This second part of Kat's American Idol Journey, is a song from the Billboard Charts.

Katharine McPhee chose "Black Horse & The Cherry Tree".  What do you all think of that performance?

Sitting on the floor, with two of the Idol band members, it was fabulous. It made KT Tunstall a huge star, thanks to Katharine McPhee.

Totally innovative and original!! Perfect song that allowed Kat to be playful and show off her fun side!! I believe Tunstall has acknowledged Kat, and the fact that the recording rocketed up the charts after this charmingly, bouncy performance!! Kat also demonstrated her versatility;that she would not be limited to the ballad!!!!Kat continues to do this boundless stuff today.....with all her recent acoustic performances she demonstrates she is a truly innovative song interpreter, capable of anything!!!

One of the most talked about performances in Idol history, and rightfully so.  With all of Katharine's great performances on Idol I'd have to rank this one 5 or 6, but based on impact it's easily top 3.  Impact not only on Kat's Idol future, but the entire pop music world.  Just ask KT Tunstall.  It was daring, innovative, vocally exquisite, fun, exciting...stop me anytime.   It turned out to be not only a fan favorite, but a favorite of non-fans as well.  I've seen countless posts that go something like this..."Well she's not my fav, but that performance was hot.  I gotta give her her props."  And we all know how much it pains some of them to give Katharine her due.  I think we'll still be talking about this one for a long, long time.

Yup, I agree with Mark 100% on this. BHATCT was probably #2 in impact right behind SOTR. And it came at the perfect time too, after a lackluster first song, and before the infamous Elvis week. This is the song that got Kat to the Kodak, because if not for BHATCT Kat may not have made it to the Top 3 to sing SOTR.

Well, like Randy used to chant over and over, "Song choice, song choice, song choice!"
And I can still remember Ryan introducing this one, he sounded genuinely surprised,
although he couldn't have been, he'd seen the rehearsal - "And here's Katharine McPhee -
and she's.... on the floor!" Someone somewhere said they thought the choreography
(or whatever you call dancing on your knees) for this one was really risky because it
could have come off as awkward or weird looking or whatever, but it didn't, it worked,
and turned into a great performance song for the tour as well. Especially after her initial
absence from the tour, the beginning was almost like "Woo hoo! Here I am - at last!"

I think I held off until I heard Suddenly I See. See, a lot of people DO wait until they've heard a couple of catchy singles before they invest in an album.

There were some people on the 'AI' board last year who called this out as a potential perfect choice for Kat. I'd heard of the song--though hadn't heard the recording yet. Really, it was the only logical choice for her...considering most other Top 40 available was Hip-Hop. A lot of people on the board were wondering just how she was going to cope. And, because Kat's fans worry a lot (we were even more worried then ), we knew it was going to be a challenge. I remember wondering just how the contestants negotiate if one other contestant wants to sing a particular song. I could just see Kat fighting to get 'Black Horse' when maybe one of the others wanted it. Her landing that song was the best thing that happened to her, of course. As already noted, had she picked a weaker song after 'AAO'--she very well could have been voted off the next night. Though that's really arguable considering she could likely make magic with the crappiest of songs. She could have even handled any Hip-Hop hit easily.

Some of you probably remember how we found out about Kat singing 'Black Horse' several days before it was confirmed. Someone went on KT Tunstall's MySpace (well, I think it was her MySpace) and there was a little blurb on her page saying "Watch 'AI' contestant, Katharine McPhee sing KT's 'BH&ACT' Next Tuesday Night" (or something close to that). A few thought it was a hacker message or some kind of misinformation campaign...especially when 'AI' wouldn't confirm it. KT could have gotten in trouble for announcing that, because 'AI' didn't want ANY spoilers out there about what songs the contestants were going to sing. I don't remember for certain--but I think KT's people took that ad down off her website a day or two later. Maybe somebody can confirm that for certain. But, in any case, some smart people realized it had to be true coming from KT's base.

Sure enough, it was finally confirmed on the Monday before show day. A lot of us even went on KT's page and downloaded her studio recording of it. When I first heard KT's version, I didn't connect with it right away. It's strange how you don't really love a song until you hear someone else do it. Now, I consider that one of my favorite songs of last year.

Yes, that bit with Katharine on her knees while performing. Well, I think she was basically inventing on the spot there. Ryan really did look surprised she was doing that. Kat knew she had to really deliver...and placing herself in spontaneity mode helped her immensely. Some artists need that to be more creative and truly come through big time. And she excelled in every way...including doing new things that had never been done before. It also meshed a Folk/Rock type of sound with a slight Broadway stage sensibility Kat brought to the table. Kat's voice was still in perfect shape too--so this was truly Kat at her creative and vocal best. It's amazing realizing how short it was (the usual required 90 seconds) when you play back the video. When you play it back in your mind...it always seems longer.

This was also the time when box drummers probably got flooded with calls for box drumming lessons.

Last summer, we heard all those stories(now near urban legends) about KT wanting to buy Kat a beer, a pizza, a fruitcake and I don't know what else in saying "thanks" for placing her song into the mainstream. I think some people still connect Kat to 'Black Horse' more than KT, amazingly. Had Kat put that out as a single--she would have had a #1 before her music career even got started. Depending on how you think the song should be sung...she brought it to life better than anybody could have.
