08/31/2006 9:29 PM Alert

I know there are a lot of San Jose reviews already, but I wanted to provide a recap of the interesting and incredibly fun day I had.

Before the Show:  The Scene behind the HP Pavilion

I got off work early yesterday just to partake in the entire Idol Mania Brigade that happens when they are in town, so I get over to the HP Pavilion around 2 p.m. and as I'm crossing the street there goes the buses!  I quickly hustle over to the loading dock/behind the arena area where a group of fans are congregated.  The girls bus had already gone in and the guys bus was just pulling in the gate and Bucky had his head out the window saying, "I'll be back outside later!"  While hanging out waiting I met up with Asil (Lisa) from Katharine Fans and we were chatting and laughing about the site and the members, etc.

After a short bit Ace and Chris came out and signed autographs, took photos, etc. with the fans. Chris didn't stay too long; however, Ace did and was so kind and sweet to everyone.  I did tell him how much respect he is getting and I give him Props for being so great to the fans, and he responded with that sweet smile and said, "Aww, thank you!"  Then later Elliott and Bucky came to the gate and signed autographs, took pictures, etc.  Bucky was so sweet to this one lady in a wheelchair, he came out from behind the gate to take a picture with her and sign an autograph, etc.  It was also fun watching the guys carting around on their little motorized scooters and seeing Taylor catch a few and drop a few football passes.  He caught a pretty good one and I yelled out "Go Hicks!" and he looked up at the gate and everyone was cheering, it was pretty funny actually.  During this afternoon excursion I ended up getting Ace, Chris, Bucky and Elliott's autographs.   The girls never came out to sign autographs, it was kinda sad because the sweet lady in the wheelchair asked Ace to see if Kelly would come out because she was a huge Kellie fan, but to no avail.  So, I left around 3:40 to go home and get ready for the concert, fortunately I only live about 4 miles from the arena.

It's time for American Idols Live!

I get to the arena about 6:15 and meet up with Maddie, SJWolves, and Luvkntl and we take our quick picture. It was funny because as I'm meeting them I hear this, "Aunt Colleen!" shouted out and I see my two teenage nieces and they tell me how they got their seats upgraded by the radio station that was out in front of the arena, so they were all excited!  Then once inside met up with Minnie for another group picture with me, Maddie and SJWolves, and then finally find my friend and her daughter and get to my seats.

I'm going to just give some of my personal thoughts of the other artists because I really don't have any new info. to add as you've all read plenty of reviews.  I loved the entire concert; however, did notice that they all are pretty much in "Routine" mode at this point.  I thought Mandisa was outstanding, I just love her voice!  The crowd reaction for Lisa at the end was so loud and awesome and she just broke out into this big smile and said "Wow, Thanks!"  Apparently, she really noticed and appreciated the SJ crowd reaction.  Ace, Paris, Bucky and Kellie were all good, but I felt like I'd already been to the concert about 20x after reading all the reviews, although this was my first time seeing it live.

After intermission I was excited because I knew Kat was coming up soon, I was all set to call Laurie and Elphie per Elphie's instructions during Patience, which actually was great advice because I'm new to this 3-way cellphone calling thing!  The San Jose crowd was insane for Chris, I think he probably got the biggest response, Chris was good, but not one of my favorites.  I loved Elliott - he blew me away, I will definitely be buying his CD.  Then comes Patience and I call the girls for Kat's set and that went smoothly - yeah!  Kat of course was awesome and mentioned how she was sad that it was the last California show and thanked everyone for their support, and then closed with her signature song - SOTR.  The crowd loved her!  I was so happy to see her get such a great response.  Taylor as ya'll know was next and he was pretty good actually.  For the closing number of Living in America, Kat was up there having a good time and I noticed her skipping as she was going backstage . . . and then came the bows, show over!  My friend and I say goodbye as she has to get her daughter and friend home because it was a school nite, so now I transition into the funny part of the recap . . .  .

After the Concert Highlights

So the concert is over and the crowd is filing out, but I am hanging around because I'm scheming up a way to try to get backstage.  I call up Elphie and Laurie and ask them to help me write a note for Kat to have delivered backstage.  The usher lady tells me I need to leave the area I'm sitting in and I find this perfect spot to sit without being noticed, so I scale a small wall to sit in this handicap sitting area.  At this point Laurie, Elphie and I are just cracking up hysterically so I tell them, "Okay, focus, help me write this note for Kat," and then we finally get on task and starting drafting the letter.  So, the final outcome of this hysterically funny phone call is this note "Hey Kat!  Awesome Show!  This is Colleen "Co Baby" from Katharine Fans.com.  I just got off the phone with Laurie and Elphie, who you met in Nashville and they said I have to meet you TONITE to represent the Kat Pack and Katfia.   I hope to see you later! - Colleen"

After completing the letter and hanging up with Laurie & Elphie I proceed to go down where the people going backstage have congregated.  They start going back and I am just kind of trying to blend along with them even though I don't have a backstage pass.  This one security guy for the HP Pavilion was saying if you don't have your passes you have to leave, so I'm like "Okay, darn what do I do?" I then break into the work the charm mode and see this other security guy and say, "You look like a nice person can I ask you something?" and I proceed to ask him if he can get a note back to Kat.  He waves Fred over to talk to me and I tell him that I'm a big supporter and I'm representing Kat's fan website or something like that and was hoping to meet Kat and if he could bring back the note to her.

He then tells me, "I'm Fred the security guy on the Girl's bus I'm with Kat all the time.  We're on a really tight schedule and we have an 11-hour drive tonite, but I'll give her this note, I promise."  Fred was very nice about it and I could tell he was being truthful and sincere, which is how he has earned the nickname "Sincere Fred."  I then have to hang out and try to blend in with the working staff tearing down the chairs, etc., so the mean security guy doesn't see me.  I see the nice security guy and take his picture and thank him again.  I'm patiently waiting and Fred was giving orders to his crew with the note in his hand the whole time, eventually, he disappears backstage.  I was starting to wear out my welcome hanging around and the mean security guy finally tells me I have to leave and I'm like, "But, I was waiting to hear back from Fred, but, but . . . "he wasn't going to allow me to wait any longer, so of course, I obliged his request.  At this point I leave the arena knowing I tried my best to try to meet Kat, and who knows if Fred ever gave her the note.  I then head over to the area where the buses are loading and meet up with Maddie and Joe.  The whole time while waiting with them, Maddie is on the phone with Kimby (KatharineIdol06) giving her play-by-plays of the bus situation.  The third bus finally pulls out and next to the driver is Fred, I wave at him and say "Hey Fred!" and then look in the window and see Kellie and Kat sitting at the table and poof they were rambling down the road.

Maddie, Joe and I head to our cars and I get home and join the chat room crowd.  Kimby is on the phone still with Maddie and she relays the story about them following the buses and driving up to see Kat.  Kat does her wave to Maddie and then does the "Talk to the Shade!" action - LOL.  At this point I'm pretty beat and I say my goodnites to the chat room gang.  I go to sleep just cracking up over the day's experiences, but knowing I gave it a good Katfian try!
