CONFERENCE LINEUP. California First Lady Maria Shriver has announced the lineup for next Tuesday’s annual women’s conference in Long Beach, hosted by the former NBC anchor and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

New York Times columnist Friedman will moderate a conversation on leadership and the environment between former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Schwarzenegger.

Shriver will moderate a first-ever joint discussion with some of the spouses of the leading presidential candidates from each party: Elizabeth Edwards, Cindy McCain, Michelle Obama, Ann Romney and Jeri Thompson. What, no Bill Clinton?

ABC correspondent Deborah Roberts will moderate a conversation with women pioneers on leadership and the 2008 presidential race with first female White House Press Secretary Dee Dee Myers; first female vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro, and first female Governor of New Jersey Christine Todd Whitman.

Shriver will present the 4th annual Minerva Awards honoring the first couple’s picks as the most remarkable women of the year, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Sweet Alice Harris of Watts community organizing fame, Commander Maureen Pennington, Christy Porter, and Eunice Kennedy Shriver.

Other notable speakers include: Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan, Nobel Prize winners Dr. Muhammad Yunus and Jody Williams, First Lady of Mexico Margarita Zavala, Diane von Furstenberg, Jamie Lee Curtis, Katharine McPhee, Joan Baez, Eckhart Tolle, Nora Ephron and Linda Ellerbee.

Katharine's invitation to appear and speak along side such a "heavy-hitter" list of notables seems to validate comments that I made in the thread  "No disrespect to Elliott, buy why is he accomplishing more than her?"

Her willingness to devote time and talent to worthy events is definitely getting her noticed by very influential people! Wow! Although not her main intent, she is certainly bound to be making some very influential contacts that can surely benefit her at some point in time.... No matter what the need or reason! This is such an impressive event for her to be asked to participate in! I'm so very happy for and proud of her! She really is turning into that "force to be reckoned with"!!!

Thanks for the info on that. And welcome to the board, incidentally. It's gratifying to finally see Kat on video participating at these special events. The press seems to be getting shooed away lately at these things...and we have to hire our Kat gesticulation experts to find out what she's saying or singing in still pictures.

This event may be one of the most inspirational of them all--thanks to Kat mingling with Nobel Prize winners and other women of stature in the world. If this doesn't single out Kat as one of the most positive forces in her industry--then nothing will. Who gets asked at what event is more than enough symbolism to who's backing you out there. Kat has a solid shield of influential people rooting her on. So, even if she doesn't do wondrous things right off the bat...these people will never forget her and be around to support her when she really needs it. I can't think of a single young woman in Hollywood right now other than Kat who would be invited to something like this. Well, maybe Natalie Portman or Hilary Duff--even though they have their eggs in their own baskets.

If Kat's on that early in the morning (a perfect time for us Pacific Coasters)--I'm starting to wonder if she's singing the National Anthem again? We have yet to hear her do it all the way through, and it'd be a perfect opportunity. She'd finally be able to sing it in front of important people for once, too. At the NAB event last year--she sang it when most of the honchos were still sleeping in their hotel rooms.

I'm not sure if this means Kat's part of the conference will be shown on TV, but we should at least be able to get the webcast.

Worldly flair to women's conference

Governor's Conference for Women

When: Tuesday

Where: L.B. Convention Center

Among the participants: Tony Blair, Elizabeth Edwards, Cindy Hensley McCain, Michelle Obama, Ann Romney, Jeri Thompson, Queen Rania of Jordan, Katharine McPhee, Jamie Lee Curtis, Laila Ali, Joan Baezl, local mountain climber Samantha Larson, Linda Ellerbee, Geraldine Ferraro, Susan Saint James and Nobel Peace prize winners Dr. Muhammad Yunus and Jody Williams.

LONG BEACH - You can still tune in - or click on - if you weren't one of the 13,000-plus women who purchased tickets in less than 48 hours for an annual event in Long Beach that has evolved into a who's who affair.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair will be in Long Beach on Tuesday to talk about the environment with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger at The Governor's Conference for Women.

The annual event, hosted by first lady Maria Shriver, each year seems to draw bigger lineups.

"I think this year's conference has a little bit more of a global flavor to it," said Mulcahy Stein, executive director of the conference.

This year's conference also promises to draw its best media coverage.

Those who can't attend can watch the conference live at the conference's Web site, www.californiawomen.org, or on the California Channel.

For Long Beach viewers, Channel 8 will carry the event until 3:30 p.m. Viewers can also tune into channels 65, 69 or 95, depending on cable service, to view portions of the conference.

Only three major portions of the event will be aired live. Breakout sessions in the morning and the afternoon won't be shown live.

"You can watch it on your computer and you can watch it on your TV," said Craig Watson, vice president of communications for Charter's Western Division.
