I watched as much of this as I could sit through. I never used to think of myself as a prude, but I just watched Nelly Furtado on the Teen Choice Awards singing an uninspired song about promiscuity, after which she sweetly asked everyone who was sexually active to please protect themselves, yesterday Melissa Etheridge told concert goers "The drunker you are, the better i sound!" and before that, Madonna yelled to a too-quiet crowd "Come on, you lazy (unprintables), SING!" Well actually Etheridge was kind of funny, but all the rest of them, including the 1-1/2 hrs. of TCA, turned me off. Maybe if Promiscuity had even been a good song, that would have helped, but it was loud and monotonous. I guess I'm just getting old. If that's what being a pop star is all about, I hope Katharine turns into something else.

Groucho,

Well, it is the Teen Choice Awards.  I mean, have you turned on a pop radio station lately?  It's really pathetic the music and unsubstantial lyrics that are being blasted out to our next generation.   I agree, I do hope Katharine's new album will look towards a higher standard.  I feel sure it will.  I can't picture her singing Nelly's song!  LOL.  Sorry you had to suffer through that.  Did Katharine win?      I missed it.

^No, lyp-synching Rihanna won.

I didn't really expect Kat to win, but Carrie at least. She can sing live...
"I think it was the summertime when I laid eyes on you. I didn't even know your name...The boy you never wanted just steals your heart..."--Kat McPhee, Love Story

"4 walls and no you. The silence in this room is so loud...wow"--Kat McPhee, I Lost You

"I didn't see the crash that burnt the bridge, didn't see the missile that sank my loveship down..."--Kat McPhee, Dangerous

"Wanting you to be wanting me, no that ain't no way to be...You never were a friend of mine..."--Kat McPhee, Over It

"No more lonely nights to hurt me, no more tears left to spare, no more reasons to be unhappy. You threw them all up in the air..."--Kat McPhee, Each Other

I hate it! Rihanna sucks!! I am a teen and I don't like her but I guess a lot of teens do. She is so untalented and her performance was trying to be off the top and iconish, but in all actuality it was not in the league of being a memorable perofrmance. When she sings it sounds like a cat is dieing which by the way she doesn't sing live!! She was lip-synching and all of the stars who lip synch use the excuse that "there is no way they can sing and dance at the same time" well then you really shouldn't be a performer if you can't learn to do that. Teens now a days like "High School Musical" which really makes me sick.i can't stand that movie. If I see it I will probably throw something at the tv. And thats another thing I don't get, Teens LOVE High School Musical and all the songs are talking about god things and good morals and then they LOVE Rihanna who sings about being unfaithful to her boyfriend and sex all the time! I JUST DON"T GET IT!! And I know Kat will never do anything like this and she will set a higher standard, but the sad part is probably the teens that like all that stuff probably won't like Kat because they don't understand what a good performer is. There are American Idol performances that are better than what Rihanna did tonight!! I just don't get it and I am through with trying to get it! Teenagers in todays society FLAT OUT SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't watch all of it because I figured Katharine couldn't possibly be there with the tour. No, actually I don't listen to current pop music, mostly oldies and jazz or if I can get the Windsor
classical station to come in, that sometimes. Out of sheer curiosity, and because it was right there on the screen when I signed in to my ISP, I clicked on Paris Hilton's new album and listened to a short sample of various cuts. Appalling. It's all electronics and fakery. The last Aguilera song I heard (also possibly my first--I'm REALLY out of it) sounded much the same way, although I have been repeatedly assured that she really can sing when she wants to. I know these kids didn't invent sex, or rebellion, or bad taste, but still, the whole thing just struck me as trashy. I mean, you can be sexy without being sleazy. Any McPhan knows that.

Windsor Ontario or are you talking about the
Queen's residence? I didn't know she had her own classical radio station...

"you can be sexy without being sleazy"

Well said. That is why Katharine is such a beautiful and  welcome change.

Teenagers in todays society FLAT OUT SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Straight from the heart of one of America's youth. Do I hear a collective 'Aye?' or just a groan at the sign of frustrating reality?

Well, I don't think all teenagers suck. Believe it or not, there's a lot of them getting into better quality of music lately. The TCA's just want to create the illusion that ALL teens are listening to el crapo musico. The kids who voted on the TCA's are likely just a minority in the total population of America's teens. Nevertheless, I agree that the stuff that gets on the top of the charts makes you sit and puzzle over what in the heck's going on with musical taste for those under 20.

If we deal with reality, it's nothing but media influence. It harkens back to the marketing concept of memes (Memetics) and how you can take a product, market it in the right way--all the way to the point where everybody has to have it. Read the bestselling book 'The Tipping Point' and you'll understand what I'm getting at here. You can be sure the behemoth music execs out there know this process inside and out. And they use it to make artists that really aren't talented sell so well. It's a domino process of everybody else buying what the next person has. Teens go through the process of having to fit in with their peers. That means buying whatever their friends have to feel like they fit in. They're just sitting ducks to the memetic system of marketing.

I didn't tune into the TCA's this year. I have in the past, but just find them annoying most years. And I somehow knew that Kat wouldn't win here. True talent seems to get the boot in the memetic world too. That's even more frightening of a scenario--when true talents like Katharine can actually be prevented from getting to the top by media influence and the music industry. This all explains the mystery (as from kml above) of why some teens are perplexed when Kat can't get ahead of much lesser talents such as Rihanna.

In a way, this is one reason why our own marketing of Kat works. We can use our own memetic system--despite being outnumbered by the music industry and their power.

Not that Kat needed a giant surfboard to go in her room. And I hope Kat will find the balance she needs in the pop world so she truly can outsell all the other lesser talents that are raking in millions of dollars. It can be done if things get balanced just right. Unfortunately, the music industry decides who's going to get the most marketing and who won't based on the process I already mentioned. All Kat can do is make the best music she can and not compromise herself as an artist. She has more than enough fans to make her highly successful anyway in any genre she chooses to do.

Edit: Groucho is right on the money. The 'sex sells' mantra, though, still pervades...and is also a part of the marketing process I mentioned above. It seems culture is pretty much decided by that process everybody should understand better to prevent it from affecting your buying choices.

Well all of you pretty much nailed my sentiments.  I recorded the show and skipped through it to see if Katharine won (or even Carrie...I'd been fine with that).  Rihanna is so bad...well, I won't say that.  I don't mind that one song the "la, la, la" one.  But that other one when she actually tries to sing is just brutal.

This is my biggest fear for Katharine.  Now I don't think that she'll allow it (if she has a choice) but that the record execs think that they have to do whatever to Katharine to sell her.  I realize that she'll have to be a little more "modern" or whatever and won't be able to do a lot of the stuff she did so well on Idol but...I just hope that they let her do what she does best within that "modern" context.  Katharine's elegant, Katharine's classy and Katharine can sing beautifully.  That should be plenty enough.  If America doesn't get that...it is totally their loss.
"I saw Katharine McPhee when there were about 12 contestants left on American Idol. She blew me away. I loved her grace, her style, her poise, her voice and her hair! I wanted her to be the face of Sexy Hair because she represented everything that I had in my head for the brand: youth, beauty, talent, class, a young sophistication, and sexiness." -- Jim Morrison, CEO of Sexy Hair Products.

I am with you.... there's much to say about the music choices of teens nowadays... but I tell you, if and when Paris Hilton's album will become #1 in the charts -- then I'd really believe that the American teenagers' taste of music (incl all moral values), have all gone down the drain!

I liked Jessical Simpson when she was starting in the business.. she had that air of innocence that Britney lost and esp. Christina didn't have... but she, like most of those who are in the business, jumped on the bandwagon of "sex sells".....  too sad considering that she came from a Baptist background and her father WAS a minister (the saddest part)....

I do hope that Kat decides to make a difference and that she will not fall into the trap of fame and $$$.   I like her the way she is now.

hey. im a 13 year old teen and i HATE paris' singing. id never in my live buy her CD. anyone these days can make a half decent album because all this technology in recording. its so stupid. i know a good voice when i hear one.. and im telling you Katharine... she is so much more than a good voice. she has the most beautiful voice i have ever heard. and i love the girl. but i have to say-- the majority of teens today have the worst taste in music, EVER.

I agree with you all about Paris. I don't believe we will ever see her sing while promoting her record, maybe lip sync. Like you said she needs the recording technology for her songs. She was on the Today Show and I thought she would sing but didn't happen. I really don't think she can sing, act or write (her book was mostly pictures according to Jay Leno). That is just my opinion but others may feel differently which is OK. She is rich though!

I figured either Carrie or Rhianna would win. I'm sure Katharine will get some nominees next year, for probably more awards than just Teen Choice.

I must admit that I watched the whole thing (with half an ear), just so I could see the grand finale......the debut of K-Fed!

I was prepared for the worse but..........it was even more horrific than I could've imagined!

Oh thank God, I didn't watch the Teen choice awards. Too bad I didn't get to see and hear the new breakout female artist lyp synching live though. (Way to go) I had the idea that Kat wasn't going to win.. but I thought that at least Carrie would take the crown. What a strange World.

I actually watched High School Musical and ha! I wanted to laugh the entire time. But I really do like some of the songs in the movie.
