Because it's so out of genre for Katharine. She needs to find a really good crossover hit and nail it. And since Kat is not a power belter she should stay away from alot of the country rock songs. One song that comes to mind is "I Will Always Love You", made famous by the great Whitney Houston, but originally written and sung by Dolly Parton.

She needs to do a popular country song to gain some of the country fans. Maybe Faith Hill or Martina Mcbride.

Katharine's not going to win over country fans no matter how well she does...at least not with Kellie Pickler around. If she can outlast Kellie, however, I believe she will pick up almost all of the Pickler votes. Real country addicts won't be fooled by one great country song. They know Kat's roots are in Jazz and R&B, and that will be the flavor of her album should she win.

I think Kevin is right- a good Faith Hill or McBride song would fit Kat to a tee. But some older country songs would be good for her too: like Crystal Gayle's "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" or a Patsy Cline song like "Crazy" , or Olivia Newton-John's "If You Love Me Let Me Know".... Those all have a country-pop flavor. I predict Country week will be good to Katharine ! ... matter of fact, just put me down for the first copy of Kat's album saluting the women of country music !!

I will always love you (Dolly Parton), that could work. I agree with bill here. she should tottaly avoid upper range belting, and bring back that (Since I fell for you) sweet tone...

I think Kat could win some country fans if she blows away Kellie and Bucky in their own genre. I actually like alot of country and never did listen to jazz or R&B, but I love Kat. Don't get me wrong, I don' t think Kat is going to get a massive amount of country fans, but I think she will get some if she does well.

Actually, there are a number of pop-country crossover songs that have a jazz/R&B flavor. Patsy Cline's "Crazy" is one good example. Also, Willie Nelson's "Night Life" or "Always On My Mind". Or how about the Ray Charles versions of "I Can't Stop Loving You" or "You Don't Know Me"?

And the "Until You Come Back to Me" kind of song. That performance during the first week of the Top 12 was amazing...her presence, her performance, her appearance, everything was fantastic and I will always associate that song with Katharine now! Given that the theme has to be country, I'm wondering if she can just put some of her own jazz & blues into a song-- mix it up and make it her own, the way the judges are always telling them to do. Staying within the theme but making it her own style (goodness knows we've seen other certain overrated performers do that with the themes). All that screaming and belting that some people do is actually a turn-off to those of us who are beyond our teenage years. We know Katharine is talented enough to put something together and make it work, though. I have faith in her! AND , if they have a Broadway theme this year, she will definitely be able to blow that one away like none of the other singers can. Remember how much trouble Season 4 had with the Broadway theme? That would be Katharine's masterpiece though.

I don't know if it's Broadway or not, but I heard this song on the "Jazz Brunch" show on a local radio station last weekend, and immediately thought that it would be perfect for Katharine:

I just loved "Maybe You'll Be There" immediately, and thought it had  the perfect jazzy/bluesy melody and rhythm for Katharine's style!

Oh there's no need to worry! There are a lot of really great country songs that Katharine can really pull off - Lynn Anderson had a similar tone, maybe 'I never promised you a rose garden?' Even some Martina stuff - now I think she would be able to sing 'How Far' a lot better then Kellie did

I don't think Katharine should do "I will always love you" it's a total stereotype.
I don't want another slow performance either, something a bit more fun like Faith Hill's "This Kiss" or Martina McBrides "This One's For The Girls".

I beg to differ!       I am a country music Fan .  I am a HUGE fan of Katharine.
I do not care for Kellie at all- She does not represent the genre well at all.  She is mediocre 2nd rate self-proclaimed "country singer" at best.   Katharine is more of the caliber of Trisha Yearwood, Martina McBride, Sara Evans, Leeann Rimes.    She can sing this music and sing it well.    She won't be "fooling" anyone with her beautiful voice and performance. She doesn't need to win me over- I'm already there, and I don't think I'm all that unusual.

She has to take a risk this week and show some personality. Possibly something by Patsy Cline like "I Fall To Pieces" or "Crazy". If she could nail either of those two songs, she would win over tons of country fans. I believe she has the voice and talent to do either of these songs

Welcome to the board catharinealice!

I only meant that the hard-core country adidcts know that Katharine won't be making many country recordings, so they probably won't vote for her over Kellie. I certainly agree that Kat is a muc more accomplished vocalist than Kellie, and would make a fine country singer if she so chose.

Carrie65, I think "I Fall to Pieces" could be a great choice for Katharine, more so than any other Patsy Cline song. I'd just be concerned about whether it's current enough to attract the larger audience. Kat already has us 30-40+ year olds in her corner, now she needs to appeal to the 15-20yYO crowd.

"I Fall To Pieces" would be a good choice, but it's pretty old, I think she needs to do something a little more modern. I think something by the Judds or Wynonna would fit Katharine really well, but they're not mainstream anymore. I don't listen to country very much, but I do like Shania Twain or Faith Hill.

Krazy about you, Kat!!! You're an Angel on Earth!

Anyone find out what song Kat is doing tonight? A few other websites have spoilers for Elliott, Taylor, and Bucky.

I read from another board.  They interviewed a AI vocal coach and he said Kat had a hard time picking a country song.  Mandisa & Chris do their homework for the country week. He said Bucky and Kellie are expected to do well.  I'm a bit worried. Hopefully, Kat rebound nicely from last week.  God bless.
