Maybe they just needed something more up-tempo that she and the girls could dance to a bit without getting so winded they couldn't sing. There's something about OT and NUG that kind of invites a little more barnburning interpretation. I wonder where they got the backup singers? They looked almost like twins. Maybe thatwas just because the videos were a little dark.

Maybe one of the ex "industry pros" can answer this for me. Before Over It, I never followed the progress of a single up and down the charts on such a macro/micro-scopic level. So I find myself surprised, to say the least, of the mechanics of how a song is released, added to playlists, increases in spins, etc, etc.

Now I had always assumed that songs climbed the charts relatively uniformly accross the country, that what is Top 5 in NYC is Top 5 in Peoria, Bakersfield, Houston and Anchorage. That basicly what's on AT40 is representative of the whole country. But with Over It, we've seen markets add early, peak, and drop off, while other markets are still adding, and some markets not even playing the song. My question is: how common is this? Is this more or less how it works now, or is Kat somehow being treated differently? Or is it just because she's a new artist? Or is it the genre? Or the song? Not that any of this matters in the grand scheme of things...I'm just curious!

I'm not an industry pro, but here's an anecdote: I visited Las Vegas in 1998, and the alt-rock station there was playing Everclear's "Father of Mine" in heavy rotation. I didn't hear it here in Seattle until the self-proclaimed "new-music station" (also with an alt-rock format) started playing it two months later. And Everclear is/was a Portland band, but the local/regional connection made no difference.

Bill, the long, slow progress of Over It has nothing to do with genre or the song, or Katharine personally. Over It is jumping through the same hoops as any other single released today. It's a difficult process, at best, and soooo competitive. This song may not peak as high as it should (being well-crafted fluff) because of the sheer competitiveness of the top 40 market along with the fact that Kat is relatively unproven at this point in her career. She is only starting to be known widely.

I think we're still stumbling over that thing of being amazed that the rest of the country/world/universe doesn't have the same ultra-high awareness of Katharine's life and times and career as we do. Someone reports that they attended a radio concert and the guys next to them had little idea who she was but thought she was hot. Half of that seems incredible to us, but we just have to be happy that people are discovering her and having a positive reaction. And a lot of people who knew and liked her from Idol have simply moved on to Season 6 and need to be made re-aware of her, if that's a word. Which is why OI was probably a good choice for first single, because a lot of those people knew her as the ballad singer, and the "well crafted fluff" was a good transitional song on her way to pushing the stuff that's really hot these days.

I think you got it right Groucho. My Dad has kept convincing me that us Kat fans may be getting a little antsy that she hasn't conquered the world yet, but that "Over It"has made a new start and a new direction that is getting raves ,not maybe as fast as we had wanted, but in time Katharine McPhee will be at the top of the music world.Over It may not have gotten platinum(yet) but it has made music lovers all over take notice. Her 2nd single should start to show the impact she has made thus far. When she gets introductions on some radio stations like "And here is Katharine McPhee who has a voice of an angel, and a body of a goddess singing her new single "OVER IT".

Some people come into our lives and quickly go.Others stay for a while and leave footprints on our hearts and we are never the same. That my friends is Katharine McPhee

It may seem like "Over It'" has been around a long time, but you must consider a lot of stations didn't start playing it until February.   Guys, who currently has the #1 video on VH-1 - three weeks in a row?  This is the time to start requesting again, while Kat's video is at #1, and mention that when you request.

Also, this weekend I heard OI about 6 times on Star 101 in the SF Bay Area.    I know the Los Angeles market is frustrated because she's not getting airplay, but she's still going strong in other large and mid-size markets.   So, let's take advantage of the positive press, and step up the requests because . . . "Over It" ain't over until the Fat Lady sings.

Yes, I e-mailed Sylvia Chacon, the DJ at KIOI last Friday about the Most Beautiful People news and  Sylvia was kind enough to mention that on air!  I also e-mailed her the link to VH1 and Sylvia mentioned on air yesterday that Kat was  #1 VH1 three weeks in a row!  I also noticed that her rank at KIOI is up from #5  to #3 this week. So, yeah, take advantage of the good news and step up the requests!!

We are definitely working together -- working on a record together. She sings so magnificently, it's just amazing -David Foster-

Yeah, just from my chart following...Over It hasn't done anything different than anything else.  Now, Kelly Clarkson's new song is getting added super fast but that's because she's got a 5-time platinum album under her belt.  But it still doesn't rocket to the top right away.  I think Kelly is still outside of the Top 20 in Top 40 airplay as of yesterday.  Yep, #22.

And check this out.  Beyonce & Shakira's "Beautiful Liar".  Currently #21 and dropping spins.  It never made it past #15!  So there's no guarantees!  Your name will get you to a certain spot but there has to be response from the audience to get it to the top!

But simply put...there's no uniformity because these stations add & drop things at different rates.  They'll only add songs when they have openings in their playlists.  So something has to go before they'll add Katharine's new song.  What would be nice is for a lot of these stations to just replace Over It with Love Story.  But they've waited too long in a lot of places for that to happen.  So she'll have to wait for another opening.

Anyway...Love Story's path up the charts will definitely be quicker than Over It's was.  How high will it go?  Can't tell you that.  But it'll certainly get interesting pretty quick I'm sure because at the least all of these stations she's doing radio shows for will jump on Love Story and promote their concert with it.  And we're talking New York, Boston, Seattle, Atlanta, Kansas City, Sacramento, Minneapolis and Allentown (just outside Pittsburgh) here.  So that would be a nice headstart for LS as far as audience #'s go.
