I just heard a pre-release copy of the new Jane Monheit CD due out in April entitled "Surrender".  Knowing that Katharine's version of SOTR was influenced by Monheit's version, I felt that many Kat Fans would enjoy Jane's new CD as well.

It's a nice mix of Ballads and Bossa Nova songs  It should be on the shelves either in late April or early May.  Highly Recommended.

Interesting news--and she seems to be churning out CD's about every year now. Each album gets better and better, too, in my mind.  I was never interested in her recordings until the last couple of years.

You may or may not know that Kat mentioned Jane Monheit as a vocal influence on a Top 40 radio station last summer during her post-'AI' media blitz. At the time, she quickly swept that under the rug and actually apologized for bringing up a jazz singer on Top 40 radio. I guess I can't blame Kat when people who listen to Top 40 care nothing about jazz singers and would consider it blasphemous that a Top 40 singer would be influenced by one. That's always bothered me a little...but, since then, Kat's come out and mentioned her again recently in Rolling Stone magazine. They published Kat's playlist of what she was listening to currently, and she placed Jane's version of Joni Mitchell's 'A Case of You' in the middle of Fergie and all the other Top 40 songs you'd expect. Kat just gives little dibs and dabs showing the breadth of her musical tastes in publications that never mention those artists. And that's the best way to approach it to get people who ordinarily wouldn't listen to that music to give it a try.

Yes, that 'OtR' fiasco with Jane was overblown, frankly. That wasn't Kat's fault anyway--and merely the arrangers on 'AI.' Though you can tell Kat's learned a lot from Jane...especially in managing your vocal purity. Kat's fortunate, however, in that her own voice exceeds the tonal beauty of Jane's if maybe not so much in control. Add to that, Kat's taken the art of tonal beauty in voice again and applied it to assembly-line pop music that's used to having mediocre singers sing them. Kat bringing back a little of classic singing while still staying fresh and hip is what makes her so appealing now in the music industry.

Now Jane needs to do a jazz version of 'Open Toes'--and the gaps in the music universe can finally be mended.

Thanks for your thoughts about Jane. I was almost aftraid to mention her new CD because of the SOTR fiasco. But, I figured there would be at a few in this forum that would appreciate the info. I agree completely about the differences in Kat and Jane's voices. Jane's got a touch more control, but Kat has simply got the best tonal quality of any singer in the business right now.

I would love Kat to put out a Jazz CD someday, but in the meantime her present CD does quite nicely. And a Jazz version of 'Open Toes' would certainly be possible as Jane has almost as flexible a voice as Kat, and can sing all types of music.

Another of my 'faves' is about to or has released (I have to look at my release notices) a new CD (in Canada only, I believe) is Holly Cole. She is not too popular anymore, but is another "VOICE" that I certainly do appreciate.

Holly Cole is still quite popular in Canada. She will be appearing at the major Jazz Festivals this year, in June I think. Her new self-titled Cd has recently been released.

It just amazes me why she doesn't have some kind of deal in the US!!!!  She used to, but no longer.  Since her new CD is not available at the brick and mortar stores in the US, I didn't know if her new CD was out or not.  Luckily, I'm still on her list so she graciously (or "her people") sent me a pre-release copy awhile back.  Another good release
