POWER PLAY AND CODEPENDENCY IN AMERICAN IDOL

Doesn't it come to you so clearly that this is now the trend that AI is going into? I'm talking about "the entertainer" vs. "the singer" phenomenon idea that seemed to have gone on for 2 years now. The first 4  years were the singing competitions and the last 2 are the singing and entertaining competitions. It was clear last year with Taylor Hicks and this year with Blake Lewis.

Last year, they had to sacrifice a casualty with Katharine McPhee. Her position was taken advantaged of, being so marketable in other facets--beauty, acting, modeling and singing. They did not need an obvious story of a girl from Los Angeles. Taylor Hicks and his Elvis-Ray Charles antics became the first test of "entertainer", with him being able to play his guitar and harmonica. However, his winning the title was overtaken on the charts by a 4th place finisher.

This year, we've seen Blake Lewis and his hip-hop techno antics beat box and play some guitar too--another entertainer. However, Jordin Sparks was not to be a casualty because she would be the test for the "young and talented" versions of contestants, testing how far she could go with her appeal. In other words, FOX has been on an adventure with ploys and more on how to increase viewing-- such as AI's songwriting contest, the giving back to poor children of Africa, and now the band contest.

I just wonder how the judges must feel about having to disagree at times with AI and FOX on their schemes and tactics. Simon, the engineer of personality and emotional shocks, is actually the main person that steers the boat's gear. I don't know how much leverage he has over all the episodes. I think I have cracked their choreographed demeanor as co-dependent of each other's to create an efficient judging without a bad repercussion.

Take for example Paula. Being a woman, she was the one made to say to Melinda, on top 3 performances, that "it's not all about vocals and techniques but also about exciting the audience". This was to reduce a backfire among the women viewers if it was a male judge to say that. Of course, Paula has already cried on the show before this episode to pre-cushion the blow that was coming. Paula did not need to say something like that if it was a singing competition per se. She just gave away the secret formula of the show, or rather reinforced.

What the show is looking for is an exciting show and they think music, with all its bells and whistles and what not, is supposed to ignite that. Having said that, it would be implied that another person could possibly bring it on, thus directing the viewers to look away to change heart. The rest of the finalists would have to endure being the shock absorbers of bad news on the way to the show's end. They would be a mixture of good singers and "fronts" with their obvious or unusual flair of the ridiculous and well-meaning character to lend to the show. They have been eliminated for the obvious reasons or by design to take early falls to create "shockers" --for mere excitement.

I don't know how long FOX and AI could manage together to put up a show like this--- not being true to the main issues of a true talent search but more of bordering artistic insanity than reality. When the best singer gets eliminated, that is insane. Don't you miss "Star Search"? Or perhaps you would go for AI anyway, for the exposure.

Movie actors like Paul Newman, Jimmy Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall and Bette Davis make me want to live in the era they lived but I could have been just as inspired even now while I watch their work in films.

i agree with all that...and here's another tidbit...

sometimes i think the performance just sucks, and then it's Simon's turn to talk and he raves about it and suddenly i'm like..."oooooh, maybe it wasn't so bad after all!" The man has huge persuation techniques.

Mattsie, you cannot tell me that a televised show can ever be a pure singing contest.  If they wanted a straight singing contest just hide everyone behind a certain and have them sing.  We all know that the some of the most marketable singers in history haven't been the greatest singers.  They are searching for the AMERICAN IDOL.  Not the best undiscovered SINGER in the country.  Being an American Idol covers more than just singing, I think we all know that.

Some people are great singers but they aren't great performers.  People accused Katharine of not being a very exciting performer on Idol.  But sometimes people confuse running around the stage with being "fun & exciting" just like they confuse some of the vocal gymnastics some of the "singers" do as great singing.

People are going to like what they like.  That's why the show is so successful.  We all have our own feeling on what we like.  I preferred Jordin the whole way this year over Melinda.  And Melinda is a great singer and if the competition was on radio maybe I would have picked her but...it's not.  Melinda would have had to have been WAY BETTER than Jordin to beat her because like it or not Jordin's cuteness was a big help to her.

And take that back to last year.  As much as you want to talk about the "entertainers" here...you can't tell me that Katharine wasn't greatly aided by the fact that she's one of the most beautiful women on the planet.  And you know I love her and think she's a wonderfully talented singer but hotness took Haley to 8th place...Kat's singing took her beyond that to #2.

"I saw Katharine McPhee when there were about 12 contestants left on American Idol. She blew me away. I loved her grace, her style, her poise, her voice and her hair! I wanted her to be the face of Sexy Hair because she represented everything that I had in my head for the brand: youth, beauty, talent, class, a young sophistication, and sexiness." -- Jim Morrison, CEO of Sexy Hair Products.

MELINDA DOOLITTLE'S PERFORMANCES ON IDOL

American Idol SHOCKER: Melinda's Early Departure - ABC Video

Melinda Doolittle on life after the Idol limelight - ABC News Radio

On Top 3 Results: "Congratulations to you two," a frowny Cowell said, covering his face. "My commiserations, Melinda, 'cause you are one heck of a singer."

Simon (Post Idol finale ABC interview): "I felt it was unfair to her. Melinda deserved to win. I should have endorsed her more--it was the right thing to do. She had delivered 10 weeks in a row. She was the most consistent and she had the best voice. I believed if she had walked out on that Kodak stage, we would have seen the best of Melinda."

I FINALLY GOT TO DEFEND MY GIRL, MELINDA

Joe, anything is possible with television, even honesty and integrity. The problem lies on people's resolve to uphold it. Trends are not the best indicators of truth. You cannot tell me that people should just settle with mediocrity and degradation of  principles if only to give way to consumerism and corporate rule. If Whitney Houston and Celine Dion were in their 20's and had been to the show together with Taylor Hicks and Blake Lewis, in the name of american idol, who would you vote for, and who do you think would win? Hype could precede and go along anything that's trendy and popular. But talent is that which matters and that which counts in the end for beauty is just skin deep. American Idol is just a title conferred upon by a television show to someone TV thinks could impact sales. There are other avenues by which talent is professionally and appropriately measured. Whitney Houston did not just become the best  female singer because of her model-like physique. She couldn't even dance. It's for her incredible vocal talent that she is given such recognition, and that no one has ever seemed more qualified to hold the position. Her songs have been the standard of many singing competitions for female singers. Whitney Houston is one of the most influential musical artists ever. She would be the ultimate american idol (during her prime) for me.

Back to the issue. The songs sung on stage were not that many to really gauge a singer's capacity and ability. But if the contest was for another month, without restrictions of songs to sing, I'm sure Melinda could have blown your mind. Do you really think that there's no politics behind all these? Common, let's grow up a little bit. The show is subserved with financial motives and economic gains, in the name of a music talent search. Anything can happen in between. The problem that I see with some people that vote (mostly teens) is that they want to see the cuteness in a singer rather
