This appears at http://www.taylorhicks.com/ first item in the news section. Pretty drastic step for managment to take rght on one of their artists websites.

Discussion about this elsewhere concludes that the main difference between this and the efforts on Kat's behalf is that the radio people are actually interested in promoting Katharine and like the song while with Taylor they have the opposite feeling.

Anyway, this isn't meant to discourage anyone but it is good to learn from the dark side of street team efforts and not cross that line between helping Katharine and hurting her by being too annoying!

Just To Feel That Way Efforts

"While we all deeply appreciate and welcome the support for Taylor Hicks coming from the Soul Patrol and directed at radio, it's important that the line between persistence and annoyance isn't crossed. Many of our programmers are now feeling overwhelmed and inundated by incessant demands for airplay, and we are now facing a "law of diminishing returns" scenario, where programmers are being more SCARED AWAY from supporting "Just To Feel That Way" than they are being encouraged to support it. To be honest, we get nearly daily complaints from radio asking us as a record label to "Call off the Soul Patrol".

Years of experience has shown us that the best way to "help the cause" of Taylor at radio is NOT by sending emails and/ or flooding the phone lines, but rather, if you want to help, feel free to write a good old fashioned letter and pop it in the mail, thanking those stations in your markets that ARE supporting the record, and politely requesting it from those that are not. One letter per fan is more than enough.

it should also be noted that Taylor's primary focus, and the format that has been MOST receptive at radio thus far, are the mainstream AC stations. a list of those stations is available at many of the fansites and we can help supply proper mailing addresses to make sure that any letters written are pointed in the right direction. Again, we welcome the support and enthusiasm, but rest assured that the label and the management team are both definitely on the case, and there isn't a programmer out there who isn't aware of Taylor, his tour, his current single, and the strength and loyalty of his amazing fans.=

Once again, thank you all so much for your efforts - we thank you and Taylor thanks you. Let's continue to focus our efforts in the best way that we can to support Taylor."

Well it's pretty obvious that Top 40 stations aren't going to be that receptive to Taylor.  He doesn't fit what they do.  I remember Kat's interview with Romeo at Z100 when he continually said, "You certain have the look, Katharine."  And that IS a part of it when it comes to Pop music even though you are only hearing the songs on the radio.  Mainstream Pop is about more than just music (that should be obvious given some of the things that hit and some that don't...it's not always about the best songs) and frankly Taylor's got nothing to offer those kinds of radio stations.

Maybe, maybe 10 years ago when it wasn't as beat-driven or urban-leaning.  I think Kat explained this awhile ago about how Pop music has changed and she had to go along with that which is part of the reason her record is the way it is.

Taylor's stuck on AC radio and that isn't the greatest format to be stuck on.  Now Katharine could have some AC hits probably with her ballads but she can have them crossover to HAC/POP if she's already established herself on those stations.  They'll be receptive to songs from her if she's already proven popular on their stations.  If she started out with "Ordinary World" she gets no traction on the Z100's of the world.  But maybe down the line she could do "Home" and get it played on those stations because they've been playing Katharine McPhee songs for months and they've done well.

Anyway...radio stations want to be associated with "hot" stuff.  Taylor may have won Idol but he doesn't appeal to the demographics that listen to Top 40 radio.  Katharine & Chris do.  And that's what you are seeing on the radio airplay charts.

"I saw Katharine McPhee when there were about 12 contestants left on American Idol. She blew me away. I loved her grace, her style, her poise, her voice and her hair! I wanted her to be the face of Sexy Hair because she represented everything that I had in my head for the brand: youth, beauty, talent, class, a young sophistication, and sexiness." -- Jim Morrison, CEO of Sexy Hair Products.

sjw, what are Eliott's chances, currently #60 on Top 40 and #96 on HAC for Waiting for You. Of course, KIIS-LA has been playing his song.

Taylor won American Idol. Isn't that silly? What's going on this year with the Sanjaya issue is a testament to the fact that you don't have to be talented to make it on Idol. The audience wasn't aware of it's manipulative powers the first few seasons, so we got real stars.

There were a share of "controversies" in prior seasons too.  I don't think it ever affected who won the show until last year though.  I think it's pretty obvious Chris got lost in some crazy voting schemes by the Soul Patrol coupled with the judges inspiring Kat Fans like crazy by sending her home on Elvis night.

I saw an article about all the oddities in Idol voting throughout the years.  I don't know if it was because of anything organized back in the day though.  I'm watching the first season of Idol on the weekend reruns.  That Nikki McKibbin knocks out Tamyra Gray in Top 4 week is sooooo ridiculous.  It's plainly obvious that the finale should have been Kelly & Tamyra although Justin was good.  I wonder if Simon's constant raving over Tamyra hurt her.

The whole thing is a little crazy.  You think they might had some kind of judges' safeguard portion to the voting to make sure a Sanjaya thing doesn't happen in the future.  Doesn't Dancing With The Stars factor in the judges' opinions with America?  Maybe they should do that on Idol.  Probably would have made Katharine go home Top 4 week but...
