Aside from listening to Katharine, I'm not usually into listening to "pop" music, but I recently have been listening to some stuff that I think would have made a perfect vehicle for her.
Has anyone heard the new Korn MTV unplugged CD? I think that the duet that they do with Amy Lee of Evanescence on "Freak on a Leash" would have been much better if Katharine had done it. Don't get me wrong, I do like Amy Lee, but as good as she is, she can't compare to Kat. In the louder segments of the song, her thin voice gets a little lost, and that certainly wouldn't have happened to Kat.
Also, a long time group that I listen to a lot is "Delerium"; a side project from the members of "Front Line Assembly". It is atmospheric and moody type of music where they invite guest (usually) female vocalists to perform on various cuts. Any one of their tracks would benefit from Katharine's wonderful vocals. She would put any of the previous vocalists in the dust with her amazing vocal skills.
Just think of what other projects Katharine could lend a hand to and make those projects really shine.
I have that Korn Unplugged recorded on my DVR, but I haven't got around to watching it yet. I did however see a clip of the "Freak" duet. I like Amy Lee, but Katharine can sing circles around her.
I am one of those people who would love to see a Kat / Chris duet of "Broken" (originally by Seether w/ Amy Lee). I think that would be amazing. With Katharine's talent the possibilities are seemingly endless. I hope she does get to do a lot more collaborations in the near future.
ETA: I'm in the same boat with you in that I don't listen to a lot of pop music besides a few artist that I like. I typically listen to mostly rock (90's alternative preferably) and some hip-hop, etc., but I digress. I've always wondered how Kat would sound with some gritty rock riffs behind her, in the vain of Evanescence.
OT: Check out the Freak on a Leash music video if you get the chance.
Seems odd, because I know it's not her preference, but I think Kat would make a PERFECT front person for an Evanescence / Garbage type band. She's surely got the pipes.
That's why I got the CD of Korn MTV Unplugged because I saw the video first. I liked it so I got the CD!!! And that is why I immediately thought of Kat, when I saw the Amy Lee duet. Every time I listen to it, I imagine what vocal fills Kat would use.
Last season on Idol during "2000's" week before we found out what they were singing, for some reason the first song that popped into my head for Kat was "My Immortal". Totally random, but I think it would've worked. Obviously with her talent and versatility she could easily pull off fronting an Evanescence type band, but it wouldn't be the BEST direction for her to go, IMO. It would be fun to see though.
Yep... For the most part I agree with that...BUT it COULD work. A couple of years ago I had a wonderful opportunity to run the sound board at a local Garbage concert and I was amazed at Shirley Manson's voice. Granted, she has no where the technigue or the tonal quality of Kat, but what amazed me was how delicate her (Shirley's) voice was and is. Shirley has 2 basic modes.....A whisper or a full out growl from her gut. But, even on songs that are fairly hard rocking, Ms. Manson used her "whisper" voice quite effectively. A song that comes to mind is "Fix Me Now" from their first CD, where half of the song she is barely singing while the band plays away....loudly. That could possibly work for Kat on CD, but for the life of me I just can't really picture Kat as a full out rocker chick.
I dunno. The thought of her growling into the mike, smoking and chugging Jack between songs just doesn't seem to jive with MY picture of Katharine. But, until her CD came out, I never thought about her being a pop diva either, and that seems to be working well, so who knows??????
I don't really consider Amy Lee a true rocker. While she fronts a band, her vocals are about as far away from being considered rock as they come. Her voice is thin and frail and most of that is overcome by the use of microphne techiques and amplification. Even on Korn's unplugged "Freak on a Leash" her vocals get overwhelmed when the band goes into second gear. But, with that said Jonathan Davis of Korn doesn't have an all powerful voice that you traditionally think of as a "hard rock" voice, either. Unique, yes, powerful, not especially. So, you don't have to have a voice that will break glass or anything to front a rock band.
Errr... sorry about that. Too many years as a musician and in the music business.... I have an opinion about everything......
PS. I never mentioned this before, but I like your sig. But..... Does Al Stewart know about this????
Yeah, "My Immortal" would have been a great song for Katharine to do. And something that would have shown her versatility off in a way she never really showed it on Idol. Doing a Christina song was kind of a predictable and safe move on her part.
And I'm still waiting to hear that rumored Chris & Kat duet of "Broken". That would have been fantastic. Are we ever going to find out exactly what the plans were for Kat on the Idol Tour before she got sick? She's never said, has she? I remember she said in an interview before the tour that she was getting 20-25 minutes on stage. Which would have been 4-5 songs I'd think. Although her three songs only took 10-11 minutes as it was so...maybe she had two extra songs plus a duet? I'd love to know.
Need to remember that at the next chat she does...
Interesting. The song that immediately came to my mind was Garbage's "The World is Not Enough". Though tame by Garbage standards, I thought it would be a good choice of songs to showcase Kat's talents. As much as I adore Kat, I can't quite picture her singing something like "Push It" or "Androgyny". It just doesn't quite fit, but for Shirley Manson it works perfectly. But like you said, it would be fun to see.
