I promised myself I wouldn't get all crazy like I did last year for Kat, but I'm really lovin' Blake Lewis this year. We need to keep voting for him, because we have all seen that the worst doesn't always go home. I was thrilled to see someone sing Jamiroquai on AI, I've been a huge fan for years now and I think Blake is one of a kind.

Blake is great. He is unique, has his own style for sure. I'm picking Blake and maybe Melinda for the finale.

Hey jnd7723,  I'm in love with Blake!   I didn't think I'd get into anyone yet, but I really, really dig this guy.  I love everything about him, I want him to win.

zzyzx - I also predict a Blake-Melinda finale.

Blake/Melinda finale. It's just HAS to be. Of course Melinda has the better voice, but Blake is just so unique and special. He's exactly what america needs. Totally fresh.

100% Blake fan here.

No way would I change my allegiance to Katharine for anyone from season 6, but I love Melinda's pipes, Lakisha too. I really like Gina's edginess and find Blake interesting. I will feel much better about American Idol in general after Sanjaya is eliminated.

Blake owned the stage tonight. Melinda and Jordin may have better voices, but Blake (I swear to you) is gonna end up the one who sells the most records when all is said and done. He's just awesome to watch.

That was one heck of a risk singing 'Time of the Season'--especially that famous high note that he pulled off...though with some effort (as it would for any singer). I have to say that Blake is a master at picking songs that have either been forgotten or ones that are outside the fringe...yet still mainstream. 'TotS' has been played to death on commercials recently. There's something about that song, though, that still sounds contemporary. If no one knew it was from the 60's, they'd think it was from a later era. Nevertheless, Blake took it to an even more contemporary level that made it a moment of originality if not necessarily the best vocal performance. And watch eBay soon for 'Blake Beatbox Spit.'

It's going to be interesting to see how well he translates on CD when he inevitably gets a recording contract. I agree that he'll likely finish third or fourth (I'm agreeing on #3 right below Jordin and Melinda) and probably get a recording contract at a prestigious label. As with Taylor, however, he's better to watch perform rather than sing. I feel for those performers who work better as live acts rather than focusing on their voice in a recording studio. It's obvious Jordin and Melinda are made for the recording studio. Blake should just put out a DVD of his live show. Ditto for Taylor who's obviously suffering right now because people don't want to just hear his voice.

It makes you wonder if that's a future viable option in live performers rather than just the usual recording contracts. Concert DVD's sell just as well as albums do, and that should be an alternative career trajectory to those great performers who work better being seen rather than heard.

but you forget the technical wizardry behind the scenes in recording studios. With all the technology out there, mixed with Blake's mastery of beatboxin', well...who wouldn't want to HEAR his cd?

^Well, the only issue with that is that most of the listening public are on to the studio wizardry and are tiring of it pretty fast. A lot of people (and I do mean A LOT) are starting to crave artists who really can sing without the aid of the self-tuners and all the other digital enhancements that turn artists into near robots. Though Kat has some studio enhancements on her debut album...it's mostly all about the purity of her true voice. A lot of other singers who are more about voice are making inroads now--and subsequently becoming the most respected performers out there. Corinne Bailey Rae and John Legend are just two out of a growing list who don't need any digital manipulations.

Saying all that, that's not to say that Blake doesn't have a very good voice. He really does...though I just meant that I'm not sure it'd be a voice you want to hear on a CD for years and years as we enjoy in Kat. He's a true stage performer as Taylor is.

Maybe I underestimate how listeners still think out there, though, and they'd still put up with a digitally enhanced album. After all, 'AI' does cater to the teen crowd. They really don't care about studio tricks. The people I mentioned above are mostly ones who've heard it all for a long time now. You know, the ones old enough to remember Whitney Houston. Back then, if you sang off-key on an album, they'd do multiple retakes until they got it right. The self-tuner probably saves money and time for producers now.

Yeah, hearing Blake beatbox on a single could work. It'd have to be the perfect song, though, written by someone who understands where he's coming from. I'd rather hear that in the Top 40 right now rather than some Hip-Hop out there that's sounding kind of derivative of late.

you must not be a fan of techno music then like i am. Studio wizardry is what's its all about. If you think some artists don't have anything done to them on a studio album, well...you're sadly mistaken. It's just like a picture in a magazine. No matter how good looking you are, the picture is 100% of the time touched-up. It's just common knowledge now.

the best use of studio wizardry is the use of the vocoder. Cher's "Believe" used it, and it got her a #1 worldwide smash. Madonna uses it too, and it creates this futuristic, robotic craziness that's not tiring at all. I think it's the coolest thing ever! Purity is cool, too, but there is a different audience for that. Blake falls into the techno audience, so naturally, using tricks and vocoders and stuff like that is probably right up his alley, and mine for that matter. We just have different tastes, thats all.

^I usually listen to everything--though Techno isn't at the top of my list for sure.

But I get your point about Techno needing the use of those studio effects just to suit its audience. Yeah, I remember the use of the vocoder in Cher's 'Believe.' That's actually a pretty good effect for some things...and it's used a lot even now in a lot of recordings (probably too much).

While I'm more for natural voices, I understand that there's a certain demographic that expects it in certain types of music. That may be why Blake wouldn't fit in with 'AI' and better to go elsewhere. Even Simon probably doesn't get that genre at all and wants something that's straight-ahead Pop rather than a specialized genre. I'd fall over and die if 'AI' ever produced a Techno type of album from a winner on there. As long as the show's on the air--they'll be catering to the most mainstream demographic level. I'm not sure a Techno album would sell millions through 19E anyway...and I'm sure some Techno fans find 'AI' not worth their time.

Anyway, interesting discussion on all of this. Seeing how Blake could be marketed will obviously be a challenge for him, his management...and 'AI' in the off-chance he wins. When you're something different...you sometimes have to pay the price of being that way. In my own creative projects, I understand how that works. In music, it's tougher...and you have to find that balance between mainstream and overly creative. For the most part, Blake's found that balance on the show though...based on the ability to be seen live every night that you don't get with a recording contract.

but let me just say this...

Madonna didn't get to where she is right now because of her voice, or how she sounds on a cd. She's the greatest performer on Earth! Plus she was/is an original, a smart business woman, and STILL has great sex appeal. Don't be too certain that just cuz you don't think Blake has the best voice, does that mean he won't sell records. Just imagine Blake's first video, how hot that will be. Using his image, his moves, his charisma and sex appeal (just like M)...along with an above average voice.....THAT'S what sells records and creates longevity.

I get what you are saying, but one Can hardly compare Blake with Madonna. Blake has his own style and no doubt will do well as a performer. These days, all studio production is done by software and not live musicians. No matter what the genre, there is usually a synthesizer and drum machine. The mixing and mastering of a track is the real determination of the eventual sound.

well yea, you can't compare them. She's above all the rest. I'm merely saying that someone with an above average voice, coupled with charisma and sex appeal goes A LOT further than just having a good voice. We'll see how it all plays out. I'm excited for it.
