If not for Denver …

Posted by Joanne Davidson @ 10:31 am

… there might not be a Katharine McPhee.
At least that’s what I found out from one of her most ardent fans,Kathleen Ahearn of Longmont.Kathleen’s the only Denver-area person registered at katherinesfans.com and when she learned, via my column in The Denver Post, that McPhee, the 2005 “American Idol” runner-up, was to be part of the David Foster and Friends entertainment lineup at last Saturday’s High Hopes Tribute Dinner, she sent an email encouraging me to interview McPhee while she was here.

The stars — Smokey Robinson, George Lopez, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Foster and McPhee — weren’t available for interviews that night, so I asked Ahearn if she knew of any Denver connections that McPhee might have. The answer was yes, and she proceeded to fill me in:

“Both Katharine’s parents, Peisha and Daniel McPhee went to college in Denver,” Ahearn writes. “I wasn’t able to find out what college Dan McPhee attended but, Peisha McPhee holds a BFA degree in musical theater from Loretto Heights College in Denver. I believe that today it is known as Teikyo Loretto Heights University. Katharine’s grandfather, Roger Fee, was the dean of the Lamont School of Music for several years at Denver University.

Dan McPhee, Ahearn continues, is a television producer whose works include “The Incredible Hulk Returns,” a 1988 work starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferigno. Peisha McPhee is a cabaret performer and recording artist and currently serves as artistic director, with Mel Dangcil, of the Cabaret Performance Workshop at Los Angeles City College. Their teaching techniques, Ahearn reports, “Received national acclaim and recognition, most notably on the Discovery Channel’s series, Slice of Life. Peisha also maintains a private studio practice in Sherman Oaks, Calif., where her students range in age from 11 to 75.”
So there you have it. You learn something new every day.

See Kat's picture with David Foster, BabyFace is #11 at this site. http://www.denverpost.com/seengallery
Another blog about the dinner will be posted by late afternoon today.

We are definitely working together -- working on a record together. She sings so magnificently, it's just amazing -David Foster-

Well, the article was certainly a surprize to me! And, I'm just a bit embarassed!. It's all of you who gave me most of the information and so, I really wished she had mentioned our site! I didn't expect to see my name in print, that's for sure!

There is one picture of Kat (so far) that is #12 on the list of photos.

Sorry, I didn't get this posted sooner, but I've been out all morning and just now saw the article myself. Thanks for posting it for everyone, Minne!

Now I'm really embarrassed! I read the article so quickly that I didn't notice that YEA!! she did mention our site!!!

On top of that, I gave you the wrong number of the photo.  Just chalk it up to my shock of seeing my name in print!!!

I promise this will be (I think) the last "blurb" from me for awhile...on this subject, at least!

Saturday was a pretty emotional day for me. Couldn't help but feel the "presence" of Kat being only 40 miles away! At my old age, I felt pretty silly about the whole thing! Being so close to seeing her and yet so far!  My kids would have loved to help buy their "Kat addicted" Mom a ticket to the event, but only the $1000 ones were left! My son and his wife are saving to adopt a baby and my daughter is just getting back on her feet financially. They felt badly that they couldn't do this for me. But, from what Joanne reported, I wouldn't have been able to get close to Kat or even snap some photos!

As I've mentioned before, I consider you all my extended family and no one likes to let family down!

On the more positive side, my kids do think that something positive has to come out of this whole endeavor for me. Perhaps the start of a new career in my "Golden Years"!!  Don't know what career!

I have felt extremely blessed and honored to have tried to get the coverage in Denver for Katharine. I still find it utterly mind boggling to think that I'm the only avid Katharine fan in the Rocky Mountain area! No offense meant to our great fan in Wyoming!

I know she will never know what I did, but that doesn't really matter to me. If having tried and making contact with the right people for her was the best I could do, then so be it. In some ways, it was more important to do it for all of you! I treasure your friendships!

Hi Everyone! I just read my e-mail and got a note from Peisha I wanted to post here for you. Kathy...I copied your note (above) and sent it to her...SURPRISE!!!  She responded back to me and I really wanted you (and all of you here) to know how much your efforts and support for Kat have been noticed and appreciated!

Thanks so much Danette, for sending my note on to Peisha! I hope you can send the Denver Post Blog on to her as well!

It was a wonderful thing that she took the time to acknowledge our efforts on Kat's behalf. Now I finally feel like I did accomplish something!

I'm still trying to figure out how to post the photo so, maybe everyone can just go to the Denver Post Blog where there is a link to all the photos. #11 is the only one with Katharine.

This whole experience has been a learning one and extremely rewarding due to the wonderful response of all Kat's fans here at KMF!

For those of you who wouldn't want to read the entire 2nd Blog on the High Hopes Tribute Dinner, here is the "important stuff"!!

High Hopes has always been good, with entertainment provided by such favorites as Neil Diamond and Bob Newhart. But this year was the best, with Grammy- and Academy Award-winning musician/composer David Foster flying in with such friends as the legendary Smokey Robinson, comedian George Lopez, singer/composer Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and “American Idol” runner-up Katharine McPhee to put on a show the likes of which Denver has not seen since the Carousel Ball ended its run in the mid-1980s.

Katharine McPhee added fuel to the gossip that she has become engaged to longtime beau Nick Cokas, by purchasing the Maui getaway offered for sale in the live auction. Cokas accompanied McPhee to Denver, and fans were wondering if the trip would be used for their honeymoon.

Kathleen, try e-mailing our new leader Bill the photo, and maybe he can put it up. We better get the corrected KMF site name to the Post reporter and ask her what Kat sang. I think Joanna did the best she could under the restrictive circumstances. She mentioned that all the performers arrived at 9am that morning, so we wouldn't have been able to get Kat on Friday morning TV anyway. I wonder if by mentioning the Maui vacation purchase and linking it to the gossip, that indicates Joanna's been lurking on Kat fan sites; OTOH, the vacation might be a gift to Kat's parents. BTW, the Rocky Mountain News also reported on the dinner, and managed to mention all the celebs except for Kat! Their reporter must not like Kat. grrrrr...

p.s. thanks also to a3boymom for getting that info from Peisha!

I think it would be really smart to just go ahead and do the honeymoon and get it over with.
Then when her career's really in gear and everything is going the way she wants it to, they can
just run to Vegas for a quick wedding and get started on the 15 kids while she has time, and
the honeymoon will have been all taken care of already. Doesn't that sound like a plan?

I was a little disappointed that the article just talks gossip and no details about what Kat sang and how wonderful she is, as the author wrote to Kathleen.

First of all, let me add my own thank you to the chorus.

Also, I'd like to second trsf's suggestion above. Too bad the picture from the Denver Post website is distorted. Although it appears that the writer emailed you the original photograph, probably bigger and not distorted. If this is the case, can you please forward it to someone who can put up the picture?

If you get something like google alerts you can see what most people seem to think is important,
and it isn't facts. There have been dozens of spinoffs on the engagement rumor, all seemingly from
that one original post (they all sounds just alike, just spun a bit different according to the personal
taste of the new poster) because people just love to gossip and speculate. I'm not saying I don't.
I'm just sayin'. I don't mind speculation, I do object to the spiteful, obscene, mean crud I read a lot
of places. Usually it's not the bloggers themselves so much as the people who leave comments that
makes me want to spit purple.

Just received another email from Joanne at the Denver Post. It was a personal note but I want to share it with everyone. She finally did respond to my request about the songs........

Hopefully, if nothing else, I've made contact with enough media outlets here in Denver that "if and when" we have the pleasure of having Katharine back again, I would have made them aware of her existance! I've already written to the other contacts I made, just as a follow up reminder about what a great performance she gave.....and what they missed out on!!

Dear Kathleen: Thank YOU for the kind words! It really was a fabulous event and I think everyone really enjoyed the show ... all of the performers were so good; they looked like they were having fun, too, not just "phoning it in" and wishing they were elsewhere.
Katharine sang "Over the Rainbow" and one other that I didn't catch the name of. I'm not up on all of the new music, unfortunately, so it wasn't something I recognized ... but the rest of the audience sure did and greeted her with very enthusiastic applause.
Thank you again for all of the "good stuff" that you provided. I've had several other compliments on that blog, people saying that they enjoyed reading something more personal than the routine biographical notes that often accompany a performer's local appearance.
All the best,
Joanne

Unfortnuately, the photo emailed to me is also distorted! One would think the equipment and the photographer should have been better! Just me expressing sour grapes!

We actually, were lucky to get the coverage we did. The one slip-up I made was in not contacting the Rocky Mt. News. This was because they are owned by the Denver Post and to be truthful, I goofed up on neglecting them. But, the only thing that Denver has on it's mind since before this weekend, is baseball!!!

Is the photograph sent to you in the email the same 231kb jpg image as that show above?  Anytime an image is  resized, or rotated, ect. (especially a large HQ image file) it will distort it some.  I am just wondering if you have the exact image that was on that Denver Post slide show or a slightly better (albeit, still distorted) version.  If you right click the file and look at Properties you can tell.

Thanks for all that you have done in trying to follow up on this event.   The photos are credited as Special to the Denver Post/ Steve Peterson and there is a  Steve Peterson is a somewhat famous  photographer named that so if is that guy I doubt it is the equipment or photography skill and more likely some minion at the Denv
