Past 'Idol' Finalists Advise Hopefuls
Aug 8, 8:32 AM EST

The sharpest advice columnists might be stumped, even sage Dr. Phil. But past "American Idol" finalists know what to tell those yearning to follow them to stardom.

"Be yourself and pick songs that make you stand out," advises Carrie Underwood.

"Be yourself and sing like it's your last time singing," counsels Fantasia Barrino.

"Be you," suggests Paris Bennett. "And no theater songs. Boring."

Be realistic about your talent, says Katherine McPhee: "Don't sing Etta James' 'At Last.'"

And for those taking part in the nationwide season six contestant search, which was to begin Tuesday in Southern California, here's a practical tip from Bucky Covington: "Plan to go to two cities. A lot of good people get cut in the first round."

OK, so a key step is, obviously, no faking it. Know thyself, as Plato told us, and then be thyself, as Underwood et al. instruct.

In song terms, think "I've Got to Be Me" — but don't actually sing the Broadway tune made famous by Sammy Davis Jr. Theater songs are boring, remember?

That's all well and good, but there must be more to making it with "American Idol."

There is, said Constantine Maroulis, the fifth-season heartthrob who took a break from his current East Coast tour (and preparing for his upcoming album) to amplify.

"First and foremost, act like a professional" in the audition, Maroulis said. "Not that you know it all but you're someone who can be trusted, as in any other job interview — because, basically, that's what it comes down to and that's what it is."

Pick a song with a great lyric "you can connect to emotionally, that you can tell a great story with," with a strong bridge and chorus, he said.

If you get on the show, focus on your own talent and don't worry about competing with the others. In fact, it's "definitely healthy" to make friends with your competition, and not just to find new pals, said the New Yorker.

"You never know who these people are going to become one day. Just because they didn't make it on 'American Idol' doesn't mean you're any better than them.

They might be a huge casting director down the line, a huge songwriter down the line."

And have fun, but not too much.

"It's so easy to fall into the party boy, party girl mode ... but you have to be responsible and you have to be a role model," he said, noting that as he spoke, a small crowd of youngsters was hovering nearby for pre-concert photos and autographs in Dewey Beach, Del.

Finally, he said, remember that your newfound fame likely comes with a sell-by date.

"There's going to be a huge buzz when you're on 'American Idol' and shortly when you get off it, and then there will be a quiet time. And for 99.9 percent of the people, it will remain quiet. They're not going on to great things. That's just a fact, Jack."

Some people come into our lives and quickly go.Others stay for a while and leave footprints on our hearts and we are never the same. That my friends is Katharine McPhee

Thanks for posting, I love reading stuff like this.  Also, I'd like to add for those of you who may be auditioning and reading this, don't sing Patsy Cline's "Crazy," the first round judges will probably hear that 50,000 times, which will probably end up driving them Crazy!

Don't sing Whitney or Mariah!!! Or "The Star Spangled Banner."

And you should also have a good story so you'll get air time!! Of course, the best advice is sing well! And if you can do that, then it doesn't really matter if you have a gimick or not.

yeah, i was a little disappointed to read this quote from katharine, i had so wanted her to sing this song all during the season "At Last" Etta James version. well, i'm not going to give up hope, maybe she'll put it in a love songs cd or something, please, kat......

See I was on the verge of breaking down
Sometimes the silence can seem so loud
There are miracles in life I must achieve
But first it's got to start inside of me.

I thought it was funny that in the first handful of quotes everyone was saying "Be yourself," but then Kat says "Be realistic." I just found it amusing. I would love to hear Kat sing At Last, however....

"I think it was the summertime when I laid eyes on you. I didn't even know your name...The boy you never wanted just steals your heart..."--Kat McPhee, Love Story

"4 walls and no you. The silence in this room is so loud...wow"--Kat McPhee, I Lost You

"I didn't see the crash that burnt the bridge, didn't see the missile that sank my loveship down..."--Kat McPhee, Dangerous

"Wanting you to be wanting me, no that ain't no way to be...You never were a friend of mine..."--Kat McPhee, Over It

"No more lonely nights to hurt me, no more tears left to spare, no more reasons to be unhappy. You threw them all up in the air..."--Kat McPhee, Each Other

"Your pedicure, white-tipped French. Your legs don't make no sense...Shoes like these make me hate flats..."--Kat McPhee, Open Toes

I thought it was funny to hear "be realistic about your talent" from someone who made possibly the biggest splash of the season with a Whitney Houston song. Don't get me wrong, I thought she pulled it off brilliantly, but does that tell you something about her confidence level? Whatever areas she may have insecurities about, I'd guess her voice isn't one of them. I thought she did fine with the songs she chose for herself because she does know her voice and her talent, and for the most part had the most trouble with songs others picked for her. With one notable exception, of course, which I shouldn't have to name.

Thanks for the post.  There will never be another Idol like Season 5.  I would also like to hear Kat sing "At Last" by Etta James.

Past 'Idol' Finalists Advise Hopefuls

"Be realistic about your talent", says Katherine McPhee: "Don't sing Etta James' 'At Last.'"

And don't take 'God Bless the Child' either. That belongs to Kat as a magical moment in time--even though I suspect some in the auditions will likely try to sing one of the songs she covered on 'AI.' And 98% of the people who audition aren't realistic about their talent. Delusions of grandeur in that business are unfortunately everywhere--no matter how much lecturing they get.

Kat's rendition of 'GBTC' may be one of the greatest and smartest songs to sing in an audition for someone of Kat's singing talent. It told a story and had a strong resonance with what Kat had gone through. She connected emotionally with that song above probably any other she did on 'AI', so Kat and Constantine's advice are the most valuable to follow. No coincidence that they're both trained at Boston Conservatory when most idols don't have deep musical training.

There's so many songs that can be found that you can connect to emotionally that are in the middle registers. Those amateur singers need to really educate themselves on what they can and can't do rather than paying more attention to vocal histrionics. Kat's 'GBTC' kept her in the middle ranges without having to hit really high notes. And look how she impressed the judges. It was all about her styling and emoting. Though I love Kat's higher ranges too--I actually appreciate it when she sings a song straight with no embellishments or jumps to high octaves.

Money on the table we'll probably see several auditioners who WILL sing 'At Last'...and make Simon put a gun to his head. Some auditioners continue to be a desperate attempt at being another William Hung. I think that phase is long over now (for the sake of glass the world over)...and true talent is king.

yeap, dont noone try copying or outsinging Kat's version of GBTC coz you will surely fail, and humiliate yourself (jokingly)! only Kat can do that at the auditions!
