REQUESTING TIPS
It is very important to try and follow these tips when it comes to requesting a new song on the radio. We want Katharine to be heard but we must make it in a mature and respectful manner.
1. Write a request email.
Tell the DJ that why you want the song you requested heard. Don't just simply write "Please play "My Destiny" by Katharine McPhee. Thank you."... this kind of short request emails will not impress the DJs. Write something like "I would like to request Katharine McPhee’s "My Destiny" because..." is more approriate. For more sample emails, please refer to this thread:
http://www.katharinefans.com/Forums/tabid/92/view/topic/postid/23107/forumid/34/tpage/1/Default.aspx#24494
If you don’t hear the song, DO NOT upset and feel like giving. Just reminding the DJs about Katharine is always a nice start. When you hear the station play the song make sure you let them know you heard it and thank them.
Try to personalize all email requests by stating the DJ's name, or mentioning something you heard the DJ say. This is just to let them know that you are a real listener.
And do not ever mass mail your requests to more than one station at a time. This will surely sabotage our requesting efforts.
2. Make a phone request.
Sometimes phone calls are more important and more efficient than email requests. For US peeps, when at all possible, pick up the phone and call your local stations to request songs.
Do not call stations more than 3 times a day). They will most likely begin to recognize your voice and get annoyed. Call the stations a few times a week. Please be polite to the DJs and always remember to say “please” and “thank you.”
3. Stick with your stations.
It’s best to stick with calling in and e-mailing from the stations in your local listening area or the stations that broadcast online. Radio stations have caller ID and they can tell when you’re not calling from their listening area.
4.Try to target big stations too.
Big stations usually have more listeners and it carries a lot of weights in terms of audience impressions.
5. Do not spam the stations.
1 or 2 emails or phone requests a day at each individual station are quite enough. Some stations will e-mail you and tell you to stop sending e-mails if you keep spamming them. It will definitely harm Katharine’s chances of being played.
Also, please don't email the same DJ more than once a week. You can call more than this but please don’t email more than once a week.
MORE TIPS
When you request,
…don't just say “I love Katharine McPhee… she rocks” blahblah. Focus only on the particular song you are requesting and tell them why it's a great song that you want to hear. In their mind, the artist is secondary. The song itself is what they are interested in hearing feedback about.
You can also try to build a good relationship with the DJs. Some DJs love to interact with listeners and if you have good relationship with them, they will always read and reply your emails, and will play your requests easily.
You can request at those stations that have "Listen Online" on their sites. But please really listen to the stations for a few minutes before you request. Find out what type of music they are playing at the time. There might be special programming going on that would make your request of a current song inappropriate. Find out which DJ is working at the time and request directly to them.
