2 big things with your comparison. 1 Grace was a MUCH BETTER singer than Gina, who I do like, Grace was one of the best female rockers of all time. And second Grace was SO MUCH more attractive than Gina. Grace was one of the true crushes of my youth. And it was one of the great thrills of my life when I met her back during the Starship days in the 70's.
Gina did have a bit of a Grace Slick-vibe, but I agree with you Bill, Grace's is definitely a better singer. That's cool that you met Grace in the 70s during their hey day. We definitely need some more good quality rocker chicks, enough of these new pop chicks. Gina also remind me a little of Pat Benatar, although Pat is a much stronger singer. So, I think there's an open market right now for Gina and she should look at fronting a band, maybe she could call it "G Force."
On another note, now that you mention Jefferson Airplane/Starship, they also had two awesome male singers - Marty Balin (in the Airplane years) and Mickey Thomas (Starship). Both Marty and Mickey had awesome, kick-ass voices - AI needs to search for more male voices like them, and add Steve Perry to the mix. All future male AI contestants need to learn a few from those legends. Phil's got the range, but unfortunately for him, he lacks the "it" factor.
We can't be talking about the same Grace Slick!!!! ????? I met her frequently during my DJ years and while she did have 1 or 2 good years (1967-68) she wasn't what I call a "true" singer. She sounded great in the studio, but 'live' was another STORY!!!!! Frankly, I got tired of her off-key, drunken and hoarse performances and stopped going to her concerts, even when it was in my best interests to be there for the radio station.
Grace was a pretty tough cookie too... and frankly I was a bit scared of her!!!!
Gina seems like the real deal to me. Sings well, has a vibe that is definitely different from your normal AMIDOL contestant... She should go far.
Please don't be upset by my Grace Slick observations. They are just my observations. If you liked and like her, that is fine by me. And don't get me wrong, the Airplane/Starship put out some killer LP's (that's vinyl records for you that weren't around before CD's)... I'm mainly commenting on her live performances and my dealings with her on the radio...
