Katharine's "Who Wants to Live Forever" is ranked the ninth best performance out of all Top 8 weeks in AI's history, according an AI fansite on BlogSpot. Kat is also cited in many of the earlier week countdowns.

That's great validation for her on that performance--especially when we heard she did it vocally perfect earlier in the evening during the dress rehearsal...then had to do a second take. But, as we said in the thread in Kat Chat reminiscing about this performance last year, what's imperfect can actually lead to a more "perfect" performance. It brought out more of a vulnerability element in Kat with that strain on the high notes. And, of course, Kat looked amazing along with the production values. It was truly a moment when Kat showed she could take Broadway by storm if she wanted to.

I'm just glad so many people keep citing that as one of her best performances there. It seems to grow in stature as time goes on. Kat conveyed the powerful lyrics with a real emotional intensity...and people connected with that on a deep level. I remember the reactions on the 'AI' board last year the night she performed it. Most people said they were brought to tears when she recited those final haunting lines of the song. So, undoubtedly, the people voting it in remember that emotional reaction.

We all remember forever performances that bring out strong emotions. I wager to guess that Kat's performances on 'AI' will be remembered for those kind of reactions more than any artist before on the show or in future seasons...

This guy is definately a McPhan, he's picked a Kat performance as one of the ten best in the Semis, Top 11, Top 9 and Top 8 SO FAR!

Here's his comments on the performances.

Best SemiFinals

#10. Katharine McPhee, "Since I Fell For You" (Season 5)

Although she was dressed rather plainly in jeans and a top for her first Semifinal appearance, the effortless way Katharine handled the runs on this Barbra Streisand tune made it clear she was gonna be a contender.

Ten Best Top 11

#6. Katharine McPhee, "Come Rain or Come Shine"
Now that her CD has been released and she is trying to establish herself as a current pop artist she seems to be modeling herself after, of all artists, the Pussycat Dolls, but as far as I'm concerned Katharine is never more of a star than when she is singing old school torch songs, like this Judy Garland gem. Looking sensational and sounding as good as she ever did, Katharine was truly glorious in this performance. Perhaps on her next CD she'll realize where her strengths lie and return to this kind of music.

Ten Best Top 9

#8. Katharine McPhee, "Bringing out the Elvis"
I wasn't sure how Katharine was going to fare during country week in Season 5 -- she didn't exactly have much of a twang in her voice, so song choice was crucial for Ms. McPhee. In wisely choosing this soul/country tune, she brought some sass and attitude to the proceedings, and proved that she's capable of singing just about anything.

Ten Best Top 8

#9. Katharine McPhee, "Who Wants to Live Forever" (Season 5)
Supposedly this was the song Mandisa was supposed to sing had she not been kicked off the previous round, but it's hard to imagine anyone else other than Katharine wrapping her golden vocals around the soaring Queen tune. Again, not Katharine's best of the competition, but certainly worthy of a spot on this list.
