"Idol" finalist McPhee eyes January for album

Wed Dec 6, 2006 9:36pm ET19 By Jonathan Cohen

NEW YORK (Billboard) - "American Idol" runner-up Katharine McPhee is eyeing a January 30 release for her RCA debut, tentatively titled "Never Saw It Comin'."

The set primarily features production from Timbaland associate Nate Hill; other contributors include Babyface, Kara Dioguardi and Ryan Leslie, although McPhee was unsure if his cuts would wind up making the album.

"It's rhythm pop," McPhee told Billboard.com of the album's sound. "It's not like really R&B or really poppy, but there are a couple of tracks that are really good for the 'American Idol' fans who voted for me and knew me as the 'Over the Rainbow' girl."

As for the significance of the tentative album title, she said, "I never saw this coming into my life as big as it did, and you never saw this kind of a record coming. You thought I was going to make a Streisand record."

Having rushed from the "American Idol" summer tour right into the studio, McPhee has yet to line up roadwork for 2007. "I would love to tour, but it will probably depend on how the record does. If nobody buys the record, nobody's going to want to see me live," she said with a laugh.

McPhee's post-"Idol" debut single, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/My Destiny," peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.
