TrivialTV came across a recent trademark filing by FremantleMedia that will likely be of interest to future American Idol applicants. FremantleMedia, the company behind American Idol, filed a trademark application for “Idol Academy” on December 20, 2006. FremantleMedia wants to protect “Idol Academy” for use as a “performing arts camp.”
Could it be that after listening to thousands of horrible singers apply for American Idol year after year that Simon Cowell and company are finally going to do something about it? Imagine a Summer School camp where wannabe American Idol singers could get instruction from American Idol vocal coaches. Would graduation consist of live performances in front of American Idol judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Paula Abdul?
Of course, there are thousands of trademark applications filed every year that never actually wind up materializing, but an “Idol Academy” doesn’t seem that farfetched of an idea. Given that 100,00+ people auditioned for American Idol 6, FremantleMedia probably wouldn’t have any problems finding student to fill an Idol Academy or even several Idol Academies scattered across the United States.
The trademark application also covers usage for a website relating to performing arts camp, an online computer game, entertainment services in the nature of a television reality program, and various types of clothing. What would an Idol academy be without an official school uniform and its own accompanying reality TV program?
Ok so after this article, I was wondering: if this ever came to be, I wonder how it would be organized. If Simon, Paula, and Randy were involved, whose to say that they couldn't invite 'guest teachers' such as former Idol contestants to provide insight and assistance to participants. I think it would be really interesting to see someone like Kat working with others on a show of this sort. She seems very child-friendly and willing to give what she can when necessary. I would love to see it all come to pass... who knows though when, if ever, it will get up on its feet.
