Us magazine is doing a story about Kat McPhee and a reporter just called me for a quote. The guy, Ian Drew, admitted not being a big Idol fan and based on his line of questioning, it’s probably going to be some panicky story. A colleague of mine predicted the overly dramatic headline to be something like “Is Kat’s Life Spiraling Out of Control?” He asked me if this might hurt her career or her album sales. I hedged, knowing that hedging is not a good thing to feed a reporter, saying there’s no way to know for sure. Then I said it certainly doesn’t help, that missing 18 concerts (even if it was out of her control) meant tens of thousands of would-be or borderline fans she could have won over didn’t see her. I said she was received warmly, though not as warmly as Taylor or Chris. I also said it’s virtually guaranteed Taylor’s first album will outsell Kat’s, based on current singles sales. (He has sold more than three times as many CDs of his “Do I Make You Proud”/”Takin’ It to the Streets” and twice as many downloads as kat.)

It’ll be interesting how he places my quote and in what context. Should I be scared?

this moron, does not understand, kat fan are loyal till the end, when kat outsells taylor on the cd, he will go the otherway these guys should take a walk on the freeway.

Didn't they already do a story like this...2 weeks ago. Why is the focus always on Kat anyway.

Poor Kat…but then again, there’s no such thing as bad publicity! She is definitely getting more attention than Taylor.

Rodney, good luck on getting an accurate quote….I think he’ll just pick out any negative words and leave out the positive.

Hubby is watching a movie and I thought I’d check the blog. I know you are aware that the anti-Deirdre is on the other thread. Seems like this character is just sitting around waiting for me to show up then he/she jumps at the chance to spout a bunch of drivel.

Why exactly does US care so much about Kat…is she that big of a celebrity already? That’s weird…I really don’t think she will go down hill in her career, she has a loyal fanbase and just needs a hit single.

J, I think she’s just sparked a lot of interest. There are a lot of people who believed she was faking her illness so that she didn’t have to tour. These are the same people who seem to hate everything about her…I really don’t know why…maybe they think she takes attention away from their favorite Idol. Whatever, she’s a talented girl and only time will tell if her talent will be rewarded. The track record for most idols isn’t that good…but she seems to have a good deal of attention at the moment.

Well this is just making her a bigger star…whether it’s bad or not people are obviously intrigued by her. It’s certainly going to be easy for her to get booked on talkshows to promote her album this Fall since the public is so interested.

im telling you, there's really noooo such thing as "bad publicity", believe me, i work in the media. but i do tv shows and indie films, not music.. too bad though, i love music.

but of course as we've known, although bad publicity cannot really hurt Kat's career, only popularize her probably, the worst thing to happen is we,. the McPHans get hurt, and feel bad about the bad insinuations about our idol, and so is Kat, she might get affected by some bad rumors. but i have faith that she's a strong, smart, grounded woman who can handle any given situation.

Of course she isn't going to be as warmly received as Taylor or Chris in the freakin' South!  I'm impressed she's been as warmly received down there as she has.  I was worried that she'd hear quite a bit of negative stuff down there.

Wait until they get to California.  Taylor & Chris will NOT be received as warmly as Katharine out here.

Missing those 18 shows isn't going to kill her.  It was unfortunate that she missed them but it isn't going to sink her career.  The real test for all of the Idols is how well they connect with the non-Idol music fans out there.  Because as loyal and diehard as the Soul Patrollers are...Taylor needs the rest of America to make him a superstar.  He can't do it with those people alone.  And I wonder how well Taylor will connect with the people who didn't see the show.  Because Taylor's definitely an acquired taste.  I like the guy, I'm not going to buy his album or anything but I get why people like him.  Now, if I hadn't watched the show...I don't know that I would get him.

Now Katharine...if she's got good material to work with...I don't see how she can't hit big with the non-Idol audience.  There's a reason why she gets just as much media attention as Taylor even though Taylor's clearly more popular with the Idol fan base in general. 

Because Katharine connects with mainstream America.  I can list the reasons that we all know.  Obviously she's beautiful and makes a good photo for a magazine...she'll be doing more mainstream kind of music...and she's just a better interview/talker than Taylor.

So there you go.

Yes, Rodney, be scared...be very scared.

Us Magazine isn't really for all of us (or do they mean U.S. in their title?)--because they have to give a hint of rag-like behaviour in each issue in order to make a story supposedly more interesting. It makes you wonder if they'll realize after a while that a headline of 'Is Kat's Life Spiraling Out of Control?' can cause convulsions of laughter after a while? I think the only thing out of control in Kat's life was the object that was in her way that she tripped on backstage in Charlotte. Or maybe Kat's foot was a little out of control doing a dance move near that object.

If I were this reporter, I would have refused to give a quote. Why would they be taking the quote from a reporter at a newspaper anyway? It shows US Magazine can't apparently get good sources to talk to--so they go through second or third parties. At least this reporter has some kind of conscience and hopefully studied the art of semantics when giving his quote.

This Rodney Ho guy has an interesting way of writing his reports--even though I understand it's supposed to be a blog. But doing reporting with that type of blog structure (and showing his human side of worrying about what he said to the bigger press) is a bit refreshing to read.

It'll be interesting to see how US Mag quotes this guy. But US seems to be a bit behind on the reality of Kat's story anyway. They seem to cater to the people out there who don't keep up on all the news of what Kat's been doing and who she is as a person. Unfortunately, those type of people can easily be influenced by media like this too.

Not only with America but also with the rest of the world! hahahaha ... She's just amazing isn't she?

She's talented, beautiful, and sexy. She's going to the object of gossip and rumor. The bulimia, AI bashing, missing the tour, older BF, Scientology, breaking her foot, sexy hair..She already has a good start.

It's proof that she's made it if people are interested in hearing negative rumors. Most of the headlines on these gossip magazines I don't believe anyway, but the headlines are there to sell magazines because people are interested in these personalities.

Chris will be all kinds of jealous when he sees all of the glow sticks that will be for kat in the stadium! Those bloggers are smart cookies!

Well, now that Kellie is unable to perform I don't hear a lot of backlash for her. Hmmm.....
