Totally agree Kat_BBall_06!!! Melinda and Jordin rightly should've been the last two standin, but people can't complain if that didn't vote.... More importantly, regardless of where they finish, the best singer ALWAYS ends up on top.... exp. Chris Daughtry, the flop of Taylor, etc... Melinda has a GREAT future in front of her, and she really didn't need this show! GO JORDIN!

Congrats to Jordin and Blake!

I can't say I'm especially surprised, I figured it was going to be a virtual tossup from the prior weeks voting trends. Melinda is a GREAT vocalist, but she never excited  her audience enough to coalesce into a solid fanbase. Not enough "IT" factor as they say. Blake has the most organized and SP-like fanbase as Co said, and he just may be tough to beat in the finals. Like it or not, we all knew that AI ends up being a battle of fanbases. The best talent usually percolates to the top early on, then fanbases coalesce and the true power shifts their way as the show heads towards the finals. And it will always be this way unless AI changes the voting rules.

My dear friends,

I can do this. I'm a big girl. It's not 9pm yet for me, but since I know the results already, I might as well concede. I'm doing this for the sake of Melinda's devoted fans who voted for Melinda all the way like me. Shocked? More than shocked. Insulted is more appropriate. However, I'm a sport in many things including this american idol show, but 2 years in a row? No way! I'm taking it harder this time, believe it or not. I have to retire.

So, before I soak my eyes in tonight's results, I'd like to sour-grape a little bit. I think I'd rather be a Pro than an american idol winner. I like that. I'm sure Melinda likes that too.

Secondly, I'd like to thank Greg for elucidating it so clearly the mechanics of this show. Melinda's career may have just been saved, as one day this great show might come to a close, only faster than planned, and everything about it might just be the jester's subject of ridicule in bar lounges. The free voting process will eventually kill it.

Tonight, this music talent show is officially just a show, nothing more. I hate to say it, but I have lost interest.

Last night, after Melinda's performance of Nutbush, Randy said, "When we make your record, you should put some of your repertoire, it will lengthen your career. I like that." Am I getting it right that Melinda has been bought out by a producer already? Randy Jackson himself? Clive Davis was not even on the show last night. I thought he was to say that. It tells me that Clive may or may not produce Melinda, but possibly someone else. The way it seems now is that the judges knew already even from last night. It really felt funny watching last night's show. The judges seemed all choreographed as to what they were to say. For Randy to have said something like that was tantamount to saying Melinda has already gotten a record deal, and in a subtle way, it was to let us know she would not be the winner. I remember last year with Katharine. Clive said something like that to her, and lo and behold, she didn't win! Nice words to cushion the blows? A-huh.

Like Elliott Yamin and Chris Daughtry, Melinda will be outside 19e. And, perhaps that is much better indeed. Now, let me go to knock myself out and drown my broodings away with Melinda's videos and mp3's over some electric ice tea on hand. Me and my girl, Melinda, will have fun with my home boys and girls-- Zzyzx and Cobaby. We 3 are the die-hard Melinda fans on board here. Party!

Congratulations to Jordin and Blake! If Blake wins, I could attend his celebration party in Seattle if I feel up to it. If Jordin wins, I 'm going to have a smile on my face, at least.  I remember, I fell in love with her on the show singing "To Love Somebody".

Nigel, when you are ready to retire from AI, I'd like to meet you.

some of you take television WAAAAAAY too seriously. You're all like "i've lost interest and i'm no longer watching idol ever again." LOL! How silly. Apparantly america, too, was bored with Melinda. You have to admit she never really moved the audience, nor myself, like Katharine did. Blake and Jordin both had their shining moments at some point. Can't say the same for Melinda. Perhaps if she wasn't so freakishly shy she'd have a bigger fanbase. Just goes to show you a voice is not enough.

You're such a flip-flopper, spree. First, you said you wanted Blake to win, then you changed to Jordin. Now you go back to Blake. You're the one who could not keep up with yourself. Too soaked in the guiles and pretense of television, I reckon, to see clearly? You justify your choice with the same television you just despised. Did you see Simon tonight? I bet he's thinking "when could I quit doing this judging thing. I'm losing credibility now. I gotta start thinking about the next project before this goes caput fast". I thought so. Wait, did you hear what Ryan said to Simon? He said, "yes, people used to like us." I bet even Ryan might soon quit his job. Tonight's results show had no enthusiasm at all except for the families of Jordin and Blake. Melinda's family looked so humble and yet so proud of their daughter. Melinda is such a sport. She had a big smile on her face and even held her arm up to cheer for Blake and Jordin. And, without crying, she gladly performed her signature song for the last time. That was the most dignified exit I've ever seen on this show, at this level. Maturity and character is what Melinda is about other than "one heck of a singer" as Simon put it. Now, try to enjoy the show along those lines, if you could, in the rightest of mind. Unfortunately, consciences are not for sale, in case nothing is available.

Mattsie - I was worried how you'd take the results, but you've taken them well.  I stayed away from the computer because I knew I'd be too tempted.  Melinda's gonna do just fine, but it's a shame she didn't make it to the Finale.

I am happy though, about Blake because I've been behind that boy from Day One.  I'm kinda tired now, and not much in a writing mood, but I do have to add for the FIRST TIME EVER on American Idol the WEST has won, this year, "The South Ain't gonna Do it Again!" 

Let's go West Coast - Congrats to Blake and Jordin!

Wow....I haven't even been on this board yet this season......but, I must say that was truly the SHOCK of the season....I fully expected Melinda to win..especially since dialidol.com got it right all last year (which showed melinda with the most votes last night). And because Simon went out of his way to pick a crappy song for Jordin - then proclaimed his "love" for Melinda....maybe that backfired...hmmm...I was just thinking too -today- that there have been no real shockers of the season....

I personally wanted Blake and Jordin in the finale because they were my 2 favorites. I hope Jordin wins, I think she's the best singer - HOWEVER, I think Blake is by far the most unique performer they've had on the show - his is the record I would buy and I personally thinks he's a helluva lot better than Taylor or Ruben. Either one - I think they are both great....I thought Melinda was great too - but, I think Jordin has the better vocal range...

However - since 7th place season 3 took home an oscar and golden globe - everyone seems to be a winner that makes it in the top 7 anyway....

and i'll probably flip-flop a dozen more times before next Tuesday, but who cares, cuz BOTH of them are in!  Never wanted Melinda to win, no matter how i voted.

And I understand the feelings of you and Mattsie on Melinda getting the boot tonight. While I probably didn't praise Melinda as much as I should have--I agree with your earlier rebut on this thread, standing up for the frequently ignored older demographic and quality of voice in mainstream music. I only wish the music business worked like it used to work. We need quality voices like Melinda and being able to bring her type of style and singing to Top 40. Nevertheless, there's still plenty to celebrate here. The reality is that Melinda is STILL going to be a big star--probably just as huge as Blake and Jordin will be. Because her type of music usually ends up on AC charts, we'll be seeing her rule the roost there for years to come. There's nothing wrong with that at all, because plenty of artists rule there and become multi-millionaires/superstars because of it. I just wish people would realize that it doesn't matter where you chart. If you're successful there and you know who you are as an artist--who cares if you're catering to a particular kind of audience. Jazz artists know this. Many of the top artists in that field are gazillionaires...despite jazz being 1% of overall worldwide album sales today. However, many have albums on the jazz charts for up to a year and profit big time. In my mind, Kat should reconsider who she is as an artist and not worry about having to cater to Top 40 all the time. Top 40 is nothing but fickleness and material that doesn't last forever.

Thanks to Mattsie for thinking my evaluations of 'AI' were worthwhile. Though I'm not the only one who's analyzed the 'AI' machine half to death here on KMF. We've had plenty of people here who've had amazing insights into how this process works. While I talked more in brutal truths sometimes--it's only because (after last year) I and most of us realized that winning 'AI' isn't always pretty. Most of my recent comments pertain to what would ultimately be best for each of the Final Three. Yes, there's some benefits to winning it all. Carrie Underwood seems to be the best example recently of what it can do for you. All the rest are a different story though. For those of us on the 'AI' board last year, the contract of the winner was leaked at one point toward the finale time. Most of us didn't like what we saw in the fine print. That was when some of us realized Kat would be better off being runner-up. I remember saying that on the board there at the time. She knew that too...and it's why she was more than happy to end up where she did. Being under control of 19E for seven years (or more) was and is ultimately a bit restrictive for some artists. It's part of the reason Kelly Clarkson got out of her contract a number of years back.

Melinda is just too great of an artist to need the 'AI' title. Now she's free to pick whatever label she wants (perhaps Clive picking her up?) and having a hit album come December. While I'm happy for Blake getting into the finale--it might have been better for him to be free, too, so he won't have any restrictions on doing what he wants to do. Now, he'll have to make an album for one of 19E's labels. What will they force him to do? Or will he fight for what he really wants to do (i.e. possibly techno)?

Anyway, I knew Jordin was staying tonight. The show didn't reveal just how close the voting totals were (I earlier guessed it was closer to the 33% split of last year)--but I'm sure it came to a hair between Melinda and Blake going home. Those of us who picked Blake to go made a good educated guess. And congratulations to the few who picked Melinda. Actually, judging the fanbases of the three (as Bill pointed out) was the way to truly gauge what was going to happen.

So now we have yet another male/female showdown. I'm excited for it--and I'm actually starting to think Blake WILL win now. There seems to be a momentum that way for some prognosticators out there. However, I'm going to stick with Jordin...just because, yes, (and don't throw stones ) of the more mainstream marketability factors she possesses. Though maybe Blake can be the first artist to win 'AI' who gets to make a mainstream Techno-themed album.

One last thing to show the class of Melinda: On my Fox 10 o'clock news--they interviewed her right after stepping off the stage tonight. The first thing she said: "I'm just happy Jordin made it into the finale." They've obviously formed a huge bond there.

Good to see Elliott tonight--despite those veneers affecting his speech a little. He sounded good. And, yes, I wonder now if Kat will show up as a surprise to sing with Taylor again next week as they did last year. It'd be nice to see their performing chemistry again...considering it was never repeated after last year's finale.

That's what I was thinking.  You've got the gimmicky guy with the cute girl again this year.  Granted, Taylor & Katharine are even greater examples of gimmicky and Kat's more than just "cute" but...we're sort of following the same formula here.  And I think I called Melinda this year's Elliott somewhere in this thread.

I think the best thing about this.  We FINALLY have a winner that doesn't have some variation of a Southern accent.  I know, I know...Carrie's from Oklahoma & Kelly is from Texas.  Not technically the "South" but...Carrie's doing country and Texas is still South to me.

Also...the two finalists auditioned in Seattle.  Which they were promoting at the beginning of the season as THE WORST AUDITIONS EVER!  Strange how it all works out.
