I thought Mariah was a very caring, insightful and supportive mentor.Just watched a few of her songs on youtube and loved her duet,When You Believe, with Whitney(from the soundtrack of The King of Egypt)!I agree with the judges,David A did an exceptional interpretation of that song. What is fasciating that only minutes after Idol ended, the youtubers were all over this video, with rave reviews for David!!
Agree,Mattsie...there should be a less subjective judging system for a singing performance;as was instituted for figure skating recently!
Anyone else tired of Simon's food analogies?A hamburger without the burger and then with the burger, but without the onion/tomato...what is that?Or,as with Kat....apple pie with too much cream...... Give us a break Simon.....how about some professionalism?

My rankings for Mariah week, post-performance:
1. Jason Castro (usually can't stand this guy, but it was a smoldering performance)
2. David Archuleta (good vocal performance, but not great)
3. Syesha Mercado (technically proficient on a difficult tune, but lacked emotional connection)
4. David Cook (mumbled much of the lyrics)
5. Kristy Lee Cook (looked good and connected with the song, but it was boring and kind of simple)
6. Carly Smithson (lacked gravitas)
7. Brooke White (would've picked Carly last, but Brooke messed up on 2 fronts - piano-playing and singing)

'Note: When people (teens) buy iTunes, they buy those they could identify with, like David Archuleta and Jason Castro. After all, these two are 17 and 21 years of age, respectively. Now, these teens could be fans of the others who are 24 and 25 years old, thank you, but you know, I could sense that they are the ones that tend to make untoward remarks against them, anyway, if only to uplift the teeny choices. How are we to rule over these "hormonic craze" that plague AI? We can't, I guess. I hear you. My question: When can music be appreciated and judged a litle more fairly like in gymnastics or figure skating? Parameters like "degree of difficulty". Yes, once in a while Randy throws that in, but when it reaches Simon, I'm still waiting for him to say, "That's unforgettable"! No Simon, the boys didn't win tonight because all the while Carly was singing, you were thinking of Kelly Clarkson, and there was no male Kelly yet to compare the boys to. Unfair assessment in a Mariah Carey week. Boys get pimped all the time. Something about Simon and Randy that they can't be that overly swooned over by a female so easily, in fear of being misconstrued as too personal. Look at Paula, did you hear how she commented KLC? She goes..."Kristy Lee Cook, .....I'm blown away....." And, she's a female commenting a female.'

You mentioned gymnastics and figure skating, but it's interesting to note that the more glamorous title in those sports is women's champion, even though the men are more skilled in skating (and arguably so in gymnastics, too). So I think the situation with guy singers is analogous. What makes it seem more palatable is that the guys are stronger compared to past male contestants, and the girls weaker than previous females, even if technically the girls still beat the guys. If it were a pure singing contest, a female of the Mariah/Whitney/Celine/Christina school would win every time, but that would be boring to me. BTW, Paula's still got the hormonal thing going in middle age - she still favors the guys. (Did you see the way she hugged Michael last week?)

Am I wrong or did it seem like Brooke was visibly shaking while singing the bridge of "Hero"?

looks like the bottom 3 will be Carly, Syesha, and Brooke with Carly being safe, its a toss up between Syesha and Brooke to leave this week.

On another note: With all the hoopla about this AI7 being the best idol crop ever, I don't see how they compare to the final 6 of AI5.

Wouldn't it be great to see Kristy Lee and David Cook in the finals? American Idol could bill it as the "GREAT AMERICAN IDOL COOK-OFF"

I agree Brooke was visibly shaking. I think its been a emotional group. Sometimes David A looks scared and apparently doesn't eat the day of the show because of nerves. Kat had her moments, but came through when it was time to perform. David Cook looks not too sure at times. As for Carly, we have seen her emotions after MJ was voted off.

Kristy Lee seems to be always consoling the others and seems more comfortable. Syesha just acts like she is upset. Jason, well, I think he isn't sure what day it is and just goes with whatever.

Just my opinion. I like them all and wish them all the best.

Comments of the week:
Mariah Carey: "I got goose bumps when you sing Forever!  I do think that this could be a big hit for you.  I like how you sing it better than I with mine." (to Kristy Lee Cook)

Paula Abdul: "Kristy Lee Cook..... Oh my God....I'm like, blown away! ....I'm so proud of you ....very smart.... And, you look beautiful!"

Hi all,

I updated the Pool selections, sorry for the delay I work in the Accounting industry and was  slammed with the April 15th tax deadline - AMEN, it's over!   I didn't even have a chance to come over and add my selection, which I was going to choose Syesha anyway, going for those points . . . looks like a good percentage of ya think Ms. Mercado may be leaving us too.   I will have to watch the performances tonight, as I missed the show as I was out celebrating George Bush's payday, so I have no idea who is in jeopardy.  Okay, enough from me, time to get back to work.   Happy Humpday!

Kristy Lee Cook Sings Mariah Carey's Forever in Country Style on American Idol

Tonight was Mariah Carey night on American Idol. Kristy chose the song Forever. She put her country mark on it tonight. Mariah said Kristy gave her goose bumps when she listened to her.

I enjoyed the arrangement she sang. I think Kristy has a strong voice and is enjoyable to watch. She always looks beautiful and I am sure appeals to the country crowd.

I really didn't think Kristy had staying ability, but she has surprised me. The first couple weeks, I really expected her to be voted off the show. She has gotten better every week and I actually think she might outlast the other two girls.

With all that being said, I think that beating David Cook and David Archuleta will be very difficult. They have powerful voices and the ability to be very versatile. David Cook can sing ballads and rock while Kristy is mostly country. I think Kristy could end up in the top three.

Hey Amanda,

I like your take of the "COOK-OFF" thing, funny, because I was just reading that David Cook, besides being a singer, used to work as a bartender, and Kristy Lee Cook, worked as a waitress for 8 months! Now a sandwich was named after her! ha ha ha ...KLC actually headlined as a singer at a bar, called  "Cowboys", in Arlington, TX  for 2 years. I read these blogs about those people that actually knew KLC. Someone wrote that KLC and this woman-friend used to race with their horses on the field in Oregon and KLC was very, very good, beating her all the time. Wow, I really like to see KLC one day ride her horse. Maybe she'll produce a short video when she goes home, if she makes it to top 3. So, to Mr & Miss Cook - for the finals? You said it first.

Funny again because Kat is a fine dancer and swimmer and I've always wanted to see her in action. As you can tell, I like female singers who are active in sports (identifying myself with I guess). I think the coolest girl is the one who loves the outdoors, the animals, and very active in sports,  and still have time for music because of a natural talent. And, on top of it all, is gorgeous! WOW!

LMAO, Misty.  Spot on.  I think they're all pretty likeable, too, but it was fun to read your take on their personas.  Syesha seems more reserved than she does upset, which hurts her in the competition.  I think she was the only contestant who didn't hug Mariah Carey.

Well, I guess I'm not in touch with the AI voting audience this year. By my ears, KLC was the best girl last night. I hated Brooke, and wasn't terribly impressed by Carly. Not to mention being bored by David A, and just not getting Jason. So, the Cooks were the only ones "cooking" for me last night. But America voted...and, as Ryan said, there must have been too many Cooks in the kitchen. Too bad, I was starting to think a Cook vs Cook finale would be quite tastey.

KRISTY LEE LEFT AT HER BEST! She was grateful and with humor. In tears, she sang to Simon and held his hand. Goodbye, Kristy Lee. You're so lovely and unforgettable! --mattsie
