BOSTON --Ayla Brown is wasting no time moving "Forward" after her experience with "American Idol."

Just hours after her contractual obligations expired with the Fox talent contest, Brown signed a CD recording contract Thursday with Double Deal Brand Records. Brown, 18, made it to Hollywood with "Idol" and finished 13th.

Brown says in keeping with the next chapter in her life, she is calling her new CD "Forward." Her debut single, "Know You Better/I Quit" will be released Sept. 12, with the CD being released nationally Oct. 17.

Brown said she helped write two songs on the CD, including "Falling Into You," about a first love. In "Thanks to You," she sings about "succeeding and following your dreams and basically thanking all the people who have been by my side basically my whole life," she said.

"We all kind of put our creative minds together," Brown said in a telephone interview Thursday from the recording studio in Pawling, N.Y. "I'm a beginner, a newcomer in the industry. I want to show what I have to say a little bit."

The CD will include tracks written by Grammy Award winners Diane Warren and Tommy Sims, among others.

Brown's contract is for multiple discs, said studio head Wayne Laakko. Artists who sign with Double Deal have a partnering relationship and receive a percentage of the profits, depending on sales.

"There is no real value, it depends on how the record does," said Laakko.

Laakko described the flavor of the Wrentham native's album as a "pop record with a guitar-driven rock edge. Kind of like a Kelly Clarkson," he said, referring to the first winner of the "American Idol" contest.

Brown needs to move forward quickly on the first recording: she is due to begin her freshman year at Boston College in a couple weeks. She started recording immediately after signing the contract.
