative review to Jordin's stunning Dina Bar-El gown. What a fool!

I have one HUGE problem with this performance, and that is it's only 1:15 long.   We were robbed!   I mentioned in the "Part I" thread that IBICF was one of the most underrated performances of the season.  Well IMO IAGNBTB was the most underrated performance of the season.  I guess it didn't matter what she did before and after SOTR.  Those other two performances were never going to be anything other than nice bookends to the greatness that was Katharine's defining moment on AI.

This performance got lost behind SOTR...it's a shame she didn't kick the show off with this, put IBICF in the middle and close with SOTR.  Because this song & that outfit deserve more attention!  And those boots!  This outfit isn't that far from the album cover!  Well, the dress/sweater is longer but still....

And yeah it was terrible that this was sooooo short.

KATHARINE’S TOP 3 PERFORMANCE #3 (KATHARINE’S PICK)

Song: “I Ain’t Got Nothin’ But The Blues”
Performed: May 16, 2006

Original Performer:  Duke Ellington
Katharine’s Adaptation: Ella Fitzgerald
Written By: Duke Ellington and Don George
Year:  1943 (Fitzgerald, 1958)

PRE-PERFORMANCE

Ryan: I’m headed over here to the young lady that uh is from Sherman Oaks who’s caused an epidemic.
Katharine: I have.
Ryan: McPheever is everywhere! So Katharine, what have you chosen and why tonight?
Katharine: I’m singing “I Ain’t Got Nothin’ But The Blues”. Uh, it’s another one of the older songs but I didn’t want to be compared to anybody who’s in the, you know, in the industry today so…and I love the song and I just have fun doing it.
Ryan: The final song of the night (cues Katharine to take her place) you get set.
Katharine: Oh, OK. (she hurriedly leaves camera view).
Ryan: Let’s get into it, ladies and gentlemen. Can she make it to the finale next week? Ladies and gentlemen, one more time on the stage with “I Ain’t Got Nothin’ But The Blues” it is Katharine McPhee.

KATHARINE’S LYRICS

Ain't got no change but a nickel
Ain't got no bounce in my shoes
Ain't go no fancy to tickle
I ain't got nothin’ but the blue, blue, blues

Oh, when trumpets flare up
I keep my hair up
I just can't make my hair come down
Believe me pappy
Can't get happy
Since my ever lovin’ baby left town

Ain’t got the change of a nickel
Ain't got no feelings to bruise
Ain't got no telephone numbers
I ain't got nothin’ but the blues

Oh yeah

POST-PERFORMANCE

Randy: Yo, alright so look. Still, still I mean the last song was really my one for you. This was OK, you know I understand what you’re trying to do.
Katharine: (half rolls her eyes)
Randy: But you know, you’re kind of comparing yourself to Ella still its those kind of greats…I, I don’t know. Paula?
Paula: Well.
Katharine: OK.
Paula: Your magic was “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”, that’s your element my dear, it really is.
Randy: Umm, umm, umm (gives a thumbs up over “SOTR” comment).
Paula: But you know what? You still did a great job.
Katharine (little confused over judge apathy): OK.
Simon: Uh, you know overall you’ve had a good night tonight, Katharine. That was you know you go five steps forward, one step back with that. You know it’s um, it was I just wish we could have reversed the order and let you end it up on the songs from the middle round because that’s what I want to remember, with all of you actually funny enough tonight. It was OK, Katharine.
Katharine: OK.
Simon: It was OK.

Ryan: A lot of ground to cover with three songs for each of you in show. The numbers one more time for Katharine. 1-866-IDOLS-02 or 05 or 08. It’s 1-866-436-5702 or 05 or 08. Or text the word vote to 5702. Thank you, Katharine.
Katharine: Thank you!

"I saw Katharine McPhee when there were about 12 contestants left on American Idol. She blew me away. I loved her grace, her style, her poise, her voice and her hair! I wanted her to be the face of Sexy Hair because she represented everything that I had in my head for the brand: youth, beauty, talent, class, a young sophistication, and sexiness." -- Jim Morrison, CEO of Sexy Hair Products.

HOW KATHARINE FOUND OUT HER FATE

(Ryan opens the show with the three remaining Idols)

Ryan: This is it. Taylor Hicks, Katharine McPhee (she exhales) and Elliott Yamin. You put them on this stage, but who will you send to the finale at the Kodak. The results are in…someone is out. Let’s go, this is American Idol. (Katharine does a little nod of her head, looking like she’s psyching herself up for the show).

(The Homecoming segments)

Ryan: Well all the contestants got a chance to head back home for a few short hours this week. Now Katharine, you went, uh, like 10 minutes from our studio here.
Katharine: (laughs) Yeah.
Ryan: How was your trip home to Hollywood?
Katharine: Oh, very long, very boring. No, um, yeah, it was just over the hill. It was, it was cool.
Ryan: That’s what we say, just over this little mountain, over the hill.
Katharine: Yeah (laughs).
Ryan: Well take a look, we have the tape. Sherman Oaks, California.

(Katharine’s clip)

Katharine (to camera): Hey everyone. Good morning, it is 6:30 AM and I am on my way to my first stop at Good Day L.A. so I’m really excited. So come with me and we’re going to get in my, my big stretch limousine. I’m really excited.

(she gets in the limo)

Katharine (to camera): Oh Hi, how ya doin?

(Limo heads for Good Day L.A., Katharine talks about being a native L.A. girl)

Katharine: There are few people who are actually born and raised in L.A. I don’t get the small town support but I definitely have gotten an overwhelming support from the actual city that I’m from.

(At Good Day L.A. with hosts Jillian Barberie, Steve Edwards and Dorothy Lucey)

Jillian: This is your homecoming!
Katharine: It is so good to be here! I watch you guys, like, every morning!
Steve: Have a seat, Katharine.
Katharine: Hi. (she hugs Dorothy)

(then we see a clip from the actual broadcast)

Steve: You could do this show, after that.
Jillian: She’s perfect.
Katharine: Really? (does a little excited dance in her seat)
Steve: Oh, absolutely.

(As she’s leaving Good Day L.A. and entering her limo)

Katharine: Now we are going to dash over to my favorite radio station and uh, do a little radio session with them.

(In the limo)

Katharine: I’ve always wanted to be on the radio station, just sitting in the chair with the little headphones on, talking into the microphone.

(She’s in the KROQ studios now)

Kevin Ryder: It’s the world famous KROQ, 106.7 KROQ. It’s the Kevin and Bean show and we have our hometown girl from Sherman Oaks, California. Katharine McPhee is here.
Katharine: Yay, I’m so happy to be here! Thank you.

(Now she’s doing an interview at KIIS-FM with JoJo Wright)

JoJo: I’ve got some McPheever.
Katharine: Hello!
JoJo: Katharine McPhee is here on KIIS-FM! Yes, thank you.

(Katharine’s helicopter ride)

Katharine: I’m so excited! I’m going to fly away! (she spins around in a circle a few times).

(While flying in the helicopter)

Katharine (as they take off): Awwwwwwww! (laughs)
Katharine: Oh my gosh. Look at the reflection! (you can see the helicopter’s reflection in the window’s of a high-rise building) This is my hometown! Hollywood, California! And we’re approaching it (the Hollywood sign), up close and personal. How many people get to do this in their lifetime?

Pilot: In about two minutes, ok? (they’ll be landing)

(Shot of Notre Dame High School from the helicopter)

Katharine: There’s my high school in the background.

(At the high school)

All the students (chanting): Katharine! Katharine! Katharine!

(She comes out to the gymnasium floor. Hugs some students then dances in the middle of the floor to everyone’s delight. We see many signs. “McPhee is our McPhavorite” “Will You Marry Me?” “We’ve Got The McPheever”)

Cheerleaders (using their pompoms to spell out the letters): V-O-T-E, Vote 4 Kat!

Principal Stephanie Connelly: The mayor of Los Angeles.
Katharine: Wow.
Principal Connelly: Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
Mayor Villaraigosa: I’d like to drop by to proclaim this day, Katharine McPhee Day in the city of Los Angeles.
Katharine: (overwhelmed, laughs)

Male Student: Do you wanna hear her sing? (The students go crazy)

(Katharine sings a little bit of “God Bless The Child”)

Them that’s got shall get…
Money, you’ve got lots of friends…

(She’s goes into the crowd of students, body guard follows her. Hugs all around)

(As she departs the gym)

Student: Katharine, you rock!
Katharine: Thank you!

(She’s outside now, hugs a few more students…)

Katharine: Nice to see you guys.
Male Student: McPhee! Yes! (she hugs him)

(Back in the limo, now we’re heading for the McPhee house)

Katharine (to camera in car): We just left my high school um, it’s getting a little bit later. And now we’re heading just a few blocks down the way to my parents’ house.

(We see Katharine running up the long driveway into the McPhee house. We see all her friends and family holding up a sign that says “Sherman Oaks has the McPheever!”)

Katharine: Hi, guys! (Hugs all around…she hugs Peisha, she hugs Nick)

(We move to the backyard area to see Katharine’s dog, Lily)

Katharine: Oooh, Mommy missed you! Oh (she kisses Lily). This is Lily, everyone.

(Inside the house, we see a sign that says “Katharine! Welcome to the Top 3!!!”)

(Back outside, we get to meet Katharine’s just born Goddaughter, Charlotte)

Katharine (in a somewhat baby voice as she holds the baby): Oh yes, this is my Goddaughter!

(Back in the limo)

Katharine (to camera): I just became a Godmother eight days ago and I got to see her. It was really exciting to see familiar faces, um, I was so excited today.

(Back to the house, as she’s leaving)

Katharine: Bye Dad. (Hugs him)
Dan: I love you.

(End Clip)

Ryan: Katharine McPhee, home here in Los Angeles. You’re from a town that’s used to seeing celebrities. Were you surprised all those people showed up?
Katharine: Yeah, I mean it was great. I was just so glad to just, be able to be in the top three and get to meet fans that we don’t actually get to see all the time. And even though I didn’t have like a greeting of like thousands, I still felt the support and it was, it was fantastic.
Ryan: You have a lot of family. How important have they been throughout all of this?
Katharine: Um, they’ve been, they’ve been awesome. I really, to be honest, I don’t even talk to them that much. (laughs) I don’t even call them!
Ryan: Well I think they’re here so you should say Hi to them.
Katharine: Hi Mom. Hi Dad. How you doing? (giggles)
Ryan: Yeah, there they are. She’ll text you later. OK?
Katharine: Yeah, we do communicate through text, actually.
Ryan: Um, who’s that guy who said “Yeah, McPhee!” and hugged you?
Katharine: I, I have no idea.
Ryan: No clue? Alright, it seemed like you guys knew each other. So you’re going to sing something from the American Idol CD.
Katharine: Yes, that is correct.
Ryan: What’s it gonna be?
Katharine: “Think”. Aretha Franklin’s Frink, Think. (she corrected herself)
Ryan: Right on! OK, here she is, Katharine McPhee live on Idol. Take it away.

THINK LYRICS

You better think (think) think about what you're trying to do to me
Yeah think (think, think), let your mind go, let yourself be free

Let's go back, let's go back, let's go way on way back when
I didn't even know you, you couldn’t have been too much more than ten (just a child)
I ain't no psychiatrist, I ain't no doctor with degrees
But it don't take too much IQ to see what you're doing to me

You better think (think) think about what you're trying to do to me
Yeah, think (think, think), let your mind go, let yourself be free

Oh Freedom (freedom), freedom (freedom), oh freedom, oh freedom yeah

Hey, think about it
You, think about it

There ain't nothing you could ask I could answer you with I won't (I won't)
But I was gonna change you, I'm not, if you keep doing things I don't

C’mon think, think about what you're trying to do to me
Yeah think (think), let your mind go, let yourself be free

You need me Simon (need me) and I need you (don't you know)
Without each other there ain't nothing either can do oh

Freedom (freedom), freedom (freedom), freedom, oh freedom yeah
Freedom (freedom), freedom (freedom), give me some freedom oh freedom yeah

Think

(Ryan & Katharine’s post-performance interview)

Ryan: (hands Katharine back the shoes she took off in the middle of the performance)
Katharine: Thank you.
Ryan: Katharine McPhee, ladies and gentlemen. Have you sent her through?
Katharine: Wooo!
Ryan: We will know soon. Elliott is coming up next. Stay with us.
Ryan (to Katharine as show heads to commercial): Figured you might want those (the shoes).

RESULTS

Ryan: Welcome back to American Idol. It’s the moment we’ve been waiting for and the results our final three have been dreading. (Camera pans the final three, they all look very nervous). Now watch, take a look at this figure. Right on the screen.
