Jordin, I believe has the most mainstream marketability with her very good vocals, her youth and her vibrant personality and I do think she ends up winning in the end. With a little more maturity in her voice I certainly believe she could have a LONG career in the music industry. She certainly has that emotional "cry" down pat in her voice when she sings.

Blake is the most innovative, unique contestant probably ever on AI but his style is not for everyone and to be honest sometimes with what he tries to do he hits a home run and other times like last night its more like a weak pop fly. Obviously, his contemporary vibe spin he puts on songs doesn't work for everything. I'm sure though if he made a CD of all original material it would do extremely well.

Melinda, on the other hand, is probably the smoothest, most technically "perfect" vocalist ever on AI. I mean every performance she gives she is usually almost dead on pitch on everything and she has enough belting ability to handle most any song. The problem is, I just don't know if she has enough of the "wow" factor to win this competition. She really doesn't exude much sex appeal and a lot of her performances can tend to come off as somewhat monotonous and boring. Maybe its just me, but I'm not sure her vocal tone would just jump out and grab you if it came at you from the radio. She certainly is super talented though and will do well regardless of the outcome.

I could agree with you on every point you mentioned. In fact, that would also be one of my assessments. However, there is one last voice inside my head telling me something valuable. Nobody has ever brought this up before so I may sound different to some of you. You see, AI is a show that pretends to capitalize on talent and yet commercializes the product. That is the disguise that I see happening whenever there is a delimna in judging or voting. It is a music show and yet music is that which is unfortunately compromised. Why? I don't think the greater majority of the voting public even knows what true talent is anymore. Their music knowledge is so "techno-philed", adulterated and filtered that they wouldn't even know how to appreciate music in the raw! I worry about the culture that is creeping into the music world and how demographics could command the outcome, and how the corporate world could take advantage of that culture for their own glory, in expense of the best musically talented souls. It's a shame.

Unless AI includes something else, i.e,"giving a speech", as a category before one could win as the american idol, it's still perceived as a music talent show.

Movie actors like Paul Newman, Jimmy Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall and Bette Davis make me want to live in the era they lived but I could have been just as inspired even now while I watch their work in films.

^^^ Mattsie - In response to your post, I think it's time for music to go "Back to the Basics."    Let's see how today's artists would do with just singing and a guitar accompaniment.  I remember dremomma's (Diane, the Kat family friend) AI profile stated she was amazed hearing Kat sing for the first time while her son played guitar in the living room.   Little did they know at that time that she would make it to #2 on American Idol.

But, I do believe that anyone out there trying to make it - should at least pass the "Back to the Basics" music test.  How would Paris Hilton sound at a coffeehouse?  YIKES, scary thought, but without all the fancy studio gadgetry and manipulation how would some of today's singers sound?  So, as Willie and Waylon sing it's time to get "Back to the Basics of Life," (in music that is).

I was reading the blog of Mo Rocca last night, and I learned a couple of other things there about AI. Read it here.

Co, thanks for keeping this thread alive. Back to the Basics in music  ----that's what AI should seriously look into. I watched this clip from Fox news - Joe Scarborough's interview with Carmen Rasmussen and the tone of that segment was not good for AI as a whole. It talked about AI as being I-DULL, and this year is the worst ever. I felt bad, naturally. They were chiding on Bucky Covington having a record, and that AI has deteriorated recently---that AI is no longer the special music show that it used to be during Kelly Clarkson's rise. Last year was AI's highest rating, and possibly, this year is their lowest. I could mix in my own thought with that and say that AI is no longer the show that showcases true talent. When Sundance left too early, I immediately thought america got it so wrong this year right away. Then when Lakisha left, I thought america got it wrong again. Now we are faced with 3 talented singers, and we know who they really are. I hope this time, america would get it right. The fun in AI must remain enjoying real talent, if this show has to move on. That's all.

Movie actors like Paul Newman, Jimmy Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall and Bette Davis make me want to live in the era they lived but I could have been just as inspired even now while I watch their work in films.

This is probably one of the better Top 3s we've had in all the seasons.

Funny you should say that Co, since though you are right on a pure vocal talent level, this season is proving to be a ratings disaster for Fox. Ratings have seriously floundered ever since Sanjaya was voted off. As I've mentioned many times in the past, these guys are b-o-r-i-n-g! And AI has done little to bring out their personalities with features/interviews/etc. Plus there's been really no cross genre rivalries like in the past,

So down to business. Who leaves this week? My thoughts are that without Kiki, the remaining three will split the vote pretty evenly. So it may turn out as a squeaker similar to last year. And make no mistake, they're all vulnerable. So I'm just going with my previous picks.

I'm just sticking with what I had at the beginning.  I think Jordin is safe this week but I wouldn't bet my life on it.  So it's either Blake or Melinda?  I said Melinda way back when so...either I'll be totally right or totally wrong on this one.

I like that idea about just having a week where people go out there with about as simple a set-up as possible.  Think the judges would have liked Kat singing "Me" like she did for Yahoo Pepsi Smash?  Or how she did "Mary Jane" in San Antonio?  That's Kat's magic...she doesn't need help.  She doesn't need a huge band or lots of tricks to sound wonderful.  In fact, the more simple the setup, the better she is.  SOTR, anyone?  Someone To Watch Over Me?

A lot of the time the Idol band is too loud I think and it forces the singers to thinking they have to shout sometimes.  Anyway...I really have no clue what to expect this week.  Anyone want to make guesses what songs Clive & the judges are going to pick for everyone?

IT is deff between blake and melinda. I SAID MELINDA BECAUSE SHE DOESNT HAVE THE COVER FACE AT ALL. SHE IS CUTE BUT DOESNT HAVE THE "IT" FACTOR WHERE BLAKE AND JORDIN DO. THEY BOTH HAVE THE VOICE, COVER FACE, AND THE "IT"

SO THERES MY PIECE ON IT....

My elimination pick...

Mary Katherine Gallagher!

Well, if you saw 'SNL' tonight...you'd get what I'm talking about with host, Molly Shannon. That was one of the funniest parodies of 'AI' done in a while. They finally have the little nuances of Ryan's patter down...

This week's elimination pick is going to be a challenging choice for me (and most of us)--but I think we could bet our homes that Jordin will be staying. It's eerie how she followed the same path I thought she would. And that means starting out so-so and then suddenly blossoming into a wonderful artist in the last month of the show. I've noticed that's a recurring pattern with others on 'AI'...and I suspected months ago that Jordin would get to that level toward the final stretch. You could just sense it somehow. She and Kat are going to be the most appealing stars in pop music in the next five to ten years. Ditto for Melinda in the AC categories.

So, as everyone else, it all comes down to Melinda or Blake going. Those two are going to nearly tie I predict on next week's show. Though Melinda seems to coast along--and DOES have a tremendous voting base for her that we don't see. She's never been vulnerable in going home. Only Blake's come the closest to going home a couple of times. That process probably won't change. Based on the judge song choices officially announced for each of them (I think the Clive picks are kept secret until at least Monday)--Blake will have to rethink what he does with his in order to stay in the competition. His performances the last two weeks were incredibly innovative--but ultimately creating two camps of liking it a lot or hating it. It makes you wonder where he can find a middle ground now in his performances. To beatbox or not to beatbox on a Police classic? It just goes to show you that being different from everybody else will lead to divisiveness in the public at large...

By just a hair:

SN: Gregoriancant

Eliminated on 5/16: Blake

(I may change this Monday night after we hear what the Clive song choices and personal picks are.)

Hey, Mattsie: Are we weird in wanting the best singer to win a singing competition? I am still holding out hope that will happen and Melinda will win Idol. There is really little point in watching the show when it was obvious last year and possibly again that singing counts for only a small percentage of the outcome? As you can obviously see, all my comments at this point are questions. I still maintain that Blake should have been eliminated last week, but no, we are not faced with the top 3 vocal talents. Only two good singers and a good gimmick performer.

Three reasons:
1) Aside from the middle rounders going early, we haven't really had a big shocker.
2) Dial Idol was interesting last week. Even if Melinda gets all of Lakisha's votes, it may not be enough.
3) My wife said at the beginning of the season that she thought Melinda would go early because America would support the contestants who needed the most help and Melinda will be successful with an "early release."

My personal choice would be for Blake to go this week. And I'd love to see Jordin win it all. But I'm pretty happy with anyone finishing in any order at this point.

I had some good discussions with my siblings on Mother's Day over who will make it into the Finale.  We're all torn on who should go because these three are so good.  Yes, Melinda and Jordin are the better singers, but Blake has brought something new and different this season that makes him just as worthy of making it to the finale.  I think "I Believe in You and Me," will get Melinda into the finale, especially if she nails it, I feel the goosebumps already.  I also think Blake's fan base will pull him through.   So, from a strategy standpoint and for the purpose of maybe winning the pool, I picked Jordin.  Gosh, this was a tough and painful decision.

Hi Co,
I think I'm really having fun with this game. Bill is for Blake to go, Joe is for Melinda, and you are for Jordin. Meanwhile, Spree,  zzyzx, Greg and I am also for Blake to go home next. And now the others have already expressed their opinions too. Wow.  Getting tougher by the day. But you are right about Melinda possibly nailing "I Believe in you and Me" and her going to the finale. I just don't know about Blake past Wednesday. We'll see how it goes. I wish we can all be correct.

Wow, Bcollan, I didn't know that the AI ratings were suffering this season, but it sure does make sense. Other than the general 'musicalness' of the show, there's just nothing particularly compelling about the contestants this year. I mean, I enjoy them, they've got talent and all, but... I think next year not only should the producers take more risk in finding singers with more distinctive personalities, but it may be time to bring in a fresh face at the judges' stand, too. If I had to pick a judge to replace, I'd say Randy. I kinda-sorta like the guy, but he's just dead weight this year. Pretty much anyone could blow him out of the water and add something new to the show next year.

Yeah, this is difficult. My quest is to pick someone who is actually going to be eliminated this time. I went from first place to the bottom of the barrel with my picks, first, because of the unpredictable Sanjaya factor and last week I picked Blake to get the boot, but he didn't. I still say he should be gone, with Kiki being in third spot. So, IMO this week Blake is my pick again. I can't in good conscience vote off Melinda to be realistic, and, if she goes, so goes my interest in American Idol. What kind of show doesn't invite a runner-up of Katharine's caliber to return when they had the 6th place finisher appear?

Those little vignettes about the contestants are what make the show "personal" and interesting.  I know almost nothing about Phil, other than he's in the Navy.  I had forgotten that he's the guy with the newborn.  Chris had a weight problem and played football - guess his singing talent just materialized overnight.  And what about Sanjaya?  Did we ever learn anything about him?  And we learned just last week that Kiki has no formal training - she just sings for her church.  What was Blake doing before Idol to support himself?  Is there any video of him performing?  (Remember the vids of Constantine and his band?)  I don't feel like I know any of these people.
