no one has really sparked my interest yet. They keep showing the crappy auditions. I'm ready for them to be over with.

I just watched the last episode of the audition ... I think Ebony (one of the 3 girls who came in with roller skates) will be in the top 12 and she has the chance to win this competition ... so far I think she has the best voice, control... everything.... she's pretty too ... She really stands out for me ...

Hmmmm ... another female winner this year? ;)

I'm just thankful the auditions are over. I don't really have a "stand out" contestant in mind just yet, but after next week people should be becoming apparent as finalists. The auditions produced slim pickings and they didn't televise all who made it to the Hollywood round.

I saw only Seattle audition. That was enough for me. The behavior of those billionaire judges was simply disgusting. Yeah, The One is European and therefore of course impolite piss-head bastard. So hate him. Yes? No, the whole thing just schtunk!

Think about that. Badly disabled person tried honestly to sing something. Why he was at least in? Yes, it was pitiful, even a bit funny - but the comments…Horrible.I guess people there in US just want kind of stuff and its making money, and hella lot its making!

Katharine was/is a t.w diamond from a bulk, but in AI5 I even liked those famous losers like Princess and that other damn good looking dark girl. She was very pretty and self-confident, but the singing... That was fun.

Did you notice in the Hollywood week episode last night, that Robyn Troup was in the group with Sundance? And she was eliminated in that round? I guess it didn't rock her confidnce any since she went on to sing with Justine Timberlake at the Grammys! During the Grammys my wife said that Robyn wouldn't cut it on AI and she was right!!

I have been watching it and what I personally feel is they are all so full of themselves. I know I shouldn't compare it to last year but I don't see any genuine people as of yet. I think last year just had some really, really just plain nice kids who touched your heart. Especially you know who.....ahh that is right Katharine. Something just missing this year, to me anyways.

I totally agree with the comments on the bad auditions.  It's actually becoming downright cruel, especially with the guy with the bug eyes and the heavy-set guy with his pants pulled up too high - you know they're going to get critcized, and you just cringe for them.   The pattern in these last two nites is they've shown 7 people who made it to Hollywood each nite, so we've seen 14 move on; however 17 made it in Minneapolis and 14 in Seattle, but out of that batch, we've only seen 50%.  So far no standouts in the first week, but next week could be different - Kat's audition was in the second week of the season.  I heard some good people came out of Memphis, so we shall see.  There's also Birmingham, New York and Los Angeles coming up - one would think some decent talent should come out of those auditions.

Yes, the manipulative patterns have become more noticeable this season. And we can thank Kat for exposing them and exactly how 'AI' works as a finely-tuned machine to manipulate viewers. Based on comments I'm hearing everywhere...most people are onto it all. Nevertheless, when you realize the two premiere nights were the highest-rated 'AI' in its history so far--you also realize that people are just accepting the bad things and enjoying it for what it is. It's become one of the most necessary of evils I think.

Despite the auditions being painfully awful as usual--I found myself laughing at some of them more than I have in the past. The last few years, I just stayed away from them until the Top 24 started. But you have to admit that the creepy red-haired guy (in red shirt no less) at the end--singing 'Bohemian Rhapsody' in that off-key high falsetto--was the funniest thing I've seen on TV in a while. Seeing Simon starting to fall out of his chair laughing helped make it even funnier.

Well, that takes me to another "manipulation" here that's either set up by the contestants themselves...or it's asked of 'AI' producers for entertainment value. And that's the truly awful singers KNOWING they're bad...but realizing they get a chance to be on national television to promote something else. I'm sure you noticed that mother/daughter team promoted a novella they wrote about 'AI'--complete with a Simon character in the book. You can only imagine that a million people went to their computers and Googled that book afterward. I didn't bother with it, but I bet that book will sell 100,000 copies now just because of that subtle little sales pitch. Can you imagine the convo between that daughter and mother beforehand? "You and I know you can't sing worth crapola...but we can sneak a little pitch for our book in there while pretending we're serious about your singing."

Also, look at some of the additional footage at the end of the auditions Wednesday. Some of those awful contestants were apparently "asked" to sing PCD's 'Don't Cha?' that they didn't do initially on their audition. That gives hints 'AI' asks these awful singers to do more funny stuff later that day just for the supposed entertainment value.

Other than subtle sales pitches--just being on television is enough for some people. I think some mistakenly think that the William Hung phenomena is still alive and well. Actually, no it isn't....not at all. Hung just rode a wave of novelty for a while until people realized that they were stupid beyond words for buying his albums.

I might join the pool later, Co, though I'm not sure I'm going to watch the auditions all the way through. We have two more weeks of that (don't we?)--and I'm not sure I want to see those all the way through until the competition actually starts. I say that, of course, and usually end up watching the auditions anyway.

More could be said along these lines. Two big issues: the editing process and the selection process. On editing: It's not that the singers were so much worse overall, it's that the producers totally played up the awful people (and the judges nasty comments). We got very little sight of the truly strong singers in the city auditions. I enjoy seeing the freaks as much as the next guy, but it was WAY out of balance--as if they decided that bad singers (with mean commentary) = good ratings.  On selection: having just finished watching the selection of the final 24, something seemed quite arbitrary or contrived this year about their decisions from Hollywood week forward. As Greg suggests, it seems there are calculations at work that are only partially related to talent and charisma. Some very odd decisions were handed down. The group that remains, at least in my eyes, is not too inspiring.

Like you guys said ... maybe it's because of the editing part that we haven't found 1 "appealing" contestant.. This year they really shows lots and lots of bad singer ...

After watching the top 24 ... hmmm ... I think we should have another great year of AI ... But I was really surprised to see some of the good singers did not make the cut ...

I think people really like Sanjaya Malakar, this years' fav contestant. But my personal favorites are: Jordin Sparks, Phil Stacey, Melinda Doolitle, Brandon Rogers and Lakisha Jones.

And oh, i like Gina and Antonella in the girls group. Thanks God, i still missed Kat everytime i watched the show, i missed seeing her kissed the judges, i missed that silly girl..

Agree, they're good but in the same genre... For me it's gonna be a bit boring...  And I think they choose some 'wrong'person instead of the good ones..
I love Blake when he's in Hwood week Group !

Kat hinted in some interview that she almost didn't make the top 24 because of her bulimia (which would have been totally crazy). So maybe some of the singers that we thought should make it through had a skeleton lurking...

At the end of the episode revealing the top 24, it was great to hear Kat's voice and song "I'm Not UR Girl" being played while the top 12 gals were being introduced! I couldn't possibly be the only one to notice that??? It was a great plug for Katharine's CD on National TV!

For me, nobody has stood out yet, not like Katharine did at the audition last year. Jordin Sparks has potential and will probably do OK if she doesn't let nerves get the best of her. I can't believe Robyn Troup didn't make it, but she will do better now anyway. I'm hoping to get more interested as the weeks progress, but I don't know....

As of now there is nobody that competes with AI5's final four contestants. The girls for me are not anywhere in the same league as Kat.

Of course we noticed!  There was at least one whole thread about it.

Too bad the plug didn't include who was singing for those fans who haven't bought the cd yet. And future fans.

I finally watched a a bit of AI 6 (the girls show) just to see. No matter what happens, it looks like Kat has a clear run for another year. NOBODY coming out of this years show is even close. Its been said before, but Kat is in a totally different league.

Oh, sure I was watching it, and who's up for a pool?  Let's see how accurate people are because I know people say they picked Kat out to be a contender at the beginning last year, but did they really?  I know I did, I totally remember Kat and Paris and picked them to be in the Top 12.  Also, ya'll gotta give the fresh crop a chance, they're will never be another Kat because there's only one Kat - so get over your bad selves.

Hmmm...I think I have a little proof...the following is my first post here at katharinefans, 2/25/06, after registering on Valentine's Day after Kat's first live performance

Hi, I'm Bill and I'm a Katharine-aholic! )

After being a total Carrie fan from the get-go last year, I was a bit depressed coming into season 5...
how could anyone compete with my girl Carrie???

But then I "met" katharine the first AI nite and immediatey fell in love! (figuratively, of course, I'm old enough to be her daddy) I'm on record predicting her to be in the top 3 from that nite, and now I'm not going to settle for less than #1! She's the real deal, a complete package, with the perfect looks, charm and pipes to be a block-buster American Idol champion. Go Katharine!!!

Bill

There will only be one Kat But, yeah the girls are just ok for me. I dont like the guys either.. they all kind of are bland. I only like Leslie Hunt, and Jordin Sparks for the girls, and Blake Lewis for the guys, but thats only because I think he is cute! LOL.. but idol this year is boring. Chris Sligh is annoying to me.

Chris Sligh has the best energy, and IMO Blake is the best looking of the guys. For the girls, I predict Jordin, Melinda, Sabrina and Stephanie should all be in the top 12. I think Gina has the biggest voice, but we will see what they can all do in the next few weeks to come. Antonella is nice looking but her performance was forgettable. In terms of singing, I think Blake and Brandon will probably be in the top 12, and if all the people I have mentioned make it to the top 12, it actually could be an interesting and maybe fun season. We (myself included) have to get over the fact that Katharine will not be there. She is an epidemic.
