I totally agree with the comments on the bad auditions.  It's actually becoming downright cruel, especially with the guy with the bug eyes and the heavy-set guy with his pants pulled up too high - you know they're going to get critcized, and you just cringe for them.   The pattern in these last two nites is they've shown 7 people who made it to Hollywood each nite, so we've seen 14 move on; however 17 made it in Minneapolis and 14 in Seattle, but out of that batch, we've only seen 50%.  So far no standouts in the first week, but next week could be different - Kat's audition was in the second week of the season.  I heard some good people came out of Memphis, so we shall see.  There's also Birmingham, New York and Los Angeles coming up - one would think some decent talent should come out of those auditions.

Yes, the manipulative patterns have become more noticeable this season. And we can thank Kat for exposing them and exactly how 'AI' works as a finely-tuned machine to manipulate viewers. Based on comments I'm hearing everywhere...most people are onto it all. Nevertheless, when you realize the two premiere nights were the highest-rated 'AI' in its history so far--you also realize that people are just accepting the bad things and enjoying it for what it is. It's become one of the most necessary of evils I think.

Despite the auditions being painfully awful as usual--I found myself laughing at some of them more than I have in the past. The last few years, I just stayed away from them until the Top 24 started. But you have to admit that the creepy red-haired guy (in red shirt no less) at the end--singing 'Bohemian Rhapsody' in that off-key high falsetto--was the funniest thing I've seen on TV in a while. Seeing Simon starting to fall out of his chair laughing helped make it even funnier.

Well, that takes me to another "manipulation" here that's either set up by the contestants themselves...or it's asked of 'AI' producers for entertainment value. And that's the truly awful singers KNOWING they're bad...but realizing they get a chance to be on national television to promote something else. I'm sure you noticed that mother/daughter team promoted a novella they wrote about 'AI'--complete with a Simon character in the book. You can only imagine that a million people went to their computers and Googled that book afterward. I didn't bother with it, but I bet that book will sell 100,000 copies now just because of that subtle little sales pitch. Can you imagine the convo between that daughter and mother beforehand? "You and I know you can't sing worth crapola...but we can sneak a little pitch for our book in there while pretending we're serious about your singing."

Also, look at some of the additional footage at the end of the auditions Wednesday. Some of those awful contestants were apparently "asked" to sing PCD's 'Don't Cha?' that they didn't do initially on their audition. That gives hints 'AI' asks these awful singers to do more funny stuff later that day just for the supposed entertainment value.

Other than subtle sales pitches--just being on television is enough for some people. I think some mistakenly think that the William Hung phenomena is still alive and well. Actually, no it isn't....not at all. Hung just rode a wave of novelty for a while until people realized that they were stupid beyond words for buying his albums.

I might join the pool later, Co, though I'm not sure I'm going to watch the auditions all the way through. We have two more weeks of that (don't we?)--and I'm not sure I want to see those all the way through until the competition actually starts. I say that, of course, and usually end up watching the auditions anyway.

I think they need new judges for American Idol. Paula is a disgrace and no role model, all Randy could do was laugh at people who thought they were actually good singers, and Simon trashed everybody. The first night it was Jewel who gave the best evaluations. She was fair and her critiques were constructive and musically-related. I think the judges are burned out with AI. Just my opinion.

I like it so far, but I wouldn't ever ever ever compare it to season 5. I don't think anybody could. The auditions have been horrible so far. I'm looking forward to watching the LA auditions. Wouldn't that be awesome if they aired the LA auditions on the day Kat's album releases?

This is my favorite part from Wednesday night. When that girl walked in chewing gum and Paula saids, "You know you can't chew gum in here." The girl takes it out of her mouth and saids, "Where do I put it?" Simon saids, "Just tack it on Taylor's face." LOL. That was so funny. He said something like that. I'm so glad they didn't let that Taylor wannabe go to Hollywood.

My new book, A New Beginning, is on online stores!! Buy it today at iuniverse.com, Amazon.com, or Barnes&noble.com!!!

Jordin Sparks is the next American Idol!!! Vote for Jordin!!!

I thought first two shows dragggged a bit. I think they truly wasted a little too much time with badgering the crappy singers. Usually the pace is a little better. I think the slow pace only accentuated the cruel, belittling antics of the judges. I do NOT think it’s any worse than they usually are, it’s just that we had time to REALLY see it this year.

Anyway, as for the talent, I have a couple of favs already, but I’m not blown away yet, like with a Kat, Kelly, or Carrie… those guys floored me right from point go. Maybe it’s because I am having another issue as I watch. I made the mistake of watching X Factor (dl’d from the UK)… there’s this girl Leona Lewis who is right up there with the best, and now, for some reason I keep thinking everyone I see just doesn’t have that kind of star quality or vocal. This kid was a real star throughout the series like Kat, Kelly and Carrie! I want someone like that, but maybe s/he won’t shine until the final 12 … like Kelly did…(well hers was top 10, but you know what I mean)

I like the guy with the sister. I like the Shakira look alike girl, not for her voice, for her personality… I like that girl with the very long boho style hair, I think her name is Sarah. Denise Jackson seems to have a Kellie Pickler type background story, and she also has “mad chops”…really sang that heck out of the Dreamgirls song. There are other favs, but I can’t remember them that much, so I guess they weren’t that “fav”…lol

A very very interesting point there, Greg. I think you're right! It is free marketing! 30 something million viewers.... CLEVER!
I agree with most of you. I think now the judges are really mean. Yes, they can critisize people's singing techniques.... but when they start to comment and critisize people's phisique ... well .. that's plainly MEAN! IMO, Simon is super mean when he commented on the big eyed guy in Seattle. Yup, it may be good for the ratings ... but it's still MEAN!
As for the contestants ... no one really captures my heart yet. The brother and sister are good. The 16 year old girl (reminds me of Lisa Tucker) with the big hair is also good. Shakira girl is also good. But really, I'm really hoping for better ones next week.

We know now that before any contestant performs before the "judges", he/she has already performed twice before the producers. So we also know that any really untalented folk who get to perform for the judges on TV for these preliminary rounds are there for one purpose only - to be humiliated in front of millions of people, to give the judges a chance to insult and disparage them. Hopefully, most of these realize it and are there for a laugh. I feel very sorry for the few who actually thought they had a chance.

American Idol is to a talent competition what "professional wrestling" is to a College track and field meet.

Does anyone here watch "professional wrestling"? Why not? Cus it's so fake?

On the other hand, last year did give us Katharine, so all is in balance in the Universe.
