'Cutting it close'

Former 'American Idol' finalist gives concert in the Northwest before taking maternity leave

Laura Marble     July 25, 2007

American Idol finalist Crystal Stark has led a crazy life this past year speaking at school assemblies, acting as deejay for a radio station, hosting a TV show, writing for a newspaper, signing autographs and appearing on the Today Show, the Tonight Show and everything in between.

But she and her husband agree it’s time she slows down.

After all, she’s seven months pregnant. Before the 25-year-old Tucsonan declares a hiatus on strenuous singing, she will appear at Dove of Peace Lutheran Church on July 28 to give one last performance.

“I’m cutting it close,” she said.

The church’s “Jazz Under the Stars” concert will showcase Stark singing jazz standards with perhaps a few ballads and pop tunes thrown in, she said. Gospel music is not in the plans, though “I think I naturally have a hint of Gospel in my voice because I grew up singing in a church.”

Dove of Peace Church has long offered classical music to gatherers on Sunday mornings, and in 2004, it started a free concert series as a way of offering fine music to a broader community.

“We believe the arts have the power to elevate the human spirit,” said Eric Holgan, the choir director.

The following year, the congregation added a more casual summer jazz concert to the mix to lift spirits during the months when the Northwest generally quiets down. The church promotes visual art, too, with a art gallery that showcases local work — whether religious or secular — at no expense to the artist.

The annual jazz concert is set in a brick courtyard with a centerpiece flower garden when weather permits, and so far, it has. Wine, cheese and other more child-friendly offerings are served free of charge.

This year’s performer cared about singing long before her ranking as one of 44 final contestants in the 2006 American Idol contest won her national recognition.

“I don’t know how I could survive without music,” Stark said. “When I was little and would get mad about something, I would just go outside and start singing, because it made me feel better.”

But last year, the performer’s singing did more than soothe. It opened up opportunities.

After Stark performed on Fox 11 news, the television people asked her to host “My Tucson.” After she made an appearance on-air, the Mega Oldies 106.3 people asked her to work as a deejay. And a job blogging about American Idol for the Arizona Daily Star also fell in her lap, too.

In addition, bookings for her band began cluttering her calendar.

“We were in high demand, which was nice, because we had been struggling for so long,” she said.

A promotional tour with American Idol runner-up Katharine Mcphee got Stark on the sets of national shows including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Today Show with Matt Lauer and company, the Ellen DeGeneres Show and Live with Regis and Kelly.

These days, Stark leads a quieter life as a church musical director who also gives private voice and piano lessons from her home.

She’s thinking about using her University of Arizona degree in a year or so to teach school. Mostly, though, she’s thinking the thoughts of a pregnant mom — hoping her baby will have good health, a nice disposition and (please, please) a killer singing voice.

And if you’re wondering, it’s a boy.

We are definitely working together -- working on a record together. She sings so magnificently, it's just amazing -David Foster-
